Glad to find a Schlage that fits my deck door!
I have been replacing all of my bright brass with satin nickel Schlage but the Schlage deadbolt wouldn't fit here no matter how I finagled it so I had to put the old pitted weathered Kwikset back on and find a deadbolt that matched the look of the one I was trying to replace. I found the Dexter and liked that it's made by Schlage so ordered it. I didn't realize I bought it in satin stainless but it looks the same as the satin nickel and it fits the door perfectly. I bought the matching knob too. Both look great! Just wish I could have gotten both with the same key, but didn't want to take them to a locksmith to key them the same. It's for a deck door, so no problem having 2 keys, one for the deadbolt and one for the doorknob. Happy with my purchase.

You get what you pay for
It feels funny to be reviewing a home security item. I feel like someone is going to dox me and say, "Oh, he bought a cheap lock, let's go burglarize his house." But here we go anyway. I bought this to replace a Schlage deadbolt that was getting finicky and hard to open. This gave me an opportunity to compare quality between the Dexter and Schlage brands. Folks, if you think you're getting Schlage quality for Dexter prices, think again. This lock is thinner, lighter, and flimsier than its Schlage counterpart in every respect. You get what you pay for. I would not use this on a vulnerable exterior door; I'd go for something better. But for the place I'm using it (connecting door to a garage where a pit bull lives), it's good enough. Also: if you look at the photos in various finishes, you will see that not all of them are of the same design. I ordered Satin Stainless finish, which is what I received, but the design was that shown in the Brass photo - stamped steel bolt plate, "Dexter by Schlage" imprinted on the lock face. On the plus side, it installed easily, and I was able to rekey it to match my other locks using a rekeying kit meant for Schlage.

very slightly larger than old Dexter deadbolt locks
As far as functioning like a deadbolt, these do their job perfectly! They're attractive, have a smooth locking mechanism, and somewhat easy to install. I deducted one star because you should know the barrel is very very slightly larger than older models of Dexter locks. You may find yourself needing to also purchase a wood file, if you're hoping to replace existing Dexter locks. Once I had a wood file it was easy enough to file the opening in my door a bit to accommodate the microscopic size difference, but it definitely was a surprise when I was hoping for a smooth replacement by a same-brand deadbolt.

Good Value
I bought two of these deadbolts and both of them installed easily and work well, however the main reason I bought them was for their rekeying ability. The Schlage rekeying set that I bought at the same time said that it worked on Dexters as well. When I tried to remove the cylinder cap I found it was crimped on instead of screwed on (the rekeying manual said it would be screwed on)(Oh and yes I checked the part numbers on the locks and the rekeying manual to make sure they were the right directions). I did not want to have to send these locks back, and I needed them rekeyed so I gently pried the cap off striving for as little damage as possible, rekeyed the lock, and recrimped the cylinder cap as best I could. It doesn't look pretty, however that part is not visible and the locks have been working fine. To sum up the Dexter deadbolt is a good value, but if your expecting to rekey it then you will be disappointed since this lock is no longer easily (I would even say no longer designed to be) rekeyed.

Works, but disappointing
I'm familiar with Schlage and older Dexter locks, this is not up to either of those standards in either materials, workmanship or pick resistance. in fact it's one of the easiest locks I've ever picked. The door I bought it for is rarely used so durability isn't likely a problem here, and I added security pins to increase the pick resistance...but I wouldn't recommend it for a high-use door or exposed to weather.

Perfect Match with Nickle door knob set
Couldn't get a nickle dead-bolt single at the local hardware store, this fit the bill. Matches a knob set we put on a couple years ago just fine... not sure if I am bold enough to have it re-keyed to match - the hardware store owner seemed annoyed (????? why I'm not sure) that I was more concerned about matching the appearance then buying it from him. (duh) Had bought a used metal clad door with lead glass insert - already had two holes, needed to put a lock in to fill that second hole and make use of that door. What a deal, a $350 door for a total cost of $42 for both the lock and door. ;-)

If you can use a screw driver you can install these easily and quickly
I have purchased about 8 of these dead bolt Dexter by Schlage and as well as being heavy for the size they take under 10 minutes for a replacement. Included in the package are replacement screws as well as the strike plate for the door jamb. This is a well made product and obviously I have purchased enough of them to write a review as to their ease of use and installation. If you can use a screw driver you can install these easily and quickly. There are directions but just work backwards. Remove the screws from the old one and replace with the new dead bolt. Great product from Schlage via AMAZON.

Dead Bolts are best
This dead bolt is easy to install in an existing door knob hole. Read the instructions and notice the twist the pieces have to be in and it will install in 5 seconds. If you have the "innards" twisted the wrong way, it will NEVER install. Trust me. Precision install. A contractor can install it blindfolded. An old man like me has to read the printed instructions carefully. Anyway, a cinch to install using the old knob that comes out easy. I used this on the closet where I store my medicine to keep little ones out.
