Sometimes it gets bound up under the spring tension, then you need to tighten the tension to relese,
At first it was hard to get it to unwind till I saw how it worked and then I could use it. I was use to one that you could feed out. This one you need to pull out the length you need and then feed it where it needs to go. then wind it in after use. It is well made.

Works well for my needs
Product performed pretty well, the only issue is the tape is very stiff to pull out of the case. This makes it difficult to feed out as your fishing through your objective. Best bet is to pull a long stretch of tape then feed through. Retracts very well and is the right size for short (less than 20') tasks.

let's just start with I'd rather do anything than fish wire.
from that baseline this was indispensable. problems: 1. hook tab on the front is much fatter than the tape. 2. hook tab on front catches when retrieving tape and eventually pulled off - turned out to be an improvement. 3. and the snap back. Just be aware the handle for winding it snaps back something fierce. But again, did the job and I'm sure it would again if I ever get dumb enough to fish wire through 2-stories again.

Have to rig it to be used correctly
Here's how fish tape is supposed to be used: Push guide string (or braided wire) through one small hole so it's piled up inside the wall. Insert the fish tape into the other small hole, and try to get to the pile of guide string and hook it (you, know: "FISH" for it). Once you drag the guide string (or wire) through, you then pull your actual wiring (network, coax, phone or speaker wires, for instance) through both small holes using the guide string. If you intend to use this product in that manner, you'll have to modify this thing by rigging your own hook on the end. I just got this in the mail so I have no idea how much of a pain that will be. Hopefully not too bad. Other than that, it looks compact and convenient, and probably worth the price. NOTE: You have to PULL the tape out (not crank it) to deploy. The crank ONLY functions for reeling it back in. I don't mind this at all, but I don't want anyone to be fooled into assuming the crank is two-way.

Worked great for in wall and under carpet work
I used this to pull some cat6 cable through my walls into my attic and it worked great. I used duct tape to attach the end of the cable to the fishing tape. The only real problem I had was that it was hard to tell when you extended the tape far enough to reach the bottom of the wall. I think I'll use a permanent marker to put marks ever 5' on the fishing tape to make this easier. I also used it to pull some wire under a carpet (speaker wire and a flat cat6 cable). It worked well for that purpose too. The only complaint there is the head on the fishing tape is pretty small so it was hard to follow its progress under the carpet.

The unwinding sucks, but the tool is still useful for occasional needs.
This tape is very annoying to unwind! You're supposed to be able to simply pull the tape out, but I constantly had to battle and turn the crank slightly clockwise to unlatch some sort of lock that prevented smooth unwinding of the steel tape. Fortunately I don't have to use the tool everyday and rewinding worked perfectly fine using the crank. The fish tape allowed me to run cables through attic spaces that otherwise would've been impossible for me to run my security camera cables, so at the end I'm content with the inexpensive purchase. The end tip isn't particularly useful for attaching cables, so make sure you use sturdy tape (electrical or duct) to secure your cable to prevent slip off while fishing.

tape is stuck - FIXED
The tape won't actually pull out. The reel seems stuck. The plus side is that it's so cheap it's hardly worth returning. I haven't opened it yet to try to fix it. Other than that, you could hardly tell it's used and it's nice and thin. Thanks to the reviewer who commented. I forgot to come back and update review. It has worked great ever since I opened the case and carefully unwound the tape and closed the case up again. So I'd say if you knew you might have to do that first, it's well worth the money. The tape is nice and strong and has allowed me to fish places that other, thinner fish tape got stuck.

Good for the price
If you are a beginner in your field or have not used such tool before, I would not recommend this one for you but for me this just perfect as it is practical for its size and sturdy enough for my kinna work. Personally I prefer them a bit more flexible and less stiff but this one is good.

IT WILL CUT your hands ... Mixed feelings...
"It is a Greenlee?" ... Greenlee hasn't been the same ever since it was sold off a few times around the block.... This product looks like some poor engineer was given a day to develop but no testing was done. The mechanism is very easily jammed. (be careful!) The first time I tried using it, I gave it a pull and the wire did not come out easily from the case. I had to crank the handle only to have my fingers practically crushed at full force by a spring loaded handle. The metal wire is VERY sharp it will cut your fingers... So, please wear a pair of leather or latex foam gloves that has palm and finger protection. At ~$22 it is the cheapest option here on Amazon for a 7.5m wire fish tape but I think it could have been made a little better (ie: the spring loaded handle is just stupid) All Greenlee products used to have a lifetime warranty, However, this product seems to have non whatsoever... So, my review is really a 2.5 star, it is not Super bad but it isn't the "Greenlee" quality , I have come to expect ...

Well made. Sturdy. Should last a *very* long time!
Other than the quality and how compact the case is, the only problem I had was pulling the "steel snake" out of the case the first time, because it's wound tight. Use a combination of pliers to pull and a creating a bit of "push" with the winder mechanism to get the steel "snake" out the first time. Happy with the product because it's sturdy. I suspect this will last decades with some reasonable care.

very hard to use and now it becomes a piece of waste
It is very hard to use. The crank does NOT work as you might think that it could control the retraction or extrusion of the steel tape, NOPE. You will have to pull the tape out by your hand and sometime the tape will get stuck and you might have concern when/if the tape suddenly retracts then its sharp edge(s) are/is cutting your fingers off/open. My suggestion is to return it as soon as you find it not exactly what you want. I just got too busy to return it and now it becomes a piece of waste.

Great product if used properly...
great quaity for the price, safety glasses is a must since it does spring back when winding, when you first get it it be hard to unwind it,do not use the crank to do so since its designed to wind it not to unspool it.Use a pair of pliers and pull the plastic tab carefully and it would unwind, don't pull too hard since the tab is a bit fragile. So when unwinding just pull it out by hand and do not use the crank since others had the tape get stuck.

I bought the Greenlee one over the others as I expected good quality like many of my other Greenlee tools
Quite difficult to get the fish tape out, it seems to get caught. I bought the Greenlee one over the others as I expected good quality like many of my other Greenlee tools... this one's just not great unfortunately! It is much more compact than the Klein one though, so that's nice in a toolbox.
