It's Not Clay or Ceramic But Works

So if you think you're going to fool anyone into thinking this is some higher-end Italian clay pot, or even a nice Mexican one from Home Depot, forget it. But it is a well-made alternative and I would buy it again. The color is great for fitting into a landscaped patio and the weight is great for moving if needed. It will be covered by a large fern in a year so not worried that it clashes with much more pricey pots on my patio. It was the perfect pot at a good price for my needs.

How does it drain and still self-water?

Maybe someone can straighten me out. Please. There looks to be pre-cut holes on the bottom, which I could pop out for drainage, but then the "self-watering" water would drain out along with the rain. The only solution I can imagine is to drill a hole an inch or so under the disk that holds the soil mix. But there are no such marks or directions, so I'm wondering if this is mutilating my new pot somehow. I have looked to see if Fiskars planters have a website that might address my concerns, but no such thing. Another confusion I have is, How do you adjust the water level, how do you know where it is? I mean, you need water wicking to the roots, but also air circulation down there, no? Drilling my hole solves this, too, but somehow I feel others are making this planter work without redesigning it. Am I missing something? I'm going to drill this one so I can plant, but I might order another one or two if I understood the design better. Other than my two sort of major complaints, it's a good buy for such a large substantial pot. Ok, if the hole drilling works, I might buy another one anyway. If it doesn't work for some reason, then there is no using it outside where rain will have so way out. Inside, I wouldn't know how to water it carefully enough not to rot the roots. Others? Those who have it and like it, am I over-thinking this?

Love this pot

I planted a beautiful hydrangea in it. It made it thru the summer and fall. I've never been able to raise hydrangeas in my garden. But I can keep this watered well. So happy with this pot. I ordered another one.

Good planter for the money

Wonderful planter; however, I needed to modify it slightly to be truly subirrigated. I added a fill tube so that I did not have to top water the soil and I put a small hole in the side just above the aeration screen (used a piece of air line tubing to keep the hole open) to get rid of the excess water.

Some obvious flaws

This planter was poorly painted. There were two obvious white unpainted spots near the top. There were also two other obvious area on the bottom rim of the pot that weren’t painted. The bottom of the pot had a melted rough patch of plastic that was sharp and unsightly. None of these would actually affect the function of the pot but when you buy something like this it should be of higher quality. This looks like it was a “second” but wasn’t sold as a second. It was disappointing.

Totally happy but will be great if thes added something to prevent that the soil will not be washed out. I bought the cheapest screen to prevent this and works very well

Large and economical

I couldn't find a reasonably priced planter locally for my large ficus plant. This one is great and looks good. It takes a lot of soil to fill it, but the plant seems to like the expanded space and the self watering disk and is responding well.
