A fine addition to already great game
I'd say prelude is not a must have expansion if you want to enjoy the game but it does bring some jumpstart engines to make game a bit more quicker and brings several new corporations to the table. Worth the money for game fans.

Must include
This expansion really speeds up the slow early game. Not sure why it is so expansive though for only cards. Still a must have.

Improves the game but lackluster as an expansion
improves the base game by kick starting the first few turns so they you dont end up taking the same few actions every time, but as an expansion is a bit lack luster. All it really adds cards that are basically just random resource adds, unfortunately they dont really have unique mechanics on them that would change gameplay so functionally its not much different from saying each corporation now starts with a random production or resources. Really you could just have each player roll a few dice at the start of the game and use that to determine what random resources/production each player starts with.

I would add this expansion immediately for anyone new to Terraforming Mars
This is in my opinion an essential expansion for the base game, I would not play without it and will advise anyone new to the game to also pick this up and add it from the beginning. Prelude will not introduce any new mechanics or rules or complications to learning the game, instead it will boost players first few turns so that they aren't spent focusing entirely on resource production. Prelude by now really should just be a part of the base game as it is printed and released, it benefits the early generations of the your plays so much that you'll wonder how you managed without it. The only drawback I can see is that for a brand new player it does add a few more decisions to make during setup and start of the game. Also anyone with a bit of analysis paralysis might find the additional choices a bit troublesome as they are trying to find a perfect combination of all the cards dealt to you during setup for the perfect game. It isn't about achieving a perfect game though and I don't think there are exact combinations of cards that can set someone up for a landslide win. Maybe those with hours and hours of games in Terraforming Mars can and will min/max things to achieve a really strong game but for most of us as average gamers this expansion is just a well needed boost to speed things up and make the first few generations less of a grind. Love it, recommend it, and wouldn't play without it. If you're buying the base game add this as well or if you're looking for which expansion to get first this is for sure the right choice.

Simple and super expansion
You get to choose two awesome cards that boost your space corp at the beginning of the game. It takes no time to learn and once you play with it once you can’t go back. Awesome gift for someone who loves TM

A Nice Enhancement to a Great Game
TM is one of my all time favorite board games. It's always been extremely well received by friends, both gamers and non-gamers. That said, I've avoided this expansion just because it didn't look like that much value. It's just a small deck of cards, that's really it. And, to be honest, the previous TM expansions didn't bring a ton of substance. However, despite the fact that Prelude was the last expansion I picked up, I believe it addresses a mechanical complaint inherent in the base game. TM is a long game, especially with non-gamers prone to analysis paralysis, an especially long game with 4 and 5 players. Prelude shaves off about 30 minutes and 1-2 generations. Now, you may or may not find that a positive thing. I enjoy longer games, but that's not true of everyone. Still, it's not just about a quicker game, that's just side-effect. Instead Prelude offers each player 4 cards of pretty nice, substantive perks, out of which you chose two to keep. These range from one-time resource drops to permanent production increases, and a few other nice touches. All of this helps to jump-start the players' economies and, hopefully, direct them along a pointed strategy. This was something that was rough about the core game. It could take 2-3 generations just to develop any semblance of a strategic aim. This helps point you in a direction, and gives you the resources you need to start making your first bit of headway in that direction...all before the first generation has even materialized. Thus, we generally take 10 generations to complete the game, but now we're doing it in 8-9. I feel like the trade-off is worth it, sacrificing some time off the end of the game, for a tighter, more meaningful game experience for that reduced time is absolutely a positive return, thus I'd recommend playing with this expansion as a permanent addition.

Speeds it up!
So when we first got TM, we played it a lot but then we lost one family member who complained "ugh, it takes FOREVER!" and then promptly stopped playing with us. This got her back into it. Believe me when I say, this speeds up this game like crazy. I followed someone else's advice one time and we kept all four prelude cards - I'm such a rebel - and the game was done in 90 minutes. Just using two as per the instructions reduced it by a considerable amount as well. My one suggestion is MORE CORPORATIONS and MORE GENERAL PLAY CARDS!!!! Or, better yet, give us blank cards for both corporations and general play cards - like they have in Pandemic. We joke around that there should be a "THIS MEANS WAR" card which would allow you to completely wipeout another player's production of one, two or three things in exchange for you having to lose 1/2/3 VPs at the end. Given enough time, and consulting with the oracles of Reddit, I'm sure you'd have a hundred ideas for blank cards. So yes - I agree with the other reviewers that if you love the game but get a little overwhelmed but how long it takes - this is definitely an item you should pick up.

Buy with the base game!
This is an expansion that should just come with the base game it's so good! It gives you a Kickstart from the get go on resources and effectively cuts 15-30 minutes off the total game play. Bringing the game time down to about 90 to 120 minutes. If you're buying the base game, pick this up at the same time and just add it in from your 1st play through. It's simple and you'll be glad you did!

Nice addition
This is a really nice addition to the original game. It helps jump start play a bit, without adding anything too complex or changing the game.

Great Expansion and Accelerates the Game
Great expansion and it really accelerates the game. The prelude cards add a new level of strategy and help your economy in the beginning.

Some free upgrades at the beginning of the game
Prelude adds a few nice touches to the game. It's literally a bunch of cards which will give you two free upgrades at the beginning of the game (at the same moment you will choose the corporation). It includes a few corporations and project cards. It helps to have a stronger strategy since the beginning of the came. Maybe it's priced a big high for that little cards that it comes with.
