Great upgrade to the cheap plastic units

Definitely more durable than the standard plastic units. I will say that these will most likely not be a drop in replacement for everyone. Not because there’s anything wrong with these. It’s just that most screen door manufactures are pretty lax when it comes to cutting the openings. You may have to file the openings to the correct size as well as straighten out the frame a little as it may be pinched a little. After that, these are relatively easy to install. If you have the plastic, nylon corner inserts you will probably break the pins these mount to when installing. I would not recommend these unless you have the metal corner inserts for that reason.

High quality makes for difficult installation

The other negative reviewers are right -- this installation is pretty tricky. I think its worth it, though, as the ball bearings and steel wheels are much more durable than the nylon alternatives. I bought these because a nylon axle had snapped off my existing wheel and the other wheels were in bad shape from normal use. I managed to install all four in about 30 minutes, but it took a bit of process. Please be careful following these directions, its easy to warp and damage the screen door frame. The most important part is to pre-bend the fulcrum clip. See the image below with a large screw driver wedged in there. You'll want to twist the screwdriver until you've got the clip just a little narrower than the thing you're clipping it on. Do this in multiple passes with the screwdriver as you don't want the clip to be too loose when installed. As this is made from spring steel, you will need to push the clip pretty far to achieve the plastic deformation you want. The second most important part is to use a C-clamp to secure the side opposite the fulcrum. Using your thumb is a non-starter, you'll be putting a lot of force on this point. Be careful to not overtighten the C-clamp, it will crush your screen door frame. If you have a helper, have them stabilize the C clamp near where its holding the wheel frame. The last step is to use some vice grips to grasp the wheel. Be sure to grasp the wheel closer to the center, you don't want to crimp the wheel edges. Get the vice grip as close to the door frame as possible, then use the large screwdriver again to *gently* but firmly lift the clip onto its attachment point. You probably want to put some soft material like rubber or cardboard between the screwdriver and the frame to minimize damage to the frame for this. The wheels work *amazingly* well once installed. Very smooth rolling, they'll slide the screen door across the while track with a small push.

Installation is not easy, work great once installed

I bought 4 of these roller assemblies to replace the original plastic rollers with a plastic axle. The axles kept wearing out until the roller would retract into the screen frame. These were somewhat difficult to get installed as the ears that must be spread to snap over the pins in the door are very difficult to spread enough and still slide the unit into the recess in the door frame. Using an assortment of screwdrivers and a steel rod to spread and maneuver the part in place and onto the pivot pins I was able to get three of four installed but the fourth broke when I spread the ears. Even considering the one that broke I still think these are worth the expense over the plastic units. With just 3 steel ball bearing rollers and one new plastic unit the door slides very easy and does not bind at all. It is a bit noisier but slides very well.

Take your time, it will eventually get installed

Warning: there are two rollers per package! Don't overbuy like I did! As for install, it took me about 1.5 hours. Uggh. In the end, yes, generally follow the video....with modifications Set up the screen door like on the video so it's braced against something heavy and won't move. Put the unit in a vise or something and spread out those clamps a bit so they can bite easier. Shimmy them on like on the video....and some go on way easier than others. As for the sliding action on the door after it's installed - wow! It takes one finger to open/close it so smoothly. Before I switched them out, my 20 year old rollers took two hands sometimes. I'm pleased with the purchase.

Remove that “holding screw”, or else!

I have no idea what “sheerness” and “thickness” mean with respect to replacement wheels for a screen door. so I didn’t know what grade to give the wheels for these elements. My experience is that I ordered a new set of wheels based on the old model number, and I was sent the correct replacement item. The wheels are easy to install as long as you remember to REMOVE THE HOLDING SCREW, in the corner at the top of the door. Sorry to yell, but TRUST ME: If you don’t remove that holding screw, you can try for an hour to snap the new wheel in, but it won’t work! Remove the holding screw, if necessary, easily remove whatever remains of the old wheel, snap in the new wheel, and screw the holding screw back in. Then flip the door over, and do the same thing at the top of the door—including removal of the holding screw. We got the metal wheels, and they are quite sturdy. We just need to use a bit of oil on the tread. The wheels have worked fine.

Just what I needed

I had to watch you tube videos for installation but finally got the hang of it. First time diy screen door repair not as easy as they make it look but the rollers work great and well made

May test your willpower if you have an older door but worth it

The only reason these weren’t easy to install is because my door is ancient and not suited for the thinner clasps, but after trying out every single screw driver I own, using all the strength in my noodle arms, and spending at least 10 minutes face down on my floor contemplating the merits of throwing the door off my balcony, I got them on and they were PERFECT! My landlord had sent our screen door in for repair but the crappy wheels they put on broke within a few months. Both of us are glad I found and installed these despite the brief inner turmoil I experienced during install! The door now glides like a dream, no more falling off.
