EMT Conduit is Easily Re-Purposed

The all zinc cast couplers are much better to use if you live in a humid climate. Some of the steel couplers are glavanized, but some are plain steel. EMT is not rated for weather exposed use, but under an eave, on a porch is OK, but a humid or coastal climate will corrode the heck out of it. The cast zinc fittings are worth the extra cost, in those situations. I've used EMT thinwall conduit for decades in construction, and the numerous shops I've owned or leased, but it's only been since I retired due to a disabilty that I've discovered what a wonderfully re-purposeable material. The first discovery was 1/2" PVC pipe telescopes over 1/2" EMT conduit. Slide short pieces of scrap PVC over the EMT, then use PVC fittings to built most anything you can imagine. Cover it with poly tarp for some cheap storage, (I added a roof & second story to a UPS size laundry truck for storage of materials. Pallets and some scrap waferboard, and it has a great floor, as well.). Cover it with clear poly sheetind and instant greenhouse. Keep your eyes open at garage/estate sales, and pick up a conduit bender, and you can duplicate my latest EMT project. I have a 93 year old next neighbor, who I've 'adopted'. To make it safer for her to come visit, and see the flowers and such my wife plants, I've been making EMT arches over our gates, and across our driveway, to Velcro our garden hoses to, so they are off the sidewalks and driveway. It also makes cleaning them with the leaf blower, since I'm not fighting hoses, blocking debris. These two are only a few of the things I've used EMT for, other than electrical. It's easily scavenged from commercial remodels, (smaller strip mall remodels are the best); ask for the job boss, and ask him if you can scavenge materials for re-use. Emphasize you're reusing it. They're more likely to be generous than if they think you're just going to scrap it for money. I have literally been given thousands of dollars worth of materials, just by asking to scavenge. (Come dressed for work, with boots, gloves, etc, and they're less likely to be worried you're a clueless injury, waiting to happen!)
