Great for koi ponds but start early before algae get a head start. Bill

Works well for the experienced user
I've used this product for the last 25 years. You cannot rely on it alone to clear algae in your pond it must be used responsibly. Be very careful with this product when water temperatures drop below 50° in particular with large koi. It should be used as a supplement to your filter system not the filter system. If you have a substantial filter system operating in your pond and still have an algae problem with sparing use of this product then check the chemistry of your fish food. The cheaper the food the higher the phosphates. There are organic and man-made phosphates they require different methods of testing for each. Swimming pool test equipment will not help you with Organic phosphates. There's nothing organic in a swimming pool but Trace oils coming from your body. Hopefully you're not discharging waste in your swimming pool like fish are in your pond.

This DOES remove ALGEA without affecting the wildlife - I'm very impressed.
This stuff is fantastic. I have a 7,000 gallon koi pond with 22 koi ranging from 12" to 30" in length. Average is 20". I'm a heavy feeder, I also feed twice per day. The pond is in full sunlight and circulates 8,000 gallons per hour via a 100' long 3' wide river with a 3' wide waterfall. What does all that mean. It means the water get's plenty of oxygen and sunlight and therefore grows green algae by the ton! The normal water color for the past 7 years has been pea green! I have lots of filtration, a huge UV filter and I've used hundreds of dollars of good bacteria. NOTHING kept the algae out for the past 7 years. ----> this year I decided to try a chemical to clear the water or get rid of the pond. I read everything I could find and decided this was the best chemical “experiment”: " poly oxyethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene dichloride ". This chemical is packaged under several different names and a concentrated version can be purchased at swimming pool suppliers. (concentrated is 20%, much thicker, more like syrup) The chemical kills algae AND causes it to clump and float to the surface as foam. It will clog your pond filter in a blink because of the clumped foam dead algae. Be prepared to clean the filter often. The chemical is "consumed" as it kills algae and my water was so green I added 7 times the dosage over a period of 3 weeks. The color tuned from pea green to a gray green slowly. I had to clean the filter every couple of days for about a month. ===>>> the water is now crystal clear. I now add about 3 ounces every 2 weeks and the water stays crystal clear. Every time I add there's a little foam on the surface, the filter clogs up within 48 hours, I clean it about 60%, not 100%, and I'm good for another 2 weeks. I'm very pleased with the results, ===>> How did the fish and plants do? It never phased them one bit. Not one bit. They didn't come up gulping for oxygen, it didn't faze any of the many frogs or billions of snails that inhabit the river, NONE of the lilies or water lettuce or other plants were affected in any way. I don’t have any experience with other fish other than koi. This is the chemical, sold under several different names: " poly oxyethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene dichloride " The dosage will vary by vendor depending on the concentration. The 3oz per 7000 gallons every two weeks I use is a 20% concentration I purchased at a swimming pool supply store sold under a different brand name. I have tried three different brands of this chemical (including this one) and they all work exactly the same. The only difference is the dosage which varies based on the concentration, ranging from 4% to 20%. Attached, 2 pictures, before and 45 days later, after.

Packaging is the WORST
I have a subscription for this product. Just want to remind vendor to package well their shipments. The cap was cracked with the last TWO deliveries, but because the container is sealed, the liquid did not spill out. I will recycle the old cap from empty container I just finished. Overall, I have no complaints about the product itself. I have a lined pond and this works great! I plan to change vendors and get the 2 gallon container.

Excellent product but limited shelf life once opened
Experienced water gardener here with 6000 gallon koi pond, but always learning something new. A few years back I had a green water problem and used API Pond Algaefix, at the time the most highly recommended by on-line purchasers. It worked immediately and remedied my water clarity problem. Fast forward to this summer and, for the first time in years, I had a green water problem again. I tried using Algaefix again, but with no success whatsoever this time. Thanks to Amazon's previous order search capability, I found that my previous purchase of this product was in 2016. Duh! Acting on a hunch, I bought a fresh bottle and -- bingo -- my green water cleared up overnight. Bottom line: this is a great product and works very well when used exactly as advertised, but be advised that it apparently has a limited shelf life and loses its efficacy once it has been opened. This is not mentioned anywhere in the product literature, nor have I found this necessary information anywhere on-line. Live and learn.

Effective but Caution Warranted
Algaefix is a “polyquat” algaecide. I have used it for years and it is effective but in my opinion you need to be even more careful with it than the directions imply. I know the volume of my koi pond and I always add chemicals premixed with water and right by the pump so they get diluted right away. By trial and error I have become convince that when used at the recommended dose, the Koi are negatively affected by Algaefix. I’ve never lost one but after adding recommended full dose of Algaefix the koi almost immediately become listless and seem to be struggling for oxygen at surface of the pond. This lasts 18-36 hours. So I have taken to using only half the recommended dose and with that the koi do not seem to be impacted by the Algaefix, even when dosed every 3 days. So I would recommend NEVER using a full dose, perhaps 2/3rds of a dose would be fine but I stick to 1/2 the recommended dose. Also, DON’T use if you don’t know the volume of water you will be treating - don’t guess. I also use a UV clarifier and barley straw concentrate and this combo works. There is still some algae on rocks for Koi to feast on, but the pond looks good and the water is clear.

Works, keep to the schedule
I had super bad string algae and by following the instructions, it cleared up after the 4th dosing. This was great because I mean I had it REALLY bad. I will now keep this stuff on hand at all times. I had used it years ago and wasn't happy but tried again (I tried a lot of things) but this worked. I think I initially failed because I only did one does. If your situation isn't bad, one dose may work. Make sure to keep air stones going in hot conditions!
