A great thing to use for your young ones.

The media could not be loaded. I bought this for my preschooler who’s working on math, all year with me outside of just school, for a different option. I will say it starts out very basic. Counting, how many are there? And then it has VERY basic adding and subtracting. So for my five year old, it’s not too much of a challenge because having an older brother who’s great at math, he’s picked up a lot of those same skills. So it’s very basic. But that’s perfect for others of that age and level. Myself I would have thrived in kindergarten working with these. Math has never been easy for me. So it’s a nice slow go at your own pace to learn. As a kid we had whatever the original hot dots were. I had a little black pen your put on the black square and you’d find out if you read the right word, did the right math problem. And those series started at preschool and went up to like fifth grade. I still have some that my youngest uses with his hot dot pens. And it works great still. This is on a similar level. The pages are a thick coated plastic paper? However you’d describe it. But it gets scratched if left on the floor or moved wrong. So I don’t know if that’s going to create an issue with the hot dot being able to read the dots over time. The binding or fairly sturdy. They’re not going just bend, you’d have to physically bend it to get that impact. I am glad I got this for my son. And have since gotten the kindergarten reader too. Which starts with just which is the lower or upper case of this letter? What letter does this object begin with. Which the last part is exactly like the one I had growing up. So it’s nice to see the consistencies in that learning progress. In the end it all just depends on your own kids learning levels. And be very aware where they fall because it’s all separate and it gets expensive keeping up with it. And you’ll end up with a million pens. Which is fine because one’s bound to have issues over time. Then you have a backup. It’s something I would say is a great aid in working with the kids at home to help keeps that consistency of what they’re learning at home. And get them ready for homework, but keeping it fun and enjoyable so they don’t feel like they’re having to do work. It also has reward stickers. But I don’t use them because I want to encourage my son to go back and keep doing pages. And a stick or star gives that idea it’s completed and you don’t have to do it again. And this isn’t a one time through book. You can do it as many times as you want because there’s no writing in it if you don’t want it to have it. That way you can use it as many times as you want on say addition because they’re struggling there. Then you can keep going to that section. So I do not use the stickers for that reason. But they do have it to show a mark of completion.

Good but......

The media could not be loaded. My kids absolutely love this book. I purchased it for my 6 yr old who Is in kindergarten. My 3 yr old wanted to take part too but doesn't really understand what she is doing. It breaks everything down in an easy to comprehend way and my 6 yr old nails the answers however the pens are useless. I purchased an extra one and both have the same glitch. They work for 5 minutes and then start marking everything incorrect which very confusing to kids and makes them doubt or question themselves. I had to tell him that the pen is wrong and he is correct. So you really cannot let them practice on their own. I have to monitor his answers and let him know if he is right or wrong.

Makes learning fun!

A little bit advanced for my 3yr old, but that was intentional on my part. He is absolutely loving it and he's learning above and beyond his preschool companions. To him, it's a game that we play together.

Worked for 10 minutes (Updated review)

My daughter was having a blast with this. She was actually having fun learning and I was so excited for her. That lasted for 10 minutes and then the pen started marking everything wrong. I've googled it to try to figure it out and all I've found is that this is what has happened to almost everyone who has got this. Some have lasted 2 weeks though. Someone asked the company directly on fb about it (in 2014, so this has been a problem for awhile) and their only solution was to wipe it with a kleenex...which doesn't work. Ridiculous that they've had this issue for a decade and haven't fixed it yet. *They sent a replacement super fast so hopefully this one lasts longer.

Bent scuffed pages

My boys (4&5) enjoy these books. They could be a little more durable tho. The pages were bent within a couple days.
