Quality tool
No surprise professionals favor the Rigid brand of tools. I'm not a professional plumber, but needed a pipe threader I could count on for a rush job repairing some gas leaks in order to pass inspection by the utility company before resuming service to the house. My brother recently told me about his disappointment with a pipe threading die he got from a discount hardware company, so I didn't want to waste time and money repeating his experience. The die and wrench worked just fine, and were a LOT cheaper than hiring a plumber for this job. BTW, for those of you who, like myself, weren't already aware of it, you should use generous amounts of a cutting fluid specifically formulated for threading and tapping metal, not just lubricating oil. Rigid makes their own brand, but I mixed up a small batch, using a formula I found online. It worked ok, but I can't claim that it is as good as a manufactured formulation for maximizing ease of cutting, and die or tap service life. If I were a pro, and doing lots of these jobs I'd probably just pay the money and get the Rigid brand by the gallon.

Rigid means quality.
I recently purchased a Rigid manual Pipe threader tool along with 1/2” die after purchasing a much cheaper, off brand, manual pipe threading set with disappointing results and performance. I wish that I would have purchased Rigid pipe threading tools to begin with. You won’t be disappointed using any of Rigid’s Pipe Threading Tools in the long run. You can actually feel and see their quality when you use their pipe threading tools!

Its RIDGID, what else is there to say?
Bought this ratchet threader to cut some black iron pipe threads. In conjunction with a RIDGID die, it cuts nice clean standard NPT threads. These threads mate perfectly to black iron fittings, in other words they do not leak. (This is not the case for some threading kits I've used that were sourced from the far east. They leaked because they had an incorrect NPT taper, and were not adjustable. No amount of pipe dope helped.) As long as one uses a good pipe vice (or equivalent) and cutting oil, the effort to cut 1/2" pipe threads is quite reasonable. I used an original RIDGID 1/2" die that my grandfather used to cut threads, (more than 60 years ago). Still sharp, and cutting great threads. Nice ratchet, I'm glad to have it as part of my tool kit.

Heavy duty and excellent for the task
This really helped me out in a jam to manually thread a steam radiator pipe in place after the floor height changed due to correcting a dramatic sagging condition on a remodel. Lots of good cutting oil and slow and steady. The ratchet made it possible in this tight space.

Ratchet Threader
Don't waste your time on buying something cheaper and try to save a couple of bucks. I bought a cheap ratchet and was quickly disappointed when it failed on the first attempt to thread a pipe. I purchased this ratchet (and a couple of dies) and my project was quickly completed without any frustration.

You Get What You Pay For
It's Ridgid! Actually this was a replacement of my 15yr old one who found a new home/resold with/by some miscreant. This smaller model works great for in place work in wall cavities where clearance space is a premium. It limits you to a max of 1" Dia. die head though. No problem with most residential work.

Best available pipe threader
I finally gave up on cheap pipe threaders and went for the brand name. I should never have wasted money on a Princess Auto unit. Expensive but the difference is evident.
