Arborist approved!
My husband loves this! He's typically a brand snob and only buys stuff from tree catalogs or trade shows, but he really likes this! I can update this review with his input, but I just wanted to share that he uses it regularly with no issues. Totally worth it!

I cannot belive how much I love that thing!
Wow, ... I have been wanting something like that for so long! Kong just got all popular belay devices (ATC, Figure-8, Descenders, GriGri etc.), discarded all disadvantages of each, then got all advantages of each of the devices on a single list and then put them into the Hydrobot. INSANE! If you have worked in the mountains for a long time you will know what the disadvantages are. Some coil the rope, some are plain useless for serious work (ATC - I am looking at you). Some are so overcomplicated to give you what ... a glorified ATC ... GriGri anyone. Most do not allow you to stop while rapelling and go hands-free. The ones that do (Petzl Piranha is my choice, Yes ... it coils the rope) have the detach/attach moment or are too bulky (rescue descenders for example) or do not handle double ropes ... In addition I have seen tired minds and hands doing stupid things under stress ... very stupid things. Like ... where is your other crampon dude ... Oh ... I thought I put it on ... In moments like this simplicity = live to tell the story. So ... I got my Kong now - beautifully made in Italy ... I found on YouTube only one video in a language I did not understand ... regardless ... I just wanted to see if I was right in what I suspected the device can do ... halfway through the video I just switched tabs and bought it.

My Favorite by Far
I have been canyoneering / rappelling for a while and using atc/ kong gigi/ figure 8/ kong oka. I can say is nothing is as adjustable and easy to use as the hydrobot. I do not notice the weight like others have posted. You can adjust to go super fast like a SWAT team member in a movie or adjust to not move unless you add slack from the brake hand. I've taken it in water, sandy rappal or desert dry. It gives me as the user the viability I'm looking for. Also works well with one or two ropes. Doesn't matter. I have yet to use a 8mm rope on an over 100ft rappel. I usually use a 9.4mm rope with this device. I am probably going to buy a couple extra ones in the future in case it becomes discontinued. That is how much I love this device.

Great Functionality but Heavy
I love the way this device operates. I appreciate not having to mess around with a locking carabiner and adding friction is a piece of cake. My only complaint is that this thing is three times the weight of a Piranha. It seems to me there are plenty of extra bits of aluminum that could be eliminated in a future model. Due to the weight this will not be my primary device but since it is easy to load and operate it will be my loaner device for less experienced guests.

My favorite dual strand rappel device
Fast and elegant solution for dual strand rappels, and especially for water rappels (hence the Hyrdo in its name) no need to unscrew caribiners, simply flip the gate and release - do this in a cold pothole and you'll appreciate why this device is so unique - I never go into a canyon without it. Works well on single line as well but not as convenient to add friction as a Piranha or ATS so I would not recommend for single strand free hangs especially on 8mm rope.

Did 3 canyons in Zion National Park with it. ...
Did 3 canyons in Zion National Park with it. Definitely a little more work to get set up than your traditional ATC or Figure 8, but well worth the cost.

Simple to use and super quick to connect and disconnect while canyoneering
Simple to use and super quick to connect and disconnect while canyoneering. My buddy, who has all the latest and greatest stuff was very interested in the new 'easy to use device' I had.

Some upsides, many downsides
The main upside is of course the fact that you don't need to open your carabiner when you have abseiled down, however opening the gate is not always easy either! (and your rope should not be swimming in a water pool anyway). Adding friction is a nightmare, and without any added friction, the friction is just not enough. The carabiner hole at the bottom is way too big, so this thing is always bouncing around and falling. It is also rather heavy, so you notice that it bounces around on your harness. Having used many rappel devices in canyoning so far, I can't really recommend this, at least not for myself. I would much rather take a figure 8 device.
