Sturdy construction, cover fits well; alloy is a bit tricky to machine
Normally I use plastic BUD enclosures for building small electrical or electronic projects, but for this one I wanted to be able to use the case as a heat sink for solid-state relaysMYSWEETY 3PCS SSR-40DA Solid State Relay Single Phase Semi-Conductor Relay Input 3-32V DC Output 24-380V AC ... . It came with a self-adhesive gasket for the cover and six cover screws. The gasket is somewhat tricky to apply; I had to adjust it a bit to get the holes to line up. Once that was done, the top, gasket, and screws fit perfectly. I used a 1 3/8" step drill,Neiko 10194A Titanium Step Drill Bit, High Speed Steel | 1/4" to 1-3/8" | Total 10 Step Sizes , to make openings for a cord bushing https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00303FYKA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and a round 220 volt outlet in one of the short sides. The holes were perfect, but the alloy seems rather abrasive (high silica?); it scraped much of the titanium coating off the bit. Probably I should have used a different lubricant. I bolted the solid state relays to the bottom of the box with a layer of inexpensive (not silver) heat sink compound, and the area is barely warm to the touch at about 7 to 10 amps load (the relays are rated for 40 amps). They could have been mounted on the short side opposite the power connections and still had plenty of heat dissipation. The box has two pairs of cast-in ridges on each of the longer sides and one pair on the shorter sides, as shown in the product information. The ridges might be useful to hold circuit boards (not needed for this project), but they somewhat restrict the options for bolting components to the box walls. Although I didn't give this 5 stars, I would buy the same product again.
