Genuine activated carbon eliminates odors & VOC's that other generic brands don't
I bought this because I had been buying the HRF-AP1 from the largest brick & mortar retailer in the world (starts with a W). They stopped carrying it, seemingly overnight, and instead only offered only HEPA and carbon prefilters packaged together. You replace the carbon pre-filter 5x to 10x more often than HEPA cartridge so that move made no sense. You would be hard pressed to find a genuine Honeywell HRF-AP1 pre-filter in stock anywhere locally or even on the web. I initially bought a 2 pack of 16"x48" prefilters described as "odor reducing", "carbon pad", & "charcoal filter". This was a major aftermarket domestic filter company that sells on Amazon. I knew something was off when I opened their filters and there was an ODOR. What? Wait a minute, how am I detecting something like a VOC coming from an activated carbon filter? I compared the filtering ability of some HRF-AP1 remnants to the aftermarket junk I bought and wasn't all that shocked to fink that the honeywell remnant removed just about any source of odor I put in front of it while the aftermarket had no affect on any of the same odor sources or VOC sources. Yeah, I eventually became disgusted by the smells accumulating in my living space and aggressively searched for a viable alternative. I noticed that Amazon manages to keep the HRF-APP1 A+ version in stock for just a few bucks more than what I was used to paying. It threw me off that they used a generic pic of the carbon filter wrapped around a drum HEPA cartridge instead of a pic of the retail box which one might expect to see. The only difference I can see is that the A+ version has white flecks in the filter which are identified by Honeywell as "zeolite" which you can read all about on wikipedia. It has some ups and downs. For instance now I don't feel comfortable wearing a square of HRF-APP1 inside a mask since zeolite is a respiratory irritant. You can cut this Honeywell activated carbon filter sheet to fit just about anything that you need a filter or pre-filter. For example, I use it for odor reduction as a prefilter on two Holmes HEPA units. I can make 4 prefilters with a little left over for other things such as deodorizing the fridge, sock drawers, bath towel storage area etc. etc. I suspect that Honeywell doesn't like that their product gets used for so many other applications, especially HEPA units made by other brand names/manufacturers since a major retailer started to only carry the package deal of HEPA and carbon pre-filters together. If so, what would be the reasoning? They are making MORE money than if they only sold the carbon filters to people needing them for Honeywell products. This is one of the most value packed and versatile products out there. I hope this review helps others in making a wise purchase.

Better quality and easier to cut.
You can get cheaper pre-filters but they will be a pain to cut right to fit your air filter. These have lines right in the filter for easier measuring and cutting.

Just the pre filter
I prefer the combo filter set

something so simple should cost so much, it use to be 7 dollars
gouging is the word that comes to mind, it's a simple layer of carbon filter material, almost 20 dollars after tax, and it use to be just 7 dollars a few years ago, another thing I don't like about Amazon is that they fluctuate the prices on the same exact prices hourly, I'm sure there's an Ai algorithm maximizing profit. Item works ok, but way over prices for what it is. Must be 1000% profit for Amazon

Last 90 days, works great
Last the 90 days, always change them on time, when the yellow light comes on, our first machine lasted 6 years with regular filter changes. Put in black 90 days later remove beige, full of dust!

Pricy but the result are visible
I replace this filter ever 3 months. When replacing the old filter you can visibly see the dust and particles that this filter helps pull from the air.

Same as before? / Word of caution shopping on the A
I wanted to post this review to comment on the other reviews that mention the pre-filters are "not the same and thinner." I have to say that I did not really notice any difference between this pre-filter and other pre-filters of the past. I actually had slivers of old pre-filters (since I always have to trim the pre-filter to make it fit properly in my purifier), and upon direct comparison, I could see no difference. BUT... HERE'S MY WORD OF CAUTION with this product and virtually all others being sold on the A. Attempt to refrain from purchasing products from 3rd party sellers. 3rd party sellers have discovered and exploit how easy it is to sell counterfeit goods on the A. I did notice that those complaining of the pre-filters being "thinner" had appeared to have purchased them from 3rd party sellers. Many 3rd party sellers sell Chinese-made counterfeit goods. That look *ALMOST* look identical to the genuine products. I remember back in 2012 ordering a "Samsung" charger from a 3rd party seller only to receive a ridiculously-similar looking counterfeit. No matter how similar they make the counterfeits look, they're not genuine, and will not work as well as the genuine goods. Most recently, a 3rd party seller sold me FAKE SPARK PLUGS! Yes, you read that correctly! UN-BELIEVABLE, right?! YES! My trusty, good ole' Honda's super-accurate ECU had determined engine knocking. The diagnostic system actually had indicated that the spark plugs were to blame. But, how, thought I?! I just replaced the spark plugs! Long-story-short. The spark plugs were refuse! Took me 5 months to figure it out! Almost ruined my motor in the process! Do yourselves a favor, unless you entirely trust a 3rd party seller, pay a little more and get it direct. Not that I'm happy with the A's service, or enthused with their domination of the market, but if you have to, it's best to buy direct. :{ Peace and prosperity to all!
