Perfect for day hikes
I hike most days, and have used the Mountainsmith day pack for 2-3 years (love it), but it is a tad cumbersome for shorter hikes, and is also hot in the summer (huge for me), in spite of attempts to ventilate back panel. I have significant back problems so wanted to stick w/ lumbar packs. I wanted something smaller (back ventilation!) with room for water (dog and me), dog treats, snacks, phone, map, tissues etc, so bought this one. I have to use the "strapettes" because with any water weight, the pack tips back. The pack/strapette combo, while expensive, is perfect and much cooler than the day pack. The weight is gently snugged into my back and I don't even notice it. Zero back pain. The pack is sturdy, with great zippers and planning. The front panel does not interfere with opening the front pocket and is great for storing maps, bandaids, etc. I don't need more inner pockets as I use a phone holster with an additional zipper pouch for pills and the like. Several minor issues. 1. I would like the side bottle pockets to be 1" higher. My 24oz bottles work but can tip out if I take the pack off. I use 16oz nalgenes on the sides and put a 24-32oz bottle in the big main compartment to fill up with midway. 2. There aren't many places to hang stuff off of. The strapette chest piece allows me to hang the dog bowl and whistle; however, a near encounter with a big mountain lion yesterday (crossed path 30 yards in front of us) leaves me with a powerful need to hang a bell from somewhere. Basically, I hike by myself and hate to dig into the pack so I tend to look like the storybook traveling tinker with stuff hanging off everywhere. Mountainsmith apparently likes folks to hike with a cleaner look. 3. the addition of a left sided waist pocket is nice, but I would like to be able to close it enough so my tissue pack doesn't work its way out. I am not handy with needle and thread but thinking about a snap closure or velcro strap (velcro not first choice as I wear silk all winter).

Perfect for my photographic needs
After using slings and messenger bags for a light camera setup of a body+lens and one additional lens, I was in search of something a bit more stable. Slings and messenger bags kind of swing around a lot, but a lumbar pack seemed perfect as it stays pretty stationary on your waist. Enter this pack, enough room for my OM-1 + m.Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 pro and one additional lens (m.Zuiko 75-300mm mkii). Not only can it carry that but I have room for a mini tablet or wallet, keys and mobile phone (something so many photography-centric bags seem to forget). Because it’s situated on my waist it makes going from camera to both hands free easy. Using a sling once you put your camera away, the sling swings all over the place; a neck strap is the same issue; capture clips and quick releases are not comfortable on the hip as they can dig. Also if I really wanted I can just carry this cross body as well (works alright, not tight to the body like some slings can be but it’ll do in an urban setting; or you can use the included shoulder strap for a more traditional carry). The grab handles are a huge plus as well as it makes it super easy to pick up the pack. The only thing I can nitpick is I wish the main opening was wider. All in all solid bag for a photographer.

a good bag ruined by bad design choices
I really, really wanted to like the bag- nice capacity, seemingly useful features. When I tried it out on a light hike, the crappy design choices began to reveal themselves. 1) The side bottle pockets have stretch mesh panels. When I put 24oz. Thermoflask water bottles, it fit nicely, but even with the bungee cords pulled tight and straps pulled tight, they flopped around and almost came out when I was walking (not running or jumping- just walking). Also, because the bottles flopped around, they pulled the pack so it tilted it away from my back, making wearing it uncomfortable. 2) Too many straps. I understand providing options for adjustability, but there are so many straps they get in the way of each other and zipper pulls for the various compartments. 3) The cell phone pocket is also made of stretch mesh and is not tall enough to hold a normal sized smart phone securely. My phone also moved around due to the stretchy nature of the mesh, and would catch on things, making it fall out of the pocket. 4) the buckles for the shoulder straps pressed into my back, making it uncomfortable to wear the pack for any length of time. After giving it a fair chance, I decided to go with the Osprey Talon 6. It's better in every way.

Heavy, but great!
This is a great pack, but I found it to be very over-built and heavy. I ended up cutting out the neoprene tablet sleeve, the carrying handles, and the giant zipper pulls to try to shave some weight. After that, it was perfect for an extra layer, a few liters of water, my first aid and some snacks for a long day hike.

Very comfortable on the trail
Love this pack. Large enough to hold everything you need for the trail but not too big. It is extremely comfortable, I did not even really remember it was there until I needed something. Also water bottle holders are perfectly positioned for easy reach back. I recommended that my husband gets one too.

Shoulder strap, easy to move to access pockets.
Used for 5-8 mile day hikes. Holds 2 water bottles, has pockets for a number of smaller items, and capable of holding a sweatshirt if necessary.
