Nice little Dutch oven.

Good little Dutch oven if you’re cooking for one or two. Of course it depends on what you’re cooking. I love the glass lid. I like being able to see what’s going on without losing heat.

I just love by Staub cast iron Cocotte

The cherry red color Is very pretty and the pot does a good job of retaining heat. The 4 quart is the perfect size for many things that I make. The glass top is what really sets it apart, great for resting a spoon on or keeping some things warm and it just looks cool. No wonder the name Staub has been around such a long time.

Excellent value, almost perfect design

Good quality cookware is my weakness, and I have an extensive collection from a number of well known brands. I wanted to try a Staub Coccote, having already experienced the quality through owning a Staub Chistera, but I could never justify the price given I already owned a number of cast iron casseroles by the other French brand. When I saw the amazing price of this Coccote on Amazon however, I had to have it, and I wasn't disappointed. The Coccote arrived well packaged with no damage. I chose the glass lid both for price reasons and because I didn't own a similar model already. The cast iron base seems well made with no imperfections in the glaze that I could see. The textured black interior was flawless, and the sear I managed on my beef joint was far superior to that of the smooth cream interior of my other cast iron casserole. Staub seem to have hit upon the perfect design for their interiors. I have seen some complaints that the dark interior makes it difficult to judge browning, but I didn't experience this - perhaps in a dark kitchen, but in normal daylight conditions I found it no trouble. My only disappointment was the lid. I love the glass lid, in my opinion it actually looks better than the cast iron lid, but it has a strange design flaw which lets it down. Around the rim of the lid are small bumps which cause it to sit slightly proud of the casserole. These are obviously intentional as they don't look like manufacturing faults, they appear to be by design. Because of this, the lid doesn't seal as well as the cast iron lid, and so allows moisture to escape. While this isn't a huge problem for the roast been I made, there is enough of a gap that I could see it affecting crusty bread etc. However this was the only fault I could find, if it wasn't for this it would be the perfect cooking vessel.

Quality control issues

When you get a good example of this casserole dish, the quality shines through and it is really a delight to use. However, I received three poorly finished examples before a fourth was problem free, so quality control at the factory is not great. The problems I had were all to do with the exterior glazed finish and bits missing that impact on how it looks and, perhaps over time, performs and lasts. I certainly wasn’t happy about the finish given the outlay required. Note that, although the listing refers to this as a 4 quart size, it is a 24cm casserole dish, so compare the two because they are the same item just listed separately and with different rrps. My perfectly finished casserole dish performs well in the oven and cleans up like new. I am hand washing, which I always hate to do, but the casserole dish deserves careful handling. It comes in a heavy duty box for gifting purposes.
