doesn't really give you clues
It was a fun puzzle to do but I thought the solution was rather weak. I could come up with several different scenarios and the overall finished puzzle didn't really give you a clue as to who the killer was and to where the body was hidden was stretching it.

These are my FAVORITE puzzles!
I’ve done two and cannot wait to do more! Let me set the scene: you open the box and find a story. You read the multiple page, well written and intriguing story of a murder! Then you solve a puzzle with no picture to get clues and solve the murder! It’s the most fun to do with friends because you talk about the story and feel like you’re living it with them! Such a fun puzzle!

Would Have Been a 5 Star, BUT... SPOILER ALERT!
Very challenging puzzle, BUT! The "solution" to the mystery makes no sense. (Here's the SPOILER.) The only way the "1961" would need to be upside down to hide the fact that the "top" of the barrel was cut off, is if the cut were made along the long axis of the barrel. This is IMPOSSIBLE to do without completely disassembling the barrel, or cutting through the barrel staves. Nobody would open a barrel like that. You'd open it by removing an end, and rotating the barrel along the long axis would serve no purpose in hiding that it was opened in that way. I find it unbelievable that nobody at University Games would detect this bonehead move.

Just What I Needed
I saw something similar for a MUCH higher price on a novelty website so I came to ol' Amazon to see if I could find it here. This is not the exact one from the other website, nor is it the same brand. But it's wonderful all on it's own! A unique idea. I had a kid's version of this type of thing when I was younger, and it turns out the concept definitely holds up. I'm always looking for fun things to do as a family and sometimes board games and crafts get old, especially during a pandemic when we're stuck inside. And SOMEONE in my family HATES jigsaw puzzles. But he loves mysteries. So I presented to them: THIS ITEM. It was a hit! I love it. They love it. It's great.

Mystery Puzzle is a Mystery to Assemble
I have been working on this puzzle for 1 month. The pieces and construction of the puzzle are very good. Large assortment of different shapes and sizes. I am about 70% done with the puzzle and I am seriously thinking about breaking it down, putting back in the box and donating it to the Salvation Army. Not that I have anything against the Salvation Army but I have completely lost interest in the puzzle. The puzzle DOES NOT have a picture of the completed puzzle!! Where I usually feel relaxed doing puzzles... this one is now getting to be very frustrating. I have purchased dozens of puzzles over the last two years, but I will think hard before I purchase another one without a picture.

Fun and challenging
I just now finished assembling the puzzle. It was difficult to put together without any idea of what the final picture was going to look like ... but I knew that when I bought it. The story booklet was well written and fun to read. Once the puzzle is complete, you can make assumptions on the answer to the 'who done it', however there isn't anything (at least that I could find) to confirm your assumption. I would post a picture here of the finished puzzle, but that would ruin the experience for the next person assembling it.

To paraphrase Edward Bulwer Lytton: It Was A Dark and Blurry Night
Short answer: I like the idea of a mystery solved by doing a jigsaw puzzle, I like the Foul Play and Cabernet story, but think I would have enjoyed doing this puzzle more if it had less pieces or more colorful images. Long answer: My hard-working, wine-loving husband and I enjoy reading and watching mysteries so I thought he'd enjoy the gift of this Foul Play and Cabernet mystery set in wine country (which we've visited) together with jigsaw puzzle clues - sounded like a pleasant but also stimulating pastime for the both of us. He too loved the idea and studied the facts of the case closely but had far less time than I to put this 1,000 piece puzzle together, although he tackled two very difficult sections. I assembled all the clearer, sharper discernible patterns, but, never having attempted a jigsaw puzzle of this size, especially without being able to see the complete image first, after a few days of intense effort, correctly interlocking blurry and/or dark pieces was becoming more chore than challenge. The color palette, beautiful in a Restoration Hardware way (mostly deep earth tones), strained our eyes under electric light. Still, after assembling about 3/4 of the pieces, we almost figured out the how of this mystery. The mystery's ending, which I read in a mirror, was quite clever and fit with our thinking and the intriguing visual discoveries we made as we assembled the jigsaw pieces, but, having studied hundreds of true and fictional crime cases, I don't think the method would have worked if attempted in real life. As I put the pieces together, I thought of many telltale clues that would have been left for investigators of a crime like this, none of which were mentioned in the story or illustrated in the puzzle. Before assembling a puzzle of this size, it's important to have a big workspace devoted to it for the long haul, plus ample, non-reflecting lighting. Our dining table, which seats six, was covered up with Foul Play and Cabernet for days and our overhead lights caused a bit too much glare. Still, Foul Play and Cabernet gives me a greater appreciation for the complex work of real-life homicide investigators. I hope to attempt a few more mysteries-plus-jigsaw-puzzles and may give them as gifts.

plot has flaws
I've done the mystery puzzle as well as the Recipe one from this company. I love the recipe one so bought this one and the grounds one puzzle too. The puzzle is well made, and challenging, but the solution to the isn't plausible at all. The people who wrote it thought you could just cut open a wine barrel, and then hammer the lid on and have it be water tight. That cannot work, to remove the lid and be able to replace it you have to remove the hoops holding the barrel staves in place around the lid there is no way they could hide evidence the way they said.

Not easy
Not for the impatient! Very difficult and there’s no picture to go on. Still working. On it. Haha

Excellent jigsaw if you like a difficult challenge.
This is a very good puzzle even by the standards of the University Games Classic Mystery Series. As usual with this series, the jigsaw image is not that shown on the box. These jigsaws are well designed from a difficulty point of view but this one is particularly tricky. There are large areas of very similar colours and the way the pieces are cut (leaving only a tiny speck of the idenifiable adjacent colour) means sometimes you can look at a piece for ages without intellectually 'clicking' where it should go. I've rated it 5/5 for the jigsaw difficulty factor rather than anything else as I enjoy a difficult challenge. The final image itself is interesting but I wouldn't rate it as attractive in an scenic vista of beautiful countryside sense. It comes with a little short story booklet outlining a murder (a vineyard owner down on his luck takes a business partner with a foxy wife - one of them ends up dead. Whodunnit?). The story wasn't as good as others in the series and the solution was a bit strained (hard to guess) - so if you're buying the jigsaw for the Whodunnit mystery aspect others in the series are better (eg. Titanic). So 5/5 for jigsaw challenge/difficulty and 3/5 for the muder mystery booklet + solution. Don't let that put you off though if you like a trickey jigsaw this will keep you occupied for hours.

Fun but....
**Spoiler photos in review** Really fun concept and we did the Sherlock Holmes one last year and enjoyed it. But this one had 11 missing pieces and 4 duplicates. Which when you're doing a puzzle without a reference photo makes it REALLY challenging and frustrating.

Hard work!
Loved this puzzle but you really have to work at it in day light. The colours are very similar so it's hard to know were things go. In the end it came down to sorting pieces by shape and colours. Very satisfying when I got it finished. Would love to show a picture................but that defeats the purpose.

Patience
This puzzle is like none other I have ever done. The puzzle pieces are different sizes, colours with weird shapes. Frustrating at times, very challenging and requires lots of patience.
