Has paid for itself 8 times over.
Got the 51oz stainless steel Columbia about eight years ago. Came to Amazon to purchase a replacement cross shield (screen, filter disc thingy) this will be only the second time we've had to replace it. Not bad for how long we've had it and at only about $12 a pop. Decided to take a look here at the actual french press to see if anything had changed over the years, not that we need a new one. No changes, thankfully. We used to buy the glass presses and would have to replace them annually due to chipping or cracking. But I got tired of that routine and found this steel one. Was taken aback by the price, but we took the risk and we're so glad we did. It's a classic case of paying more for quality and saving much more in the long run. This thing will last forever. I read some of the critical reviews here and even though our experience is anecdotal, I can't help but point out that I have found them to either be overblown or without merit altogether. Your biggest clue is when you read all the generalized complaints without any specifics. Most seem based on the plastic and rubber components, but you need at least rubber to make it work. Have never had a problem with the 2 plastic parts (in the lid and the filter disc). The rubber eventually loses its ability to keep the grounds down, naturally. But having to replace the one inexpensive part every so often is not a big deal. If you love coffee prepared the way God intended it to be, you will love this French press.

51 ounce large stainless French Press
After breaking the glass carafe of my large Bodum French Press for the second time I decided to look for a non breakable version. Unfortunately there are few of these available. I was so happy to find this! It’s a great coffee maker just like the glass versions. The only downside is not being able to see how much coffee there is but the fact that it’s unbreakable is an overarching positive attribute . This will save me from having to replace glass carafes so it’s very much worth it!

Purchased in 2006, used it almost every day, and its still fantastic
Finally getting around to replacing the bottom screen assembly for the first time after using the press almost every day since its purchase in 2006! The bottom screen assembly still works fine. It's only a little stained and I figure it would be nice to replace it with a nice new clean one. The Coffee maker itself still looks practically new. It's a battleship of a press. Being stainless steel it just doesn't go bad and is easy to clean. One of the best purchases ever in terms of usefulness everyday and robustness of beauty and function.

makes great tasting coffee, but it's not a steel thermos with a French press inside of it
I've long preferred the taste of French press coffee to that produced by drip machines. Although I've had a Bodum Chambord press at home for over a decade, two problems limited my use of the press: 1) If more than one mug of coffee is made, the coffee cools down very quickly through the glass walls of the Chambord; 2) I have broken three Chambord FRAMES (plastic) yet the glass beaker survived...pointing to a weakness in the plastic frame. Maybe expansion of the glass when filled with hot water--or in the dishwasher-- stretched the plastic. I bought the Chambord from Starbucks back when they made colored plastic frames. Bodum replaced the frame once. I now have a complete but unsafe Chambord (with cracked frame AGAIN) and a spare beaker from an earlier plastic Chambord, which was a gift (that makes three cracked plastic frames in all, and no broken beakers). Two years ago, I gave a steel Friesling press to friends who own a boat and whose owner is a daily coffee drinker. They were pleased with it. At the time, the thermal properties were less important than having it be unbreakable for marine use. My year old Bosch drip machine is flimsy, makes so-so coffee, and takes up a lot of space on the counter. Setting it up and cleaning it after use takes as much time as using a French press. Browsing through Amazon for a sturdier Chambord with a metal frame, I ran across the Columbia by Bodum. I don't know when it was introduced, but I don't remember it being an option when I bought the Friesling two years ago. I was attracted to the unbreakable steel design, the modest price ($40, not much more than a Chambord of similar size), and the potential to keep coffee warm, though earlier reviewers warned that it doesn't function like a true thermos. That said, it makes delicious coffee. I preheat the container with hot water, which helps retain heat. The Columbia will keep unused coffee drinkably hot for an hour, and warm for about two hours. The top is not insulated, it is only single wall plastic, so one should not think of this as an insulated double wall steel thermos with a French press inside. The plastic chrome top is subject to fingerprint smudging, far more so than the steel container itself. Because the top is of lower quality than the body of the press, I gave it only four stars. All parts are dishwasher safe. Like all French press devices, the coffee uses should be of a coarse grind. Using fine drip ground coffee will result in clogging of the filter, or the filter will not sequester all of the grounds below the coffee when you press the ground to the bottom. Buy a grinder, or use a grinder at the store to grind your whole beans, using the coarse setting. Many of the burr grinders for home use have a dial to adjust the coarseness. If you use a blade grinder, achieving a uniform coarse grind is more difficult and is somewhat of an art; these grinders are better for producing a fine drip grind. I use a an electric Bodum Ibis kettle which boils water in a few minutes. Preparation is the same as for any French press device: pour hot water over coarsely ground coffee, stir with non-metallic utensil, cover, wait five minutes, press grounds to bottom and pour out the coffee. If you want a French press device that can keep your coffee hot for hours, buy this product and pour the coffee into a double wall thermos as soon as the coffee is ready. Or, if you only need the coffee hot for an hour or two, use this device without a thermos. Pro's: beautiful, unbreakable design; makes delicious coffee; when filled to capacity, can make four big mugs or 5-6 small cups of coffee for a small crowd; all parts dishwasher safe; uses far less counter space than a drip machine. Con's: need to use thermos if you want coffee hot beyond 1-2 hours (but much better heat retention than a glass Bodum press); cheap-looking plastic cover whose chrome lid doesn't match the brushed steel and which is subject to fingerprints; you still need a big drip coffee maker or urn if you are serving a big crowd. With respect to the last "con", there are now two drip coffee makers sitting on racks in the garage, used only when there is a crowd. The rest of the time, a stylish steel press sits on the counter in the kitchen, occupying far less space than it's predecessor drip machine ever did. Since there are no plugs, the press can be moved around the kitchen if more counter room is needed for say a baking project. Much easier than unplugging a drip machine and moving it elsewhere without breaking the carafe. Bodum also makes a matching sugar-creamer set for those interested in a complete look.

