Not what I expected but servicable
These are just some things I looked for when I was brace shopping. Lots of unanswered questions before I just took the plunge and ordered this McDavid 195. I broke my ankle 3/27 and have been in a Frankenstein boot since then. The doc said to order a brace for PT which starts next week, but I will stay in the boot for at least another month. The doc recommended several brands of brace, and this was one of them. I contacted McDavid directly because the sizing chart was SO confusing. Going by the sizing chart, my shoe size (8 women's) showed I would wear a small. Going by ankle circumference (measured as directed, 9.5"-10" with sock) showed I should wear a large. I'm 5' 7" and average weight, and my foot is ultra narrow (3" wide) and spindly, so a large seemed ridiculous. Tip: MEASURE WITH A SOCK ON if you plan to put a sock under the brace. Recommendation: Wear the sock under it! After contacting McDavid, they said to order by ankle circumference, not shoe size. Now I know why. The band that goes around the leg (where you measure) to secure the laces and straps is super short and *tight*!! If you don't mind tight, then it's great. If you'll be hopping all around playing some fast sport, then you'll need it to be tight, which it is. I, however, can't handle things too tight. After I went through several sock thicknesses, I found one that I can tolerate wearing under the tight band if I barely do it up. It seems well constructed though, and seems to be of good quality. Con: I thought I was ordering a brace with stiff steel stays in the sides. There are none. If there are "stays" of any kind, I can't find them. The side support appears to come directly from the nylon and the Velcro figure 8 strapping. However, it does seem to keep my ankle fairly stable after a test fit hobble around the room. If I open my ankle-high hiking boot really wide, I can get my foot in there and still tie it up. Not sure how it will perform on the trail, but that's a few months away still. I'll keep it and give it a try. I fully expected to have to return this brace. I asked McDavid directly about the return policy and they said it was based on "wear and tear" as opposed to "time limited since purchase." If you need to return it and have trouble, contact them directly. Don't go through Amazon. Hope this helps you decide which one of the zillions of braces to buy.

Supportive but difficult to put on.
It is supportive and stabilizes your ankle well. Leave extra time to put it on. I had to loosen the laces a lot to get it on then you have to completely retighten them. I replaced this with one that was easier to put on.

Very supportive!
Our daughter enjoyed the first one so much, we had to get her another one! She wears them both playing basketball - gives her ankles the much needed support and they’re very comfortable.

Hard To Put On
As someone in their 60's with a fused lower back and a bit of a belly I found this extremely hard to put on. The tongue behind the laces is so tight I had to work at for 10 minutes of grunting to finally get it to slip on. A minor point; the laces had to be laced first after using a lighted magnifying glass to untie the tight knot. ???? It feels good once it's finally on though. If someone had someone to help them put it on once a day for the full day I think it could be really useful or if someone is young and more fit (of course) it would go easier. Perhaps I ordered the wrong size or the mild swelling in my foot and ankle needs to reduce before this will go on easier. For now I will put it off to the side then try it again once the swelling is gone. That kinda defeats the purpose though. I have a walking boot coming in a couple of days that might work better for the first 2-4 weeks then this one as a stabilizer after that. If I find it goes on easier later on I will come back and revise the review rating. I know the device works well for a lot of people. Perhaps I'm just too old and busted for this particular one. I want to give it a good review because it does give great support and stabilization once it's on. I think this is more for long term than short term stabilization. Update: I did find the brace easier to put on when wearing a sock so I added a star. It's a good brace and I'd buy it again but it isn't without needing a couple of minor improvements.

Best option we've found
I've purchased a number of these for my kids over the years. Wearing one on both ankles every day of basketball practice and games (as required by coach), my daughter never had an ankle problem in 4 years of HS basketball. Only complaint is that the pull-up straps tend to wear out more quickly than we'd like. Sizing matters: My son is now a size 11 shoe and was wearing a Medium - he didn't like wearing it b/c it was uncomfortable...and sure enough, he sprained his ankle again. We moved up to a Large and he reports it's much more comfortable. He still feels he's not as quick or explosive wearing it, so after a few weeks of healing and assuming no re-injury he/we will "downsize" to a smaller Level 1 or 2 brace for the remainder of the season and maybe for the rest of his career. He likes this better than the lace-up only version, which is heavier, and this is better than the Phantom version which comes in a more general M/L size and didn't fit as well (also was more expensive).

