Good roof cap for the money.
I replaced a old rusting roof cap with the Broan-NuTone 634 Steel Roof Cap. The existing duct work was 3-1/4x 10" and this roof cap fit right over the existing duct work with no modification making for a straight forward replacement. Special care was needed to ensure the internal bug screen and vent flap assembly were installed correctly as these can easily move out of place during shipment and handling during installation. With everything in its proper place, the roof cap works reliably and looks great.

Good
Lots of work.

Good but should have an angle at the top to direct water around it.
Good but should have an angle at the top to direct water around it. Use lots of flashing around it to avoid leaks.

Right for the job
This fits perfectly and has all the appropriate pieces to keep the air going in right direction and prevents any animals from getting inside of the vent.

Good Product
I finished installing this on our roof. I installed it to vent the kitchen hood and it works great. Our old vent cap did not have a flap and when our furnace to our home would turn on i could feel the cold air coming in thru the kitchen hood and the heater would turn on like 4 times in 1hour. Once i installed this Product it stopped the cold air from coming in and now the furnace turns on 2x in the hour. So basically it's paying for itself by using less gas to heat my home.

I hated installing it
It gets the kitchen odors out of the house! Other than that, there isn't much to say. I hated installing it. Very flimsy metal and sharp corners for the flange part. Cutting into the shingles of your once perfectly water tight roof is always a big pucker moment! Liberal use of a good roofing sealant and a few nails later and the job is thankfully over. The bird screen is just some metal mesh that is sort of wedged up in there. You would think they could devise some better way of mounting the mesh than "eh, just jam it up in there"... But it keeps the birds out. And if you build homes for a living, please do the world a favor and just add an outdoor vent like this for the range hood!!! Just do it! even if it's one of those silly microwave above the range deals, just run the duct and this vent anyway! even if it's a wall vent. Recirculating vents do not work and no one wants their house full of cooking odors. Seriously. It should just be code.

High Capacity Roof Jack
This roof jack is high capacity suitable for high airflow kitchen hoods. I installed it for a Vent-A-Hood dual blower kitchen hood, and it is large enough to handle the 600 CFM airflow. The quality is good, sheet metal with baked enamel finish. As opposed to plastic roof jacks, roofing cement can be used in direct contact with this product. The installation instructions are adequate. This was my first experience with roof shingled openings, and installation was relative intuitive. The birdscreen is removable for access to the backdraft damper, which is also removable for replacing the gaskets. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it lacks an adapter for the inlet ductwork. The inlet on the underside is simply a large opening of size approximately 10.5" x 11". I added a flat sheet metal adapter with an 8" diameter hole, which I fastened to the underside of the roof cap with sheet metal screws at the four corners of the opening (inside of its weather cap). I crimped and inserted the 8" dia duct from the hood into this adapter from the underside of the roof.

Good vent, decent construction with a few downfalls
Great vent for my application. I needed an 8” vent for a range hood. First con, This states it fits 8” but is completely open on the back so I had to make an adaptor to fit. The second downfall is that the flap inside is relatively flimsy and falls out easily. I fixed this by adding a few springs to put pressure when it closes. Overall the body looks great on the house and I’m sure it will last a while

I find it a bit noisy when it rains
I installed it for an 8" round pipe. I found it an odd fitment. You basically bring the pipe to it, but there's no connection to the pipe. The other issue I have is the noise level when it rains. A rubber coating would probably be better than thin metal as it is. Very loud when the rain is heavy.
