Eh
I had a different one last year that was called a De-icer but actually warmed my bucket water. It was getting beat up so I thought to replace with this one. This one only de-ices, if that.. It did not keep my bucket from being frozen. maybe it was defective because it really didn't throw off enough heat.

Would work fine in a more moderate climate
We had a cold blast when I first bought this 1000 Watt unit. I have a 75 gallon metal trough. As soon as the temp got down to 20F, ice started forming. Then we got to -6F and 3 inches of ice formed on the top. I ended up buying the 1500 Watt unit from the same manufacturer and not a bit of ice yet and it has been REALLY COLD.... -10F. So, I recommend this 1000W heater for places that don't get into the 20s or colder, but not frigid places like Colorado.

Keeps water from feezing
I bought this to place in a large plastic bin that I use to keep water for two miniature horses. It has performed well, and last winter was one of our coldest. We had several nights of -24 F. To cold for this area, but in any case it kept the water from freezing all the way. Some of it did freeze, but the water directly over it did not. This winter I hooked it up again, and it's working. Great value. Update: April 2014 Just put it up, and will use again next winter. Still working great.

Keeping a 30 gallon horse trough liquid
Bought this for my dad who had to go outside twice daily to break ice on his 30 gallon horse trough. He ran the cord through a piece of PVC pipe because he has a pony who likes to turn hoses into toys and he didn't want her nibbling the cord. The product sits on the bottom of the tank and the built in thermostat seems to be doing its job, the water isn't frozen or hot. This is in a cut open plastic barrel water trough, no melting as the heating element is suspended by a wire cage.

Get right wattage for application
Best to use higher wattage if there's a doubt. I use 1,000 watt de-icers in low and long 70-gallon stock tanks for my ducks. When the temps hit the mid-teens and the birds don't stir up the water, it will start to ice over. But these are otherwise reliable and effective.

Might be good for bigger tank or pond
Too big for a 50 gallon livestock tank. A lot of water steamed off and it drew so much electricity it flipped the outdoor breaker unless everything else was off

Best for cold weather
Kept our chickens watered thru a very harsh winter.
