Charcoal flaking

Sturdy filter but fair amount of charcoal flaking. I have never used these before, so I don’t know if this is normal or not. Also, the air flow direction arrow puts the charcoal on the duct side of the filter which would seem to cause more flaking.

GREAT for pet owners

These did a fantastic job of cutting down the dog smell. We own 5, and even washed regularly, there’s a funk. Love them all, but damn…These filters cut the funk to an absolute minimum. If you’re on the fence, just hit buy. You won’t regret it.

Air Flow "arrow" pointing in wrong direction. Wire mess should be placed inside with air flowing toward wire mess side.

Very effective at removing odors

We have been using these odor reduction filters in our house for about 6 months now (replacing when necessary) and they do a fabulous job at removing odors. When we first installed them and ran the A/C for awhile we noticed the air smelled very “fresh”, something we had never smelled before. Hard to describe but it didn’t smell “scented”, as if the filters were adding something to the air- they’re not. To remove cooking odors we turn the A/C “fan only” on before cooking something that we know will smell. (Bacon, popcorn, etc.) We leave the fan running during cooking and usually 30 minutes to an hour after we’re done eating, the odors are gone! I also use them as a pre-filter in the air scrubber/ filter in my woodworking shop and it makes a very noticeable difference by removing all the odors generated there. As some others have noted, some of the carbon particles had fallen off inside the package (maybe a handful) but no more came off in use, so not a big deal.

Best Filter made

Bottom Line is this is the best filter you can buy. Most expensive to but worth it. Even in a fairly dirty house they last 3-4 months and reduce the dust in the air dramatically . If I had problems with pet hair and my filter was mounted close to the floor/bottom of the wall I wouldnt bother with this filter. Might as well get 2 dollar filters and put them in 2 at a time. These will clog up to quickly to be worth the trouble.........

Fire Hazard!

Other reviewers have pointed this out and this product is still being sold on Amazon. The charcoal flakes have been spray-glued onto the back of the filter facing the direction of the air flow into the furnace. What that means is that some of those flakes are going to go right into your hot furnace when you turn on your AC in the winter to warm your home. Charcoal flakes flying into a hot furnace within a home = fire hazard. I called my local Fire Marshal and showed him pictures of the product. He was shocked. This product is defective and should be removed from Amazon immediately. 3M should do a public recall of this product right away. Charcoal flakes being sucked into a hot furnace in middle of one's home is not a safe proposition. It doesn't matter if this thing reduces smell a little bit. I will be calling 3M's headquarters about this as well and will file a US Federal Trade Commission complaint for an FTC investigation into this product.
