I’m torn

On the one hand, it doesn’t have nearly the flow of my Fluval FX4 9or of my old Eheim 3), and this filter is a royal pain to prime. On the other hand, Eheims are so finely crafted that you only need to clean it once or twice a year. It’s getting the job done and that’s more than half the battle.

Quiet, reliable, easy to use

I've been using the Eheim Pro 4+ 600 for about a year now on my 125 gallon tank. This filter works in conjunction with a fluval fx6. The Eheim 4+ serves as the primary bio filtration unit. With the included media, you get a good starter pack of material and only need to add new material later down the road. The only issue one might find with this unit is the included hose. I needed to order more eheim hose to get both the inlet and outlet the right length. Fortunately i read the reviews and ordered it at the same time, which saved me a lot of delay. With the hose issue out of the way, this is a super easy canister to assemble and start. Once the media is rinsed, one simply puts it in the internal trays and fills the canister with water. Once the pump unit is secured, the hose fitting snaps on easily. A few pushes of the priming pump floods the remainder of the unit and it's ready to turn on. No need to manually prime and get aquarium water in my mouth. That's my one complaint with priming my eheim 1500xl (other tank). Maintenance is much easier than the fx6 because of how easy it is to remove the hose fitting. Just push a switch over and the water is held in the hoses until you're ready to reattach. The push button release works without having to fight with the pressure of the canister. For the first cleaning, I rinsed the blue sponge, tossed the floss media layer, and rinsed the stone and plastic bio material. After a year of operation, the 4+ still pushes water with the same steady flow. I highly recommend the separately purchased eheim pre filter to greatly reduce maintenance. I use them on both this unit and fx6. The tank size rating for the 4+ 600 is debatable in my opinion. With a few small to medium fish, you could possibly get away with just this unit alone on a 125-150 gallon aquarium. However, with a full community of medium sized fish, or a few large fish, I highly recommend another unit to help the 4+. It would take at least two 4+ 600 units to get the media volume of the eheim 1500XL (2262) I use on my 180 gallon. Even with two units the gph would still lag behind that beast of a canister. However, the 4+ 600 is hard to beat at half the price or less. The water gets good contact time with the media. When combined with the fx6, they make a very efficient pairing of bio and mechanical focused filtration.

Nice filter that’s absurdly quiet.

I really like this filter. I’m using it on a 75gallon S.A. Cichlid tank along with a 110 tidal hang on back filter. It may not be an ideal flow pattern, but I like that the mechanical foam filtration is on the top of the basket, it makes cleaning a breeze, not having to soak my whole counter pulling all the trays out every time I clean it. I generally do that every 4th or 5th time that I clean the filter, and also replace the filter floss at the same point. I would recommend handling the baskets with care, the fit together well, but due to the way the water flows between then, you need to make sure your aligning them properly or you could bend the tabs that make up the flow tube. Filter has tons of power, and is way over filtered on my setup, but the pair of filters help keep things clean from the massive duces my oscars and jack dempseys leave. I would recommend buying the pre filter to go along with this filter. It attaches to the filters intake inside the tank, and will drastically cut down on the amount of debris that passes through your biological media, and will leave the water crystal clear. This is my first canister, so I have no other units to compare against. But I would recommend it. It’s also whisper quiet, I can’t hear it running at all, and my air pump and hang on back are probably 3-4x louder. If i was purchasing filtration for a similar tank again, I would buy two of this filter, rather then a hang on back as my 2nd filter.

Less Than Honest Marketing

Potential buyers need to be aware that this is in fact a step down from the Pro 3 series professional filters. I find it annoying Eheim as well as some on-line reviewers are marketing this as the next evolution of their professional line. It's not. What it is IMO is a response to the need to have some canister filters that are more reasonably priced. Eheim is without a doubt the Cadillac of filters, but even Cadillac has to concerned about market share. When you have the Fluval FX6 as a valid competitor (just one example) selling for about $200 less and it includes the filter media that simply makes you not competitive for many people. That being said, I recently purchased the Professional 3 600T and now have added on a Pro 4 600 filter as I needed still more filtration for my overstocked African Cichlid tank. The manufacturer and other reviewers have positioned the Pro 4 as the new and improved version of the Pro 3 line. In reality the Pro 4 is about 2/3 the size of the comparable Pro 3. The Pro 4 line filters significantly less per hour compared to the Pro 3's. There are no real screw connectors with the Pro 4. The spray bar is all in one piece with the Pro 4 so you cannot vary the direction of the output. There is only one input tube with the Pro 4. The length of hose included with the Pro 4 is very short. All of this is not to say I am not pleased with both filters. I am. But be aware there are differences. Both are still made in Germany and are high quality, but buyers need to be aware of the reason for the lower price. It should be interesting to see if they discontinue the Pro 3 line.

Very quiet

This is not fun to prime it. Its the hardest filter ive ever had to prime. I thought once i got the first prime out of the way then i would never have to do it again lol yah no every time you break it apart. This is a different setup then im use to . It cleans its quite and its easy to clean but a bear to prime. Kills your fingers.

I wasnt an Eheim fan until now

I always had Fluval filters in my aquariums. This being said, I recently installed a 120g in my bedroom paired with a FX4 and that thing was so noisy I couldnt sleep. I choose to give Eheim a try and bought 2 of those, Im fully satisfied. 2 Eheim Pro 4+ running together are less noisy that the previous filter! Im also satisfied with the power of it and the capacity. I highly recommend it!!

It's not bad, but it's not the best if you hold high standards of quality.

I bought this filter to replace my fluval FX6 because it's a little noisy. I decided to return it after seeing the quality of the materials this filter is built with. To give an idea, an FX6 would be comparing a Mercedes Benz with a GM car. A GM is not bad, but Mercedes has standards in quality. The main reason I returned this filter was that I was afraid that during maintenance the media baskets would break, they fell really wobbly. I've owned an FX6 for the last 6 years and this thing is rock solid. I maintain it once a year and after every maintenance it looks and feels brand-new.

Wrong Voltage and Broken Pieces

Buyers Beware! I ordered this through Amazon AU - but they sent me a unit only capable of running 120V 60Hz (while our mains 230V at 50Hz). My only solution was to buy a $50 step-down transformer from an electrical shop locally. I still don't know how long it will last. Additionally, as the photos show, bits were broken off. The larger bit is mostly cosmetic, but the smaller bit was part of the pump cover lock. This means I now need to find and buy a replacement part for my "new" unit. Very much regret not buying locally; the price premium is worth not dealing with ridiculous products.

Untrustworthy price

These are listed for $299 which is incredible because my lfs is competitive and cannot offer that price. I ordered one which arrived 4 days late. I set it up and there is an area that looks like a dried puddle. There is a broken loose piece rattling inside the top motor area which rattles when running, or off and just shaken. I return it and order a new one because of the price. This second one has the same broken piece rattling around inside, and I can not get the unit to fully prime. Returned. Little details are scuffed or bent which I have not encountered with eheim before, their units are usually perfect. I am familiar with these filters and know this should not be the case. I wonder if the price point is because they bought these cheaper as refurbished or imperfect units. High rating for eheim because eheim is amazing, moderate rating for this company simply because I can return these without issues.