A delicious cup of coffee from an elegant press.
Let me preface this by saying that I've been a Keurig fan for years. But when someone serves me a french-pressed coffee, I invariably comment on how delicious it is. It always seemed like a lot of work, and more critically - a lot of time - especially in the morning as I'm rushing out to work. Boil the water, let it sit, wash the pot and filter... Well, I'm retiring in three weeks and this was my retirement gift to me, from me. I've been using it for the past four days, and I've finally figured out how to press the perfect cup. I won't post it here, because it will be different for everyone. Now for the review: It's elegant looking, and sturdy in the hand. I will add my comments to the others, in that it brews three MUGS of coffee, not eight. Just do the math - a cup, by every definition out there, is eight ounces. I suggest you did as I did, and take a measuring cup to figure out how big your mugs are. Mine hold 11 ounces, I drink two cups (mugs) in the morning, and my husband one - so this was the perfect size for us. If you're wondering how tall it is - it's 8 inches high. The finish is lovely, and I'm not sure why, but clean-up seems much easier than when I've watched others clean their french-press machines. The outside shines up great. You will also likely need a coffee grinder - or have them custom ground in the store. It only uses coarse ground coffee, and at least where I live, I couldn't find coarse ground in the store, only fine ground for the drip machines. It keeps the coffee at a good temp for at least an hour - but it rarely lasts that long. If keeping it warm for longer than that was important, I'd get either the thermos one, or pour it in to a thermos carafe. All in all - I'm super happy with my purchase. It seemed like a lot of money, but not having to buy Keurig cups will have it paying for itself pretty quickly I think.

Best in its class
I bought this as a replacement for an inferior brand of insulated cafetiere. The other one (Judge) had a spring above the edge of the wire filter mesh that gave out on first use on plunging. This lovely jug has a silicone rubber ring instead of the spring -flush with the mesh- so that there is a good seal all around the mesh. It works very well -take care not to use too much force. The seal is so good that you could cause pressure damage if too enthusiastic on plunging. The insulation works fairly well, and it keeps my Saturday morning coffee lake hot for an hour of reading the papers -unlike the glass version I also own and use when it will all get poured quickly. I love coffee, and can easily drink a litre all on my own in a morning. This is perfect for keeping it drinkable. Another review mentions an air leak after putting it in the dishwasher. I'd advise against putting it in in the first place. I have to say the info leaflet in the box was about glass cafetieres and not this one, so there was no info about dishwashing durability. Wash it by hand -and take care to wash it on its own as the highly polished surface (very beautiful to look at) scratches easily. Aesthetically this is a graceful and pleasing object -I like it for that as much as its functionality in making coffee well. I have a feeling that if I look after this, it will look after me. Highly recommended. AA UPDATE APRIL 2011 Tragedy... I carelessly dropped my lovely cafetiere. It actually bounced off the hard kitchen floor and now has a dent just off centre on the front. :- However it still works fine and there are no cracks on seams or air leaks -so this does seem very well made. Glass would certainly not have survived. Well I now have a limited edition of one -my very own customised "distressed" Bodum cafetiere. Not as distressed as I was, but my penultimate comment in the original review was borne out -it is looking after me (even if I let it down). Advice -don't bounce your Bodum. AA UPDATE OCTOBER 2011 Bodum still going strong and performing as new. It seems durable and reliable. No more dents -I have been very careful! AA UPDATE DECEMBER 2011 Bodum continuing stubbornly to defy all predictions of failure and air leaking from users of little faith. No more dents as yet and still looking good, and making superb coffee. Insulating properties not noticeably different from the start. Still very pleased with this cafetiere. Happy Christmas! AA UPDATE JULY 2012 Still going strong and goes on working without air leaks or any problems at all. Continues to be highly recommended AA UPDATE DECEMBER 2012 So here it is, Merry Christmas, everybody's having fun. And I'm still having coffee from my Bodum as good as the very first cup it made. Happy Christmas everybody! AA UPDATE MARCH 2015 Over four years on and working as well and looking as good as it did when I first got it. Very happy with this purchase. AA

Beautiful, but…
You should know the entire lid and plunger is plastic. I expected metal for the price. I still like it , it’s just slightly disappointing.

Great, stylish coffee pot
This was a present for my son who is very fussy about the look of his kitchen equipment. It's very easy to clean and makes excellent coffee. Whether it really keeps the contents warmer than other pots I don't know, the metal must absorb a lot of heat from the coffee. However if you heat the pot with boiling water before use it would definitely help. Anyway he seems very happy with his present.
