Great Ladle
I was hesitant to spend this much on a ladle, but my husband told me to go for it and so I did. We needed something we could use to ladle boiling water out of our 9 qt. Le Creuset pot (see my review for this pan) that wouldn't scrape the pot or leave marks. This ladle is nice and smooth, is weighted nicely, and does exactly what we needed it to do. It is even nicer than we expected. Full, it holds between 1/2 and 3/4 C. It seems to be made to last a long time. We have been ladling boiling water out of it several times a day since it arrived on 8/16/13 and it still looks as good as it did the day it arrived. It is easier to use and has a much more balanced feel to it than the stainless steel ones we have. It has a classy look to it, if a ladle can be considered classy. It also has a hanging loop attached to the hole at the top, that makes it convenient for using. I always have it ready when I need it, looped over the drawer handle next to the stove. I recommend this lovely ladle to anyone looking for a wood ladle that will last, do a good job of serving soup or whatever else you have in mind, and will look good doing it!

WHOPPER of a CUP!
I'd have given this 5-stars overall IF I kept it. They really need a photo here where the ladle is in the hands of a chef poised over a bowl, plate, pot, something so indicate the SIZE of that ladle cup. I guessed ... and was off by a mile. The ladle is indeed exquisite - feels fabulous in-hand, so silky! Loved the grains on mine, but ye gods the cup of the ladle sure looks like it holds 1.5C of liquid. I guess someone else actually measured it? It could easily hold a large grapefruit. So keep that in mind if you order this. I pictured myself over a giant pot 2' high, stirring this like a witch's brew. But alas, for just me and my husband we simply don't need something so enormous. I returned it - loving it anyway and hoping it finds a good home - perhaps in the kitchen of a big hotel or restaurant.

Other brands seem fine, until you've tried Berard!
Great Olive-Wood Ladle, better than the 4 other brands I tried by a large margin. Last Christmas I bought my wife some Olive-wood utensils. Because so many of them had good reviews and because the prices vary widely I sourced from four different companies. Of the four sources, Berard stands out as being in a class of it's own. The other 3 brands are fine, and had I nothing to compare them to of Berard's class I would probably have been quite happy with them. Fact is, now they all seem slightly rough, dry, and dull in comparison. Slowly working toward a nicer set of kitchen tools all around, Berard is the brand I'll be sticking with for wood items, no question. Also, if considering Berard, notice that the 1-star reviews are just complaining about getting a wrong-branded product, not about the product. Liely an Amazon mix-up, should not be counted against berard.

Absolutely top shelf!
Beautiful! Just like all of my olive wood pieces from Berard - none of which were made in France!! Yep - this ladle was made in Tunisia and just what does that mean?? Hats off to the artisans in Tunisia! As they really know how to craft a good ladle!! Please - all of you negative reviewers (especially you one star types...) JUST SEND YOURS BACK! Believe me - there are plenty of happy homes ready to take your Tunisian made Berards off of your hands! For anyone looking for an honest review I will say this: if you are willing to pay the asking price and if you receive one of these and it is of the same caliber as the one I received, you will NOT be disappointed. Period.

An expensive investment but a beautiful one!
I bought a cookbook not that long ago, a soup cookbook, and on the cover was a wooden ladle just like this one. I instantly fell in love with it! I couldn't get it right away and just left it on my wish list until my mom decided to purchase it for me as a housewarming present. I love it in person even more than on the book cover! The wood is beautiful with natural wood grain visible. The wood is smooth and very nice to the touch. I wondered how well it would work when ladling out soup since it is thicker than a standard ladle but that wasn't really an issue. I love my olive wood ladle!

This is a stunning piece of craftsmanship
I had been wanting an olive wood ladle for several years. This one is absolutely stunning. The grain and the finish are superb. The finish on this is actually smoother and silkier than other Berard pieces that I've purchased. It is quite large and won't fit in my cooking utensil drawer. Haha. I don't mind leaving it out on display, as it is so beautiful though.

Made in Tunisia - NOT "French," "Made in France," "Handcrafted in France, using traditional methods"
The ladle is as beautiful as everyone says it is. However, when I received it and looked at the tag, it said, "Made in Tunisia." For $48, I expect it to be made in France, particularly when the product information is laden with how wonderful Berard of Royans, bordering Provence, is. (Also, it had a bit of a natural crack on which they'd used filler.) I have nothing against Tunisia. I would love to visit, I had a colleague from there who was top notch and a lovely lady. But, I don't want to pay $48 for an olive wood ladle sold erroneously as French, with Berard laughing all the way to the bank as they pay Tunisian craftsmen $5/ladle. I returned mine and bought a Tunisian olive wood ladle elsewhere on the internet for $20. Amazon would do well to give an honest report of this product and correct all the "French," "Made in France," "Handcrafted in France, using traditional methods" language.