Best brace I've ever tried
As someone who's unfortunately has had far too many ankle injuries this is by far the best brace I've used. Previous ankle braces were very uncomfortable, rub or pinch too much or simply didn't even fit into a shoe. This one checks all the boxes. It's well-designed for comfort and fit and was able to reasonably get into a regular fit shoe. Found it to be much more stable than any other braces I tried and definitely the most comfortable of the lace-up or strap-based braces. The only challenge is because it's such a snug (by design) but comfortable fit it can be a bit of a challenge to put in and take off after the laces are added. The tongue is also a bit awkward to line up (only reason for 4 vs 5 star Comfort rating) ... but once you have everything on this brace is simply awesome! It's helped tremendously with a recent injury and got me back into action sooner than expected. Great overall product, highly recommend.

Great Product
I bought this because I broke my ankle and needed extra support for when I returned to work. I love it and currently use it every day.

the large size fits perfectly and comfortably in my high cut Nike basketball shoes ( which ...
Ordered this product in medium because of some of the reviews I read ... I wear a 10.5-11size shoe so I was boarder line between the 2 sizes .... medium was way to tight and slightly squeezed my foot before even tightening the brace.... because of this the brace offered no support to my ankle.... called customer service amazon Canada and they sent me a return label so I ordered a large.... the large size fits perfectly and comfortably in my high cut Nike basketball shoes ( which I was a little worried about) ... I have now used the brace 3 different times and can honestly say the brace does give my ankle the support I need to play basketball and not worry about rolling my ankle again... product also looking really cool with my red n black shoes .... so 2 thumbs up for those reviews that complain about the brace not offering enough support or is to complicated to put on... I honestly don't know what your complaining about .... learn to be proactive .... there are videos on youtube that show you how to put the brace on (which is really simple) .... when I play basketball I push my body (ankles) to the limits if this brace doesn't offer enough support to you then maybe you should consider rehabbing (physiotherapy) your body (ankles) before you continue playing sports because clearly more then a ankle brace is needed... goodluck everyone and happy healthy ankles thanks Jay

Product is great BUT manufacturer sizing is incorrect
Manufacturer recommendation is medium for shoe size 9. Initially we bought a medium for shoe size 9 and it was too tight and could not be used. Subsequently we bought a large size which fit well and works well. Maybe if you have narrow feet, the manufacturer recommendation may be right. However if you have broad feet, then you may need to buy the next size. The product is non returnable.

Solid, straightforward, size down
Originally got an XL as that is what’s recommended in the sizing chart. I’m flat footed and a size 12, so I figured it must be accurate. XL turned out to be way too big. If your laces aren’t tightening the ankle brace enough or the Velcro is extending past the top of the brace, size down. You’ll be much happier. Getting the sizing right may be difficult but it is a great product when you find one that fits. For me that meant sizing down.

Just what I needed!
Recovering from an ankle fracture, I had been wearing an Aircast stirrup brace. It worked fine but was not comfortable enough for ongoing protection. This McDavid brace is perfect. I can wear it around the house and in my hikers when out walking. It definitely gives good support without being too bulky. At first it seemed like a major hassle to put on and remove, but after a few times I figured out to really loosen the laces midway so it slips on and off easily. I wear size 10.5 shoes and thanks to other reviews ordered the large size which is as snug as I would want, so go larger if you are not sure. The super long lace does slide out of center and become a pain to re-lace evenly. This was easily solved with a tip from another reviewer after simply sewing a white thread midway on the lace. Overall I am very happy with this purchase. It is exactly what I wanted and I am planning on buying another so that both of my ankles are better protected when I can get out hiking again.

Altamente recomendable
