Overall Very Satisfied.
I purchased this headlamp specifically to provide light in unlit areas while walking my dog at night. For various reasons I do not have an easily available hand to hold a flashlight so I decided to go full nerd and use a headlamp - I need one hand for her leash and the other for her e-collar to shut down her powerful afterburners when she sees a potential prey animal. The beam width is perfect - its wide but certainly not too wide, it is appears perfectly circular, and tends to brighter illumination in the center of the circular pattern. I would much prefer the knob for turning on and controlling brightness has, say, five detents and not be infinitely variable as it now is. I have not had sufficient experience with it to comment on battery life but approximately 75% brightness for 30 minutes or so is no apparent problem. The instructions state it will be fully charged when the light turns green but the green light only blinks when it has been on the charger for much more than sufficient time to fully charge it. It is relatively heavy but I do at all notice the weight when wearing it on a baseball hat. A huge opportunity for improvement would be to replace the 12 Volt charging port with a USB 5 Volt port as it now needs dedicated wall and car chargers.

nice
This light is well worth the money, it works great and no problem, the only issues I have its the harsh Velcro its to hard if you put it against your forehead

Great light with a couple of small issues.
I have several headlights. This one is the most rugged and the only one that offers almost infinite brightness control. The brightness level is near the top of the heap too. It's too bright for close work if on full brightness. But that's OK since the light output is adjustable and the extra light output is great for lighting a work area the size of a large room. The wide beam is also pretty uniform, with some fall-off toward the edges and without annoying hot spots or voids. The beam shape is a a circle with fairly sharp cutoffs at the edge of the disk. The wide flood beam is quite a bit wider than most of my headlights and unlike the narrow beam lights, doesn't give you that tunnel-vision effect. The downside is that it won't reach out as far as a spot beam would. But, even so, riding a bike at night is much more secure with the wide spread of the beam and the illumination distance is far enough to satisfy all but the most competitive riders. One reservation that holds me back from rating this light a 5 is that the curved surface of the light that rests against my forehead isn't particularly comfortable. The radius of the curve in the light is greater than that of my forehead. The result is that the light bears against my forehead in only the center third of the padded surface on the light. While I can wear it for an hour if I'm busy, it isn't as comfortable as it could (and should) be. Come on, SureFire, everyone's forehead isn't the same shape. You need to provide a couple of different filler strips to put behind the pad to support the light against foreheads of different shapes. The other issue I have is that this light is front heavy due to the design incorporating all the heavy parts in the front and having them extend a fair distance from your forehead. Without the top strap that is typical on lights of this type you have to cinch the headband strap up fairly tightly to keep the light from drooping. This is especially true if you're engaged in some activity that causes your head to bob or bounce vertically. Coupled with the potentially poor fit of the pad that bears against your head the extra tension on the strap compounds the comfort problem. But, to keep this in perspective, the performance attributes of the light are so good that I can only downgrade it to a 4 on account of the comfort issue. I intend to fabricate some kind of shaped cushion to improve the fit. But I shouldn't have to, and neither should you if you don't have a relatively flat/broad forehead.

Great Headlamp
I've had the Maximus for ten years now and it still works great although the battery doesn't last as long as it used to. But two indicators of quality for me - the headband, which still has good stretch and strength and the little rubber battery plug which is still supple and stays closed. But it really is just a little too heavy for even a tightened single strap which tends to let it wiggle some if you're moving around, and Surefire doesn't offer a top strap even though they made accommodations for it, so I recently bought a headband from Fenix with a top strap and easily made it work. I can wear it a little looser, have no more issues with movement and it's now comfortable enough for long term wear. The light itself is solid. It swivels up and down easily and doesn't move once set. It uses a standard 12 VDC charger with a typical small 12 v plug (not USB). Some have called it proprietary but it's not. I have several 12 VDC chargers with the same plug that work with the light. Changing the intensity is smooth and even from nothing to full power and the large, knurled knob is easy to find. It's my go to anytime I have to work in diminished light. This headlamp is still so good I don't really need it but I'm sorely tempted to get the new one with the upgraded LED and keep this one for backup. I may have a bit of a problem. :: Update: since my review, I contacted surefire and told them the battery seemed weak in my maximus. They said send it to sthem and gave me an RMA. So I did and I just got it back. It’s as bright as ever and the battery lasts a lot longer now. I’m not sure if they did anything else but the LED and lens is very clean and looks new while the brightness knob seems a little stiffer and has an indent at the end that I don’t remember. Whatever they did, it’s like a new light again. Very happy with my purchase.

It’s bright, it’s simple. But it lets the rain in, and it has logistic issues.
Pros: (1) It’s 1000 lumens (not 500 as stated in the ad) which is very bright. I personally cannot conceive of a situation where you’d need more lumens, but professionals or SAR volunteers may have different needs from me. You could pretty much cook a chicken at 50 yards just by looking at it with this torch on full. (2) It’s simple. You don’t have lots of modes and buttons; you have adjustable tilt and a knob for brightness, and if you’re in deep trouble, you can make it flash SOS so people can find you and get temporarily blinded. (3) It’s metal. I like that. (4) It’s not made in china. I know some chinese stuff is more cost effective, but I have ethical objections to buying chinese stuff and ... well, they just talk crap and exaggerate everything. I can’t avoid buying chinese entirely (I’m typing this on an ipad), but I try to minimise. Cons: (1) lt’s freakin’ expensive. Stupid money. For this money it should be waterproof. However ... (2) The rubber flap on the device will never stay shut, so it’ll let water in, it will corrode and the whole device will stop working. Have these people not heard of QA or even User Acceptance Testing? I have older SF devices which are absolutely bulletproof. This is a very poor design, and I can’t see a workaround. You have to charge it, so you can’t keep sealing it with silicon or similar. Red card #1. (3) As others have pointed out, for nearly £300 you’d expect a top strap on this. (4) It’s rechargeable ONLY. If it runs out, you have to plug it in to the mains, or carry your charger and find an inverter/generator. It’ll still last a long time, but if you’re away from civilisation for a few nights, you may well be absolutely stuffed. If there are a few of you, you can’t provide basic logistic support like one person having a backup battery/set that could power other colleagues’ torches. No, you have to carry another expensive torch, or just go home early. SF didn’t think this one through. Users may not be out over just the weekend. This means it cannot be considered a professional tool. Red card #2. (5) It’s rechargeable (yes, again), so after a number of cycles, it will have to go back to SF for a new battery. Really? Ok for our cousins, but from the UK it’s nearly 2 weeks there and 2 weeks back, plus comms and repair time. I expect the battery would last a couple of years, but it should be in operable condition indefinitely. Whisky Tango Foxtrot?! Someone should look at the idea of using screw threads and O rings to access the battery, like on pretty much all the other SF torches (as an aside, I tested an old SF torch by leaving it under 1m water for 6 months. Worked perfectly afterwards. Yet this has a single sealed battery and a charging port that cannot keep light rain out). Not up to standard, guys. I bought a second hand Minimus ‘Saint’ for £50 and sent it off to be refurbished at a cost of about $30. It may not cook chickens, but it takes the CR123A batteries I have in my pocket, so I can be away for as long as I want. No charger, no mains power required. And I’ve saved £200.

Exactly as expected
PROS: -Up to 500 lumens output with intensity dial -Lightweight & comfortable -Light can be angled for best shine -Rechargeable through electric outlet, no batteries required -Long lasting & usable in a multitude of situations CONS: -On the expensive side, but nothing else compares to this product; sure beats having to change batteries and have less lumens
