I Love This Thing
If you have a winch on the front of your Jeep (or truck or whatever) - you've probably gone back and forth over what to put on the end of it. A hook? They've been doing that for years, so keep it simple, right? Not so much... hooks are less safe compared to other contemporary options, and can easily be damaged or fail. Hooks were originally designed to pull up - not horizontally. Winching is dangerous enough... eliminating one of the easy failure points just makes sense. But what option is best? After asking this question and doing a lot of research I decided on WARN's Sidewinder. The Sidewinder solves many of the problems associated with the dangers of winching. It's not perfect - nothing is - but it's darn close. The design conceals the cable eyelet (even more important if you run synthetic rope) preventing corrosion, grit, premature wear - and theft - and prevents the 'need' for yet another, expensive accessory (calling itself a 'rope guard.'). No need for that. The Sidewinder is a closed system solution, meaning tree-savers and other things won't accidentally slip out through the wimpy, lightly-sprung, sheet-metal gate of the small-throated stock hook. This thing is solid; sturdy, beefy: a big, aluminum body and a hefty, steel pin. The spring clip holding the clevis pin is strong - and awkward to access when snugged up against the fairlead, meaning once you get this thing on it's not going to accidentally fall off. The Sidewinder snugs up perfectly to the roller fairlead. I found plenty of hawse fairlead installations but not many roller fairlead applications - it works great, nicely filling the space between the vertical rollers, keeping excess debris from mucking up the inside. And- it's affordable, especially compared to many of the fancier, more colorful options out there. The Sidewinder is good looking (especially in black or gunmetal) in an understated, 'just the facts' sort of way that's less likely to catch the eye of would-be ner'-do-wells tempting them to cut it off. One Achille's heal I hear others mention is losing the pin. Yes, you can lose the pin and that would be a drag. But if you cinch it down snugly using the hole atop the pin it'll never be a worry, especially given your screwing a steel pin into an aluminum shackle body (which can sometimes create its own binding problems). I keep a small awl in my tool kit to snug it down and loosen when needed. This eliminates the risk of losing the pin - but does make it so it's not finger tight anymore. I reckon you've gotta pick your battles... no solution is perfect, but the Sidewinder fits all the criteria I was searching for to replace the standard winch hook and I'm extremely pleased with it. Always read the instructions and practice safe winching technique. I can highly recommend this product.

One less piece of recovery gear to carry
I moved from a Factor55 Pro Link to this. I like that this piece is ready to mount up to a strap without the need for an additional shackle. Big fan.

It's a whole lot beefier than in the pictures
I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box, I wanted something that let me hide the rope to protect it from UV light and the weather, I got that and also a really beefy link I can directly shackle to a recovery point or tree saver. Big heavy beefy good value for money

A great functional, practical and cosmetic addition
I purchased this WARN Epic Sidewinder primarily to keep my winch rope tight and unexposed. With the winch hidden in the bumper the synthetic rope stays out of the sun, except for the lead. This shackle has rubber feet on the backside that snug up against the hawse fairlead, while hiding the entirety of the synthetic rope. The shackle is well built and looks great. It was easy to install with a pair of snap ring pliers, took all of 5 minutes. Plus, it looks much neater than a rope stretched over to a tow hook. I am very happy with this purchase.

Very nice.
I recently purchased a warn winch for my Jeep and wanted a captive system for it. I picked this one because it’s a warn. It was super easy to install and less expensive than some of the other ones. I used it last weekend to pull some bushes and stumps out with a choker and it was plenty durable.

Good quality and heavy duty,

Great deal
Pro's: Covers your synthetic rope end to protect from crap and UV, Rubber surfaces where it will sit against your hawse. Heavy duty Nicely finished. Cons: Opening could be wider to allow tree savers to sit flat on pin. Does not come with a retaining wire for the pin, you loose that pin and you now have a paperweight.

Quite big but looks Awsome
Happy with the way it looks on the truck. Now time to put it to the test in the bush!
