Thin Metal

OK it has been maybe 20 years since I replaced a lock so when I decided to add a 2nd deadbolt lock to one of my doors because crime has gotten so bad I thought Brinks was a good name for a lock. Big surprise at how light and thin the metal used to make it was!!! I know things have changed over time but how can something with thin metal be considered secure???

Brinks door lock

I like the product, my only issue had to do with no door knob on either side. I was at fault for that mistake. The lock is legit, but doesn’t have a door knob.

Good lock for SOLID doors.

This Brinks deadbolt lock is ANSI Grade 2 rated: not usually sufficient for many commercial buildings, but they exceed the building requirements for residential buildings; must handle 400,000 cycles, 4 door strikes and a 250-pound weight test; must handle 150,000 cycles and a 5-door-strike hammer test. Grade 1 is higher and grade 3 is lower rated. This lock can accommodate 2-3/8” (residential) and 2-3/4” (commercial) backsets. The backset is the distance between the door edge and the spindle (usually the center of the doorknob). The lock also accommodates doors between 1-3/8” to 1-3/4” thick. In other words, measure your door, especially if the door is predrilled for a deadbolt. The package includes a template to facilitate positioning the lock. All necessary mounting hardware and two keys are provided. Beware: this deadbolt is keyed on the exterior side only; the interior side has a thumb turn (lever). For a solid door with no sidelights, this lock is fine. However, for maximum security, do not use with glass doors or doors with sidelights since one can readily reach the thumb turn by breaking the glass. Some people object to an exterior and interior keyed deadbolt, arguing that it prevents quick exit, e.g., in case of a fire. That issue is readily managed by hanging a key by the door out of reach through the broken glass. Another thing I like about key-only deadbolts is that they impede burglars from readily carrying my stuff out the door. They will also hinder said burglars from escaping my 4006 or 870 wraths should a firefight ensue. So, a highly rated (ANSI), good, sturdy lock most suited for solid doors.
