Brazos Trekking Poles—Excellent Value
The media could not be loaded. I’ve recently given these Brazos Trekking Poles quite a workout on a couple of very challenging hikes in the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. The first summit, called “3030” for its elevation, required an ascent of more than 1,700 ft to the summit—a little less than the height of One World Trade Center in Manhattan. The second summit, Castle Dome Peak, required an ascent of about 2,100 ft.—about the height of Shanghai Tower in China. The trekking poles worked well for me on both summits and I was really glad I had them!

Excellent For Beginners
I've put a few miles on my feet in Parish (County for you non-Louisiana folks), State, and National Parks and Forests, but never anything over fifteen or so miles. I plan on doing a thirty miler this fall (after having to cancel it last year) and I'll be taking these trekking poles with me. I used them on two short four and six mile trails this weekend and I really liked the feel of the rubberized grip and non-slip strap on my hands and wrists. The anti-shock mechanism works well enough, but neither it nor these poles are meant for moderate terrain. They work fine enough on minor grades on trails and can be planted for stability, but they only offer slight relief on tougher upgrades. The four mile trail I took was actually the toughest of the two trails, as multiple river sloughs make up parts of the trail. This meant that there was plenty of uphill and downhill action, but nothing so drastic that I couldn't have made the hike without the poles. They definitely helped, but they are definitely meant for lighter trails and primarily used for overall stability. These poles feature carbide tips (what I used this weekend) for dirt and light gravel, rubber tips for concrete and stable surfaces, and mud/sand baskets for softer areas to prevent you from planting your pole too deep and getting it stuck. They are adjustable and their range is 43.3" to 53.2" with a fully collapsed length of 27" that can neatly be strapped to most hiking backpacks. Their combined weight is 2.8 pounds, so keep that in consideration when packing for a hike, especially if you plan on carrying them on your back more than you plan to actually use them. These poles are great for stability on easier trails, but they have no business on tougher trails where high winds and deep drop-offs can be found. These poles will most likely not support your weight if you happen to slip on a cliff, so if that's your type of hike, I'd recommend upgrading big time. While I've never personally slipped off of a cliff on a hike, a friend of mine was literally blown off of one by a gust of wind and his trekking pole saved his life because he managed to plant it into the cliff and it didn't break. Again, these are excellent beginner poles or poles for use on easier terrain. They're nice and will get plenty of use from me.

Perfect in almost every way, I am having a hard time making the height of the poles work for me.
The poles compact without tips on is 27". There are two tips, one for roadways and sidewalks, one for more rugged terrain. There is also a mud sand basket that prevents your pole from sinking too far into mud, sand, snow...you get the point. Now the poles need to be twisted and adjusted to the desired height. I had trouble getting them anywhere between 53.2" and 27". Meaning, I could pick the collapsible height, or the full height. I am five foot nine inches, I have purchased trekking poles before, and I personally like my poles at roughly 47". I could not get the poles to set at a height other than 53.2" or 27". I might be doing something wrong, or maybe my poles are not functioning as they should. The handles are very comfortable, my last set of trekking poles were not collapsable and they were made for the height I requested, but the handles left much to be desired. These are some very comfortable handles. I would suggest putting the cloth handle around your wrist and put your hand around the handle.......sometimes, when you are really booking it, you lose grip and it is nice to have a backup plan. So there is also a spring action, so your trekking poles have a little give. I have heard horror stories about people with spring action poles or adjustable poles developing a squeak. So far, no squeak. I like trekking poles, they add a little more aerobic activity, my arms get a decent workout during the walk, they can aid in stability if that concerns you. Those pointy little studs are helpful when you trek across a frozen body of water too. I love my old poles, the height was perfect, they are worn out and cannot be found anymore. Brazil's is a good trekking pole company, and if I can figure out the height issue, these will be more comfortable.
