Hex shank makes the tapping a breeze !!
When retrofitting a Delta T2 fence onto a Steel City tablesaw, I have to drill & tap 10 M8-1.0 holes into the 3/16" thick steel rail. I first drilled the holes with 17/64 drill bit. Then I used a tapered type tap with square end bought from Harbor Freight Tools. It took me 2 hours to tap 1 hole and on top of that, the tap wrench cracked. It could not hold the square end of the tap at all. With the hex shank on this drill & tap bit, I put on my T-handle driver and I can feel it cutting into the steel rail. Tapping the remaining 9 holes took me less than 20 minutes. I did not use the drill part because I pre-drilled with a drill bit so I cannot rate that part. But for me, the tapping function was well worth the money. With the pre-drilling, this bit lined up and tapped the holes straight. Why don't ALL tapping bits have hex shank? +

Almost Effortless
I had my doubts about the "high speed steel", but the prouct worked very well. I was able to drill and tap 9 holes with it, in mild steel. It still seems very sharp. None of the holes took more that 1 minute to drill and tap. The item I was working on was the skid plate of my truck. 5 of the holes were in the frame of the truck, the other 4 were in the skid plate. The holes started out as 7 mm X 1.00. The drill bit part removed the 7 mm threads, the tap cut clean 8 mm threads. The new bolts fit perfectly, and start easily. I had concerns about being able to turn the tap back out with the drill. It was very easy, just don't force it. Put the drill in reverse and back out slowly. When the threads line up with the tap, the tap backs itself right out, and cleans the threads on the way.
