Time will tell
My first Duty Belt was also River Belt style and lasted me 12+ years. I do not recall the brand as I was a rookie and the names were all foreign to me then. My second belt, also River Belt style, was purchased along with a Garrison/Trouser belt at a local uniform and police equipment supply store that I believed sold quality products. They were both no name brand belts. The Duty Belt was $50 and Trouser belt around $15. Within just over 1 year both of those belts ripped and needed to be replaced. The moral of this story is, like with many other things in life, you often get what you pay for. I did some research and decided to go quality this time around. My intent was to purchase both belts made by Don Hume. Unfortunately after an extensive search I was unable to locate any local or online dealers that carried these belts in stock. I contacted Don Hume directly but was told there belts are made to order and it would take approximately 6 months for them to fulfill my order. Other than Hume I was surprised to find out that very few manufacturers make the River Belt style anymore. It is the only style of belt I've ever used and I was unwilling to change. Safariland is a well known name and I've had some success with other products by them, such as mag holders, so I figured I'd give them a try. Hopefully this will last as long as my first belt. First impression is that it is a decent belt. The front portion that actually buckles in feels like it's got an almost rubber coating on it. Not crazy about the feel, but it does look good and feels durable. As I said in my title line.....Time will tell. As for the trouser belt, during my research one name kept coming up. The Beltman. VERY Pricey, but by all accounts High Quality. There belt is actually meant as a stand alone gun belt. I decided to take the plunge and order one to use primarily as a trouser belt but also for off duty use. Could not be happier. I anticipate this belt lasting to the end of my career and beyond. Highly Recommend it. UPDATE 6/21/14 - Safariland Duty Belt is now 1 year old, has been worn probably 200+ times and is still in fantastic like new condition. Side Note - Beltman trouser belt is really an outstanding product. Ordering a second one.
