Son loves it!
Train works well. My son's new favorite train. We did expect more steam, but still a cool feature!

Easy to use
Bought for my 4 year old grandson. He loves it and plays with it every day. Safe and easy for him to use without supervision.

Battery drains very soon.
Since this device is not chargeable and the battery drains easily, I have to keep changing the batteries quite often.

Excellent but expensive Brio train with STEAM!
This is a really nice train. We bought this to replace ‘Red Train’ from Brio. We wore out Red Train. This train is a nearly perfect replacement. It has two lights up front (which blink when the train is in reverse). STEAM!! You fill the engine (via the chimney) and it blows out cold steam. Super cool! It has a mild whine when running but otherwise has no noise. The train is heavy compared to other trains or cars. I think the extra weight is very helpful for traction. This was the biggest problem compared to Red Train. Red Train didn’t have enough traction. It had plenty of power though. This train has plenty of power (2 AAA batteries) to carry three or four cars even up inclines. It looks cool and works great. My four year old was able to operate this train after a brief instruction period (need to ‘push and hold’ the power button for example). I have it four stars because it solves the number one issue with Red Train - traction. It also has steam! The back of the train has the typical magnet connector instead of the tag-along trolley that Red Train has. This helps the train back up easier compared to Red Train. I took a star away because this train doesn’t have the Choo Choo and bell sounds that Red Train has and doesn’t have the red ‘reverse’ lights. I thought those were cool features. Overall this train is expensive but my kid loves it and it is a great replacement for Red Train that literally wore out.

Steam featured stopped working in less than a week
My grandson wanted a steam engine for Christmas to go with his wooden tracks. This was one of his only requests. I looked around for a LONG time, and this Brio train was the only one I could find that actually had a steam feature and was also compatible with the wooden tracks. I was not thrilled with the $50 price tag for this engine, but it was at least a Brio, and I felt I could be confident in the quality because of that. Christmas morning the train worked beautifully, and my grandson was thrilled. However, in less than a week, the steam feature no longer worked. We tried everything. Considering that I paid close to double what I would have for any other battery train JUST for the steam, we returned the engine. Very disappointed grandson. I would order another and hope it was a fluke, but going back and seeing other reviews, I see this is a common problem. I wish I would have read them sooner, but I just ordered based on Brio's reputation. Now trying to find something else to replace it. :/

Great toy, but ON/OFF system different from other BRIO toys
Long story short, you have to hold on to the ON/OFF button for 2-5 seconds to turn on the toy. Pushing it once or hold it not long enough will not turn it ON. I had to do an exchange thinking my first toy was defective. Only when I received the replacement did I notice it has the same issue. Then I started to think it may not be the toy, but probably the battery or maybe I wasn't installing the battery correctly. After more than 15 minutes trying different things did I find the solution.

It works better than other Brio models
Downgraded from five stars to three. After a few more hours of play, the train is broken. The buttons take turns not responding and it actually turns itself on and off. No joke. It kept turning off randomly on my son. Even more weirdly, it also turns itself back on. I had it turned off sitting on the floor after my son went to bed and maybe 5-10 minutes later I heard it driving across the floor on it's own. I turned it off again and not even 5 minutes later the thing turned itself back on for a second time! The smoke feature is fine, and it does work, but the actual motorized train itself is the most notable part. It works better (sometimes far better) than any of the other Brio battery trains we have tried. We have a smaller green engine from the construction set and a standalone red locomotive and this one outruns them both. It's heavier and thus sticks to the track far better. Pulling 7-8 train cars at a time is no problem. My 5yr old son has been playing with it for the past few hours after getting it for Easter and has not tired of it yet. The steam part is a little tricky to get going but is pretty cool once it starts working.
