What you need if you need to clean the bottom of a flat-bottomed tub.

So before that headline sentence, I should have copped to cleaning my livestock tanks with these skimmers. I don't have a pool or hot-tub. I use these to skim leaves and debris from livestock tanks. For that, the majority of pool skimmers work adequately. Where this head shines is cleaning flat tank bottoms. This head has a cleverly designed edge that scoops the sunken 'treasure' off the bottom. Just scrape the bottom with the smoother side up, voilà! The mesh is fine enough to catch alfalfa leaves, grass blades and wheat beards and flat enough to empty with a moderate smack against the tank side.

I thought this was going to have a much deeper basket like one that I had previously purchassed that looked just the same as this one (in the picture). May have just been a lack of paying attention to detail on my part. Bottom line, this skimmer is fine, but it's just a skimmer so I imagine a less expensive would work just as well.

Screen is not evenly distributed around the frame limiting depth of net

Our leaf skimmer net broke earlier this week while I was attempting to take wet leaves off the winter cover. Normally I like to buy things like this after I've had a chance to actually handle them but being that it's November in New England trying to find pool supplies now is pretty tough. I settled on this net because it had pretty decent reviews and had an aluminum frame as opposed to plastic. I just got it yesterday and had a chance to use it. It is decently built but it has an issue as the screen mesh doesn't seem to have been installed correctly. It's a little difficult to describe but the screen is tight at the end where it fits into the pole. This means that the screen is always under tension at that location even though there is slack everywhere else. This not only limits the depth of the net and how much it can hold but makes me wonder if it'll eventually rip at that point since it seems to be carrying the majority of the weight when picking something up. I didn't have a lot of options at this time but wish I could have bought something locally so that I could have seen it first before making my purchase.

Sturdy Leaf Skimmer

Does the job!

Does what it is designed to do. A little loose when fitted into an aluminium pole but it does work. Our old one lasted 15 years and had a snug fit. That appears to be only difference.

Happy to have a heavy duty aluminum scooper now

Since the flimsy plastic scoopers break so often, we decided to toughen it up by buying an aluminum one this time. This is a very sturdy scooper. We expect that we won't have to change it so often anymore. One small thing we don't like is that the plastic edge around the mess is very thick and makes it more difficult to pick up the debris from the pool bottom. I think we may have to go after the same dirt a couple of times. But for the price it was worth it and the more we use it, the better it will seem to work. 2021: While prepping the pool for summer use, the skimmer broke and we reordered another one of these. It arrived very quickly and we still like it.

Good quality but you pay

it has an aluminum frame so it stronger than plastic but its twice as expensive too, I can go to Canadian tire which is also an over priced garbage store and get a plastic flat skimmer for $16.00. and that's CDN dollars,it may or may not last, I've never tried a plastic one. You have to remember that after you skim off bugs and dirt and leaves etc nobody gently picks of the bugs and dirt they turn the skimmer over and shake it and that's where I thought plastic might break. as well if you go deeper underwater to get something there is a lot of stress on the frame when you come up so in general it has held up this summer with no bending or breaking
