A GREAT GRATER!!!
My current hand grater is one of those 4-sided jobbers that I just hate. It has a tiny handle at the top that is very difficult to hold on to. It is very lightweight and goes all over the place when I use it. I can't tell you how many times I've nicked my knuckles on this thing. I've put up with it because I haven't seen anything in the stores I felt would be better. Then -- I saw this hand grater. Can I just say . . . I LOVE THIS GRATER! I thought it was going to be flimsier than it actually is. I wasn't at all hopeful when I ordered it, but I thought I would get it anyway since it bears the KitchenAid brand name. Boy am I glad I took a chance and ordered this great grater! It has enough weight to it that it feels secure in my hand, and unlike lightweight hand graters, doesn't go all over the place when I shred cheese. Don't get me wrong, it does move some when you use it, but I don't have to expend as much energy to keep it where it should be. I don't thing I'm explaining this very well, but I don't know how to explain it better. The handle is 5-1/2" long. My hand fits snugly around the handle and it is long enough that I can grip it very securely while I shred cheese! One thing that I absolutely LOVE, is that this hand grater has a plastic cover that keeps my hand from getting sliced when I reach into my tool holder (shaped like a flower pot) to pull it out. It removes and re-installs very easily -- just slides on and off. If you are looking for a hand grater, I really don't think you'll find a better one than this KitchenAid beauty. I absolutely LOVE mine, and I think you will love it too!!!

Effective and study tool to grate cheese and vegetables
I found this cheese/vegetable grater easy to use for two reasons: the handle is long enabling me to get a steady grip, and the stainless steel cutting edges are sharp. I used it to cut a block of cheese to coarse grain. The cutting surface only provides one size of grating. (If you are zesting a lemon, you may have to chop the larger shavings into a finer grain by hand with a knife.) This medium-size grater comes with a plastic sheath that fits snugly over the tool to protect hands when not in use. The tool is dishwasher safe and durable. It’s handy, efficient, and easy-to-clean.

What a Grate Product!
Yes, you can buy shredded cheese at the grocery store, but A) it's more expensive much of the time, B) you can't control the quality of the cheese you're using, and C) it often has what seems to be a waxy coating. Fresh grated is just better, although yes, it takes more effort. Growing up and through college, I had those old school box graters, or even worse, a single grater surface with no major handle - only a small wire semi-circle on top. It's safe to say that I lost some fingers to those graters. They were awful. When I finally got a grater like this one (and this one is AWESOME) - a sturdy, easy-to-hold handle and flat surface with wicked-sharp cutting bits, my life changed. Grating went from being a dangerous chore to something not so bad. My daughter loves latkes, and this tears through potatoes and onion. Cheddar is no match. It's sharp. You will need to be a bit careful. Luckily, it comes with a plastic cover that you can slip onto the blade to keep it and you safe in the utensil drawer. If you need a new grater, you should seriously consider this one!

Grates good but not a good fit for my kitchen.
The Kitchen Aid gourmet etched grater is a very strong and sturdy grater. The grater has an ergonomic shape and design. Plus the vibrant red color is pleasant. It grates very well and is easy to hold in hand while using it. A feature I like the most is that the “cuts” on the grating surface are on both sides. This helps you grate in both directions and make the grating process faster. But somehow, it doesn’t feel like the right fit for our kitchen. First off, it feels too big. Even the grating surface has pretty big holes and it’s not the right one if you are looking to grate something very fine. I would have liked it of it had a few more methods of grating added. For example, a small portion could have small holes for fine grating. This would have alleviated my concern about coarse grating. To increase the life of the grater and to avoid breaking it, I would suggest having the steel handle extend into the plastic part. Correctly it feels like the plastic handle is connected to the steel grater section and would be much more prone to breaking if excess pressure was applied.

Shaves extremely fine
I tried this grater on carrots, Parmesan cheese, potatoes, and zucchini, and it didn’t work too well on any of them. The vegetables tended to get ground into pulp, and the cheese was shaved too fine to be useful. I thought it might be useful for garlic, but I didn’t want to risk having my fingers that close to the cutting edge. For the same money, a good four-sided grater is a much more useful kitchen tool.

Not your old knuckle buster
I ordered this because my wife still has, and uses an old grater that I call the knuckle buster. You have to grasp whatever you are grating in a way that you grate your fingers and knuckles with it. I got tired of it. This came today and I gave it a quick try with some cheese. It grates perfectly and the right size. It grates nice middle size grated pieces of cheese. The old one grated cheese in varying sizes and also left chunks. This fits great in your hand, and you can hold whatever you are grating in a way that is safe. No more bloody knuckles. This allows you to grate faster, safer and more consistent, Clean up is a breeze. Wash both sides and done. The old one, I couldn't even get my hand inside it to clean it out. Nasty! This is a well built, durable and easy to use grater that will allow me to put the old into retirement. Yay! This greater is a very good value, and it deserves all of the 5 stars it gets from me.
