A Real Lifesaver
Buy this. really. I am an archaeologist, and work outdoors in extreme heat, in places with unreliable (or non-existent) electricity. Worse, due to a combination of genetic predisposition and past heat injuries, I have really poor heat tolerance. So, this TeckKewl is not just about comfort - it's literally about life-and-death. The phase-change vest inserts only need to get down to 55 degrees F - and you can get than done in a solar-powered cooler. On those most important measures, it scores a full five stars. With one exception: I'm a woman. This vest does not, er, accommodate my, er, physiology. To get its cooling power next to my skin, or to keep it from riding up over my shoulders, I have to leave the shoulder straps undone, squash flat, and improvise. Even then, I look (and feel) like I'm wearing a flak vest, not cooling gear. I've taken to removing inserts from the vest itself and instead inserting them into - er - other articles of (under)clothing. So when TechKewl designs a Phase Change Cooling Bustier, I'll be first in line. NOTE: this would be FABULOUS for disaster relief; low-income elderly, and other situations where people cannot (or cannot afford to) run A/C during extreme weather, but can power a mini-fridge for a few hours a day.

It won't perform miracles, but it does the job and it's well worth every penny
I currently work at a hospital, in the decontamination area, as a Sterile Processing Technician. The temperature and the relative humidity in this environment is highly regulated. It's also under negative air pressure, taking the hot summer are directly from the outside. The specified air temperature is 65 degrees, and the relative humidity is 60 percent. Personal protective equipment must be worn, from head to toe - full protection. Regardless of what workstation you are assigned in that area, you are all but guaranteed to be in a full body sweat within 30 minutes of your 8-hour shift. If you are assigned to the hand or machine washing area, you will additionally be submerging medical instruments in water that is at a minimum 100-120 degrees. Furthermore, the individual instruments and instrument trays can be quite heavy and you are required to repetitively lift them. As you can see, this is a highly physically demanding position with environmental conditions that exacerbate these demands. Additionally, you may experience some physical discomfort due to the need to focus highly on attention to detail and ensuring that you are cleaning in a safe, sanitary manner. Having said all that, I still love the job because I'm contributing to helping keep individuals and families safe. I knew when I joined this department that the decontamination area would be a component of this position. I don't do well with heat nor humidity. Personally, I prefer that it be below 80 degrees outside and that the relative humidity is low. So, I knew that I would need a vest that was highly effective for this kind of environment and work. So, is the vest comfortable and is it lightweight? It's very comfortable for me and it's pretty lightweight, even with the cooling packs and inserted and frozen. So, how well does this vest perform? I couldn't wait to get this vest, I've only been using it for a week but for the first 2-3 hours, closer to 3 hours, the difference is like night and day. The KewlTech made it so that for the first time since I've been working in the decontamination area that I was not in a full sweat. In fact, only after the third hour of using the vest in the decontamination area did I start to notice the effectiveness of the cooling packs losing their cooling ability. You'll need to recharge the ice pack inserts at this point, if you are needing the same level of cooling performance. The medium/large was a little too loose on me, and I would recommend that you have the vest tight because it will cool a lot more effectively that way. I found a solution though, after tightening the velcro straps tight as possible and finding it wasn't tight enough, I found that if I pull the straps as tight as possible and then tie them around one another in the middle, but it provided a pretty tight fit. See the two pictures I've included. I would recommend buying a second pack of the TechKewl ice pack inserts, or simply buying a second TechKewl vest. As for all the reviews I'm going to give this vest anything below a five star rating - please kindly disregard. I'm assume these people mean well, but, they are grossly misinformed. Does this vest add weight? Yes, of course, find me one that doesn't - it's a natural component of a cooling vest. Is it bulky? Yes, there is some bulk to it as it is a cooling vest. Even I found it interesting to tie my shoelaces, , because I couldn't been down quite as far, but if you sit on a bench or use a chair then it's not a problem. Any reviewer giving less than a five star rating should work just one shift in the decontamination area, at the Sterile Processing department at their local hospital. Go ahead and work 8 hours shift without this best, and then with it, then tell me what you think of it. As the headline of my review says, it won't for miracles, but IMHO it does a great job.

Set your expectations.
Update: Changed from a 4 to a 5 star review. I finally got to try it in work conditions. It absolutely made a difference. Again, I wasn't cool, but I wasn't brutally hot. Nothing short of a NASA space suit is going to give you a climate controlled feeling when you're in the heat. I tried this in the perfect environment - Low Humidity/Hot-as-the-sun Phoenix AZ. I have to go into attics sometimes, but haven't had a chance to try it there yet. However, I used it a few times on my 3 mile walk/hike in 113 degrees heat. It didn't keep my cool, but it did keep me from being too hot. I'm usually drenched at the end of the walk (even with low humidity). When I used this vest, that wasn't the case. I DID sweat, but not nearly as much. I'm not speed-walking, so we're talking about an hour or so walking in the sun. When I get home, the inserts are still in a solid state (frozen). When they're liquid, it takes less than an hour in the refrigerator to "recharge" (freeze) them. One thing I didn't think about before buying this vest is what it would look like. There are very few people walking the trails near my house in the heat, but the couple of people I did see had just the slightest hint of concern/bewilderment/suspicion (I don't know how to describe it) when we passed each other. I'm pretty sure it's because the vest is bulky and looks a lot like a bullet-proof vest. It might say "TechKewl" in the pictures, but the logo on the one I got read "TechNiche". I did a little research and found they both have separate sites. However, Techniche indicates it uses TechKewl technology. The vest itself seems to be well made. Sizing: I'm 5'10, 210 lbs and wear a size 44-45 jacket. Just for reference, technically that would be considered almost obese if using a some matrix on the internet. However, I work out almost daily and, although I could probably lose 10 lbs, most of the extra weight is muscle. I bought a M/L and it fits GREAT. In fact, I had to tighten the Velcro a little bit to snug it up. I found one of the other kind of vests (the evaporation kind) on Amazon at a great price (the description read "used", but I doubt it was). I just got it today, and will probably try that out this afternoon. The reviews were surprising good, but I doubt it'll work better than having your torso surrounded by ice. We'll see. This TechKewl/TechNiche vest cost around $190. After searching Amazon for a while, I found one at $119. There are also other vendors I found in a Google search that sell them for around the $120 range. Even if TechNiche isn't TechKewl, I don't know how this vest could possible be different than a TechKewl. From what I could find, the cooling liquid is the same, and the layout is well thought-out. That being said, I don't think I'd pay $190 when searching around got one for $119. And if I couldn't find one lower than $190, I'd try the evaporation one first. They cost under $40, but if you can find a used one, they're $23. (update: the $23 vest is nowhere near as effective as this vest)

Not comfortable when sitting!!!
The coolant packs are cylindrical in shape and "freeze" solid at refrigerator temperatures. These are extremely hard and lumpy, making the vest very uncomfortable if used when driving or (in my case) flying a small airplane in the heat. This was the primary reason I bought the vest, to keep me cool when doing flight instruction in small planes at low altitudes on hot summer days. Flat coolant packs would be a much smarter design.....
