This is a monster winch
I already had a 4 ton winch which I had to rebuild after using it within its rating because its cable reel distorted under load and jammed the mechanism. I searched the web for a higher rated winch but found nothing in New Zealand above a 4 ton rating. The Neiko 2256A 5 ton winch was available in America and cost me two and a half times its purchase cost by the time I got it shipped to New Zealand, but it was well worth it. It is very strongly constructed and I have used it to winch my car out of the garage when the battery failed, and it helped me remove a tree stump in my garden. I'm thankful that I found a winch that performs up to its rating without requiring a rebuild!

Good choice
There's a lot of choices here and they all seem about the same. I chose Neiko because I've had some of their other tools and have always been pleased. For a first time user, this tool was easy enough to figure out and use. I recovered my riding lawn mower out of mud using an axle strap and this winch. It pulled it out super easy. Definitely a nice addition to store in the shed.

Good product
The come-along-wench is sturdy and easy to use. It's strong enough to pull down a tree limb so that I could cut it.

Heavy duty
It will be used for many purposes around the ranch and every part of this come along seems to be heavy duty.

Wooly Mammoth Tooth Puller
WARNING! SAFETY ALERT! UPDATE: 8/30/11 I've been using two of these Come-A-Longs since 2007. A failure occurred on 8/29/11 that could have caused serious injury or death. I always inspect this equipment before use. Even so, close inspections while pulling heavy loads is sometimes hard to do. Look closely at my uploaded photo image on the product page. Notice the bolts or steel pins that hold the hook and pulley. These bolts are held in place by paper-thin, U-Shaped Retainer Clips seated into a shallow grove around the tip of the bolt. If one of these retainer clips is accidentally bumped during use, it can dislodge and the bolt can come free suddenly releasing your load. This happened to me. These 5-ton pullers weigh 18 pounds each. When working with these Come-a-longs in conjunction with various cables and ropes, this can easily happen without notice. This is a serious safety issue. I'm replacing these stock bolts and U-Shaped retainer clips with hardened steel bolts and lock nuts coated with Red Locktite 271 which must be heated to 500 degrees to remove. Coating the threads with JB Weld would also work. I strongly suggest anyone else using these Come-a-longs do the same. It seems that I was wrong in my early reviews of this product. I apologize to those who called it cheap. I should have listened. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. GOOD LUCK. Heavy duty and top quality. As far as I can tell, since I don't have a 5-ton scale, the actual capacity is probably over 5-tons. I had several huge trees, 90-foot hardwoods, that needed to come down. With 14,000 lb. test-strength bullrope in the top of the target tree and the pully anchored with log-chain to the base of another tree, I began cranking the lever. I wanted to make certain the tree fell exactly where I wanted. I had to back off to keep from pulling some out of the trees out of the ground, root ball and all, before laying a chainsaw to them. This puller works - and it appears to be made well enough that I feel safe using it. That's very important. I inspected every detail before I put it to use. I could not find any markings indicating where it was made. That might be important to some. When placed next to the standard 2-ton come-a-long, it is easy to see the difference in size, weight and quality. Two connected in tandem to 14,000 lb. bull rope is sufficient to pull a monster hickory tree that is leaning over a house and make it fall away from the house. Tree experts wanted $800.00 for the job. I did it for less than $100.00. UPDATE: 5-9-10 After nearly two years of use, the only complaint I have is the spring clips on the hooks bend easily and at times refuse to release whatever is in the metal hook. Recently, I broke a section of bullrope rated at 9500 lbs. test strength. The running bowline knot I had looped onto the steel hook held. The rope snapped in a place where nothing was touching it. I'll use only 23,000 lb. test bullrope from now on. And for those who are wondering why I don't use chain, chain does not stretch. Bullrope does. When 200 feet of bullrope is tightened to the limits to the top of a tall hickory or oak, several thousand of pounds of force continue to pull the tree in the right direction for several feet even as the tree begins to fall. The average DIYer will never need more power than this. If I was needing 5-tons of pulling power on a commercial application, I'd look for an OSHA approved 10-ton device. There is an old military saying that goes like this: Always ask for double of what you need if you expect to get what you need.

This baby will move anything
Liked the heftiness of the mechanisms (gears, cable, etc), but it doesn't keep the unit engaged without constant finger pressure on the ratchet mechanism. It would be helpful if there was a setting to keep the ratchet engaged.

Does the Job with some tinkering at a low price but requires tinkering and is not user friendly
Pros: inexpensive hasn't broken yet mostly does what it is supposed to do Cons: I had to disassemble and grease the unit to get the cable roller to rotate free of the lever arm (which is required for both loading and especially unloading the tension) the levers you have to compress to allow the cable roller to unlock and to allow the lever arm to move free of the ratchet device are not user friendly - recommend some extremely heavy duty spring clamps on hand unless you have 3 or 4 hands.

pull my van out of mud and stump removal
My Van stuck in the mud of my back garden. The rescue company said they only cover electrical and mechanical problems. Then I use this power puller solved the problem. My Van is more than 3 ton. Good product! also removed several stumps. Please remember to use some wd-40 to lubricate .

Looks reasonable, but 5 tonnes? Update: USELESS !
Looks reasonable quality and value for something like this. Box arrived battered and looked like it might have been opened previously. No instructions, but not really needed for something like this. Not used yet in anger but looks exactly like others rated at 4 tons not 5. We will see. I'm not planning to pull more than 1-2 tons, don't like using things like this to their stated limits, so imagine it will do just fine for me. UPDATE: 16Sep2016: I've deducted a star after using it for 2nd time for tree removal (pulling a chain on a 60ft fir to ensure it fell in the intended direction). Releasing the ratchet(s) to extend the cable is really awkward with one person unless you already have the cable end connected to something immovable. You need like 3 hands to keep everything released so the cable will pull out freely. Slightly crazy, but I guess it makes it unlikely to release accidentally when pulling. The pull was great however. Just really awkward to extend the cable to set it all up. UPDATE 13Nov2017: After using a 3rd time, parts of the laminated gears have slipped/de-laminated. The item is now unusable because the cogs/release are not in sync. RE-rated as 1-star. The item is now useless and probably hasn't applied a force of more than 1-2 tonnes during its unaccomplished service life. I might be able to disassemble and pin or weld the gears but why should I have to? Buy at your peril... (of course if the seller were to make some offer to redress my disappointment, say a decent refund, then as part of my product-ownership experience I might be able to improve my feedback...)

A piece of garbage. Don't buy !
Used only one time and it failed. The mecanism just jammed and came out of the casing. It's rated at 5 tons but it's more like 1 ton. Cheap chinese junk. Spend a little more and have it for life. Well, live and learn.

very happy with purchase
used this to drag a 27 foot camper trailer from one end of my property to the other. A truck couldn't get in. Winched from back of trailer frame, to whatever tree was in the position i wanted to go. Very happy with results. trailer moved very easily, even over small tree stumps, etc. Highly recommended. no idea what i'll ever need this for in the future, but because it works so well, i'm glad i own it anyway.
