Buy more than one you won't regret it.
About 15 years ago at Lowe's I bought a deckmate spacing tool. They no longer sell them. Looked on Amazon they're now being branded as Johnson. It's the exact same tool same specs 100% identical except for color. I use three of them on a 16 ft deck bored. I didn't realize I had lost one otherwise I would have bought three of them. A 16-ft run I would definitely use four spacers. Saves time for running back and forth and checking the gaps. After 15 years and they're being made identical that should tell you something about the quality of these spacers. And like one other reviewer said you could go to the trouble of ripping a piece of wood and set it in there but that's going to take time and more material and with these things being only $9 each it's not worth the headache of ripping your own spacing board.

Does what it is supposed to do
I like this for determining spacing. Not sure about the holes in it. They are not useful at all as screws do not fit through the holes. Overall a good item to space deck boards

These are great.

Great time saver. Well made.
Make installation faster and gaps were more consistent. Used 3 on 12 and 16 foot boards. Set boards with several screws before putting in all screws this insured gap consistency.

Rebuilt my own cedar deck by myself with this and a bowrench!
A couple of years ago I faced a dilemma - my cedar deck was starting to rot in places, the previous owner (who built the deck) painted the boards, which also made maintenance a nightmare. I got quotes from contractors to rebuild my deck which were insane. Composite, cedar, whatever, it was a very high number. Then I looked into doing it myself. The base of the deck was solid, but the deck boards, railing and skirting needed to be replaced, at a materials cost of around 25-33% of what was quoted to me. I decided to go cedar again, but ensure that the boards were spaced correctly and I would use stain instead of paint. Between this tool and a bowrench I felt I was able to tackle the job. I also needed a few other tools - sawzall for demolition, 2 cordless drills (one with bit, one with driver bit), compound miter saw, pocket jig, table saw and a planer (due to some angles in the way the deck was constructed I needed to thin down some 2x4s). I'm somewhat handy but NOT a pro. I was able to resurface a 15x30 deck (including stairs) over a couple months working an hour or 2 each night after work plus around 8 hours each weekend, by myself. This tool was very helpful in 2 ways - first, in ensuring proper gaps between the boards when using the bowrench, and second, to determine proper hole spacing when screwing the boards down. There's nothing like the satisfaction of a job well done, and many thousands of dollars saved!

Worked like a charm!
There’s a shortage of Lumber in CA — so Contractors are raising prices to a historical high. Due to this, I decided to DIY my IPE deck. I wanted to make sure my screws would align perfectly and that the entire deck had the same spacing. My IPE deck came out so gorgeous. This tool was imperative to making the deck look professionally installed. I have all my 1/8 spaces between each board perfect, the screws are all aligned like a real professional. I would recommend this to anyone building a deck, DIYers or pros. Actually wish I would’ve bought 2, would’ve worked faster.

Strong, sturdy deck spacing tool
It is certainly up to the task. I've built two decks so far using this tool and it worked perfectly keeping boards neatly spaced. A few times it got pinned between boards but came out with ease. Its been hit multiple times with a rubber hammer during use and pinched between boards needing a framing hammer to pry out and did not break. I fully recommend this product.

Handy jig when building a deck
I have one of this jigs for a number of years now and found it very useful for spacing the deck boards. Prior to purchasing my first unit, I used spacers that inevitably would fall to the ground. Now I have three Deck Mates because the original one I had a hard time keeping my friends from using when we were building decks.

Absolute Necessity.
This spacer is an absolute must for any deck building project. Excellent Design, with the pilot hole template in all of the right places. Very well belt, durable. Doesn't feel like a normal cheap plastic spacer.

Perfectly spaced deck boards
This made installing deck boards a joy. Perfectly spaced boards and screws that are fully lined up. The build quality is very solid too. A great little tool!
