Great design, poor hose fitting

I liked the price on this Pentair leaf catcher compared to the price of replacing my previous brand. Plus it’s a lot easier to clean with the removable net screen. The suction power seems to be on par with previous brand, which was pretty good. My only complaint so far is the hose fitting. The opening is not the standard size of pool vacuum hoses. This leaf catcher came with a special adapter hose, but the fit is poor. There have been several times I found the adapter hose slipped out from the regular vacuum hose. I have tried to other brands of vacuum hoses with same results. My next attempt I will try some type of clamp. But for the ease of use and price compared to other similar leaf catchers, I would recommend this.

Note: This is the one to buy if you are looking for an easy open and close unit.

I previously owned a similar leaf trap for my pool. My previous one lasted over 7 years and finally cracked the hinged cover and lever to open the cover. One of the most important features I was looking for was an easy open top, something that frustrated me with the old one. The unit comes with a small hose to connect to the skimmer, but unfortunately this was not large enough for me to use. The body is very rugged and appears to sustain itself against heated summers and cold snap winters. I was very impressed with the easy to open latch. Don't throw away the instructions since it includes a parts list for replacement parts such as ordering a new bag or even a new latch in the unlikely event that it would break. But don't think that this implies there will be a lot of parts to replace. Always a good idea with any product to replace the o-ring every few years since they may cause a problem I will next discuss. Well I never knew how bad my previous leaf trap was until I put in the Pentair. I was having a problem with my Creepy Crawler often not working and as soon as I turned on the pump, the Creepy Crawler sprang into action. I was ready to consider a new Creepy Crawler but no need now. The Pentair has a great seal and is supporting the Crawler very well. Probably I had many more issues with my previous trap such as a bad o-ring or other cracks on the unit which caused the Creepy Crawler problem. I also have to say that it's much easier to order from Amazon than to visit my local pool supply store. The company which begins with an "L-E-S" never has anything in stock and there is always a long line of customers. I ordered on Saturday night and it arrived Monday around noon.

Best I Could Find, But Could be More Durable

I would think someone would come up with a better idea, but until they do this is the one. Purchased 18 months ago, the vast majority of the time a floating cover was on the pool so this item was shielded from direct sunlight. It is difficult to close the lid over the o-ring, you have to carefully keep pushing the ring under the lip of the lid as it wants to get trapped outside. If you force it, you'll probably break the hinge. Over time, the o-ring seems to grow, so the problem gets worse. Pool guy put lubricant on it recently, I think this made the problem worse not to mention messy. Replacement o-rings are available, so I would just recommend replacing it every 6 months or so. The plastic housing weathers as plastic does when sitting in 95-degree chlorinated water, and now the hinge has broken on the lid, probably from the constant stress of being closed over the o-ring. Not the latch, unfortunately, which comes with the replacement o-ring kit, but the hinge. At least the part that broke is the lid side, so I can order a replacement lid to fix the problem instead of a whole new trap. It lasted less than 2 years and was difficult to use - why 4 stars? Because I can't find anything better, and I suspect anything plastic stuck in a pool is going to degrade in a couple of years.

Great tool for cleaning dirty pools but design could be improved upon.

Works very well for catching leaves or even dirt and grit when used with the optional silt bag. It won't catch the real fine stuff but keeps a lot of it out of your filter. Easy to clean but could use a check valve on the inlet end because if you are not careful how you disconnect the hoses and pick it up out of the pool the leaves/dirt will backflush out of the housing and back into the pool. Mine tends to leak a little air at the lid "O" ring and when I have it hooked up to the bottom cleaner over a day's time it will fill with air and need to be "burped". It might just need a little silicone grease on the O ring to make it seal better and hose weights to keep it submerged. Without weights it has a neutral buoyancy and some part of the lid joint is usually above the water line. The lid latch is made of the same plastic as the housing and is already getting hard and stiff with exposure to chlorine and sun. I expect it won't last more than a couple of seasons before it breaks. The latch should be made out of stainless steel instead.

BUY THIS DON'T BE STUBBORN LIKE ME

I tried the other, cheaper items... They made the job harder. This item was recommended to me by our pool service technician. I was knuckleheaded, and should have listened to the professional. What makes this item Superior is the flexible leaf and debris trap. Also the mesh netting is fine enough to catch needles and other small contaminants that are large enough to jam up the impeller. The unit is completely clear which allows you to see what is going through the hose and the top easily pops open and latches itself shut. That is exactly what happened with the other cheaper competing products. Save the time and the frustration and pay the extra $30 to $40. You will make that money back up in time spent cleaning the pool.
