PERFECT FOR BASKING - WE'VE BEEN USING THESE FOR YEARS UPDATED REVIEW: LAST TWO ARRIVED BROKEN
UPDATED REVIEW: 9 22 2019 The last two rocks arrived broken. These are made out of some sort of ceramic materials, so this is dangerous. Not sure of the issue. The outer box this last time was in perfect condition. Amazon had packed the inner box extremely well - it was totally enclosed in bubble wrap. However, the styrofoam sheeting inside was demolished and had deteriorated into tiny annoying bits of styrofoam that stick onto everything. Then when we got to the rock, there were big pieces of sharp ceramic pieces inside, plus some styrofoam was literally stuck to the interior. While these are awesome for basking in a forty gallon tank, they are of no use if they arrive broken. Additionally, the styrofoam issue, which always seems to be present is a pain in the neck. This would have gotten five stars had it not been for the continuing issues with broken rocks. It's not go if it's broken. Very very disappointed. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I use this solely as a basking rock for one of our rescue turtles. We've used these filters for years, but solely to bask. Our turtle was curious about the cord protruding from the rock so we were afraid she'd bite it and get electrocuted, hence our decision not to use the filter attachment. Regardless, as a rock this is awesome because it comes up tall enough on the side of the glass that the distance between rock and lights is ideal. The top part is flat and perfectly sized for basking. Our of all the basking equipment, rocks, logs etc, this along with a floating log, are the best basking setups we've found. We do periodically replace them although they clean up easily.

Good filter terrible cliff
Had two large cliffs come in. First one the filter fizzed out and stopped working first day. Got a second one for the filter and the cliff itself was shattered. The filter is a nice high capacity and has kept my 4” turtles water and all her feeder fish (rosy reds) and a couple Chinese algae eaters (not a recommended tank mate unless you have a larger tank/tub to accommodate their foot long adult length) in clean waters. My issue has been exclusively with the cliff itself. Before I separated the cliff and filter I found that the algae eaters would hide out inside the cliff and Would rarely see them cleaning the exterior. Even had some minnows get stuck inside on a few occasions. I quickly noticed a foul smell coming out of the cliff whenever I took it out to clean and even found two dead minnows that got stuck inside the cliff at one point which caused me to flip the rock on its side too open to create a type of cave instead. My issue with the cliff is that it is very difficult to clean the inside as much of it was hollow and allowed fish to get stuck in very small nooks and crannies that are unreachable. During a deep tank clean (1-2x monthly) and separating my RES from all fish into separate tanks I noticed no CAE in the tank. They were in the cliff and I could hear them inside. I had to destroy the cliff and the amount of sludge and the foul smell emitting from the small spaces inside was absolutely disgusting and explained why my water was smelling terrible even with 3 weekly partial water changes and syphoning. After finally releasing the CAE from the inner part of the Cliff and disposing of it I would definitely not recommend purchasing this set. Since the removal of the cliff I have not had any smell issues from the now two tanks I have (55 gal for RES and 1 CAE and 25 gal for the minnows and 1 CAE) everyone seems to be a lot happier separated and without the cliff. If anything I recome the the 350 filter it came with. Very easy to separate and clean

Great for Basking. Not so much a filter.
I really like the look of this product for my turtle tank. It has a nice natural cliff look to it and a good amount of space for turtle up to 9 inches. Though 9 inches is right at the edge of outgrowing it. The filter is okay, nothing super special and can be hard to get the suction cups to stick to the inside of the turtle cliff itself. I don't really see the point in this as a filter as the filter is not large enough for a turtle of any size in my opinion. Maybe as a secondary filter to a canister filter or a place to put carbon if you are in to using carbon. Other than that I like the filter for the power head not the actual filtration. Which is mainly why i bought it. I like the extra water movement. I did not care so much about it actually filtering anything. it makes a neat little stream out of the turtle cliff and if out of the water a little bit can kind of make a little trickle waterfall. I recommend this for anyone with turtles. There are several sizes depending on your turtle and tank size. I recommend going with the largest tank, filter, equipment, etc. you can buy up front. It will save you money in the long run when they grow up.

OK but could be better
Looks good and is a good idea, but needs some improvements. The filter that comes with the medium cliff is too small. I have a 20 gallon long tank that is about half full and the water only stays clean for about 2 days. I tried adding more filter material like the product book suggested but it did not help. If you take the filter out of the rock and use it in the tank itself its better, but that defeats the purpose of buying this thing! It is also very hard for my turtle to climb on to. The bottom portion is not angled so there is nothing for him to use for traction. He has to grab onto the outcropping rock thing and try to heave himself up....I ended up putting another rock up against it for him to be able to get onto it. Also, the top is angled for some reason so when its wet he slides right off. The angle also takes away from the width of the basking area as he will only sit on the flat area. This would be alot better if they did some re-engineering and put a stronger filter in it.

Misleading product information
The fourth picture is nothing like the item I received. There was no mention of the plug being an eu plug despite being listed on Amazon uk site and from a UK seller, therefore you’d expect a UK plug. I am willing to keep the item but annoyingly had to buy an eu adapter to use it. I’m also not sure if this is safe for long term use! It also looks like the inside is cracked, not sure if this happened in transit or if it’s intentional because it’s on the inside.

Avoid for your turtles sake.
If I could give It 0 stars, I would. The rock lid slides off with ease. The filter Is not fit for work. The product came In a box full of polystyrene balls (which was a budle of joy to clean up!)This Is a huge dissappointment from Exo Terra. Returned.

Not worth the price but looks good
Doesn’t clean tank that well. Had it for about a month and a half and the filter has already broken so I’ve had to use my old one which works better. The rock part was falling apart on the inside and filter didn’t fit properly anyway. Make sure you have a us to uk plug as it doesn’t come with it. In tank looks great and if you can fit the filter the waterfall looks amazing and my turtles love climbing on it.
