SERVICE AND WARRANTY SHOULD BE BETTER
I used it for a couple of years with no problem but a few months after the two-year window picked it up and it would not work at all. I tried to call the company with no luck getting through. It looks like the warranty is one year and service via the Amazon site says two years. I watched videos on how to repair and the opened it up and tinkered with it. Although I found nothing specific wrong it worked after I opened it up. The switch may have been disconnecting but nothing specific. It will likely be relatively problem free for most people for a long time, but the short warranty and service may make it difficult to deal with the units that fail and could be easily repaired.

Not the Weller I grew up with
CON: Switch poor feel with non definite steps nor stops between power levels CON: Switch power level is backwards and hard to hold at high power level (see above) CON: Illumination is not LED as advertised (and expected) and sockets are loose and dangling. PRO: Worked otherwise as expected for my medium and high temp needs. Thoughts: Not the Weller quality I grew up with. Indeed I can't find any competition that may have driven their thought process to cheapen the unit. Application: I used this to solder and re-solder Spektrum IC3 and IC5 connectors.

Works great for heavy gauge wire.
Bought this to solder 10 gauge wires. I must say I am impressed how fast and how hot it gets. It worked great and did the job I needed without overheating the wires and ruining the insulation. Would definitely buy again.

Lights didn't work out of the box. But easily fixed and it heats fast.
Wanted some more oomph over my 140/100 watt gun and this kit was a great price. It is heavier than the old gun and still has that pain in the butt two position switch which can really tire your hand out trying to maintain the higher wattage. I wish Weller would modernize the switch on these, but having the smaller gun for 20 years I knew what I was in for. One star knocked off for me having to open it up and resolder the wire to the lights.

This is a high wattage gun.
This is a high wattage gun. I had a lighter duty gun that was very well balanced and worked for many years. This one appears to be higher wattage. Old school transformer in the top of the head makes using this beast a bit more awkward vs. the older svelte cousin. I'm going to keep this one for the occasional big heat sync soldering or large gauge wire. The construction is very basic with small incandescent bulbs barely pointing in the right direction and shaking loosely in the housing. I took it apart to make sure it wasn't a problem with the assembly and found nope, it's just not the quality I remember from Weller. Fortunately the rubbery textures found on so many devices is absent from the ABS housing on this one, so I have little fear of storing it away with out fear of it deteriorating. Can't have it all but it works where it counts.

The soldering gun of my youth
This Weller soldering gun is essentially the same piece of equipment that I purchased and used when I was a kid (and I'm 72 years old now.) Recently, my old one was having a hard time heating up, so I had to (finally) buy a new one. This one works like my old one did years ago but I find changing the soldering heads more difficult than using the wing nuts on my older unit, and I see little, if and difference between low and high settings. But it works and did the job I needed to do. I don't particularly like the case it comes in. The gun does not fit easily into it.
