very versatile
I own an early 1970's backhoe tractor and also an old 80's 4X4...and run a small welding shop w/ various older machines. I have yet to find a snap ring that this tool cannot remove or install, no matter if it is an inner ring OR an outer ring! With so many tips, w/ various angles, to choose from,...plus the way the tool ingeniously inverts to do either inner or outer rings...it is all I need to keep on hand. No need for a "Complete Set" of snap ring pliers anymore. I do agree w/ other reviewers that there are SO many tips included, that they are hard to keep track of them all in their tiny plastic case...but what the heck? So I just need to be a little more diligent about not losing them, and I need to come up w/ a clever way to keep track of them...it is still SO worth the money! Just a quick note...take advantage of the small allen-head screws near the tips of the snap-ring plier's jaws...loosening these small screws enables a deeper and stronger mounting of the individual tips. I didn't, and I still never experienced any trouble thru several different projects ... until I had to do a tough rusty outer ring [1-1/2" or so dia.]. While applying mucho pressure to the plier, one tip shifted within the plier jaw and chipped a piece from the jaw, causing the tip to fall out. I thought all was lost and now I would need to go rent, or buy a new set of pliers to finish the job. It was only out of desperation that I happened to notice these small allen-head screws!! For all my projects, I had only been using the tips half-installed!! I loosened the screws,[w/ the included allen wrench I had ALSO overlooked!], and the tip now sat so deeply into the jaw of the plier that the chipped jaw no longer mattered. They easily finished that job, and I have since done several as-tough jobs and haven't had any trouble whatsoever, even from the chipped jaw. Yet another case of 'Operator Error'! READ DIRECTIONS!!

Don't waste your time with these.
I am typically happy with Lisle tools, but this one is a hard pass. The plates that hold the tips in are so poorly machined, the tips do not fit correctly to line up. When you try to remove a snap ring with the 90 degree tips they just turn. The Int/Ext change is easy and works, it is a bit awkward on external rings. Even at the low price I would buy something else.

Almost.
Works well on smaller snap rings, but they twist on larger ones.

Not sure where the bad reviews for this come from
Its a reasonably priced, well made, made in the USA tool. Not sure where the bad reviews for this come from. Some guy gave it a bad review because it didn't work for what he needed and he had to modify it. He may have ground it so thin it lost its strength. I don't know. I'm holding the tool in my hand after multiple uses and its in great shape, and the jaws line up well. For many applications, it will work out of the box, for specialty applications you may have to modify it or pay hundreds of dollars for some manufacturers specialty tool. Jaws open to approximately 1 inch. Closed is approximately 1/8". The tip is 1/4-5/16 wide. There is a little tang on the end which works nicely. The tip also has a waffle pattern on the tips which allows the rings to grip into. What I like about it. Price point. Which was under $15 shipped with prime. No hard feelings if I break it, or have to modify it. The waffle tip is great for rusty rings stuck on Toyota 4x4 axles. I used this tool to pull about 20 at the junkyard in one afternoon. They were rusty and stuck on in the rust belt. If I wear one side out, I can flip it and use the other. Made in the USA is nice, I thought I was buying something Chinese.

They work
Had to file the tip down a litter due to being a tad to big. Other than that they work great for pulling transmission parts out or putting back in

Pliers are sturdy.
These lock ring pliers seem sturdy enough to handle any of the rings in my Muncie 4 speed transmission. I have not disassembled the transmission yet but have tested it on one of the snap rings on the main shaft. I will not have any issues with the rest of the snap rings with this tool. The knurling on the plier tips are very pronounced which will help keep the snap ring ends firmly in place. I would recommend this tool for anyone rebuilding manual transmissions.
