Great security cam for a great price - seriously
This Arlo Essential cam gets the job done, period. It's $85 and you get a high quality, well made, excellent camera for your home camera needs. The picture quality is good, the audio quality is good, and the full scope of vision is pretty impressive, you can see a good wide view depending on how you angle this camera. It really is well made, it's not dinky and not cheap in your hand. There are plenty of people here who've mentioned the lack of installation instructions, and yes that is a point that would help SOME people, as far as what size drill bit to use, what size anchors, etc. They provide you with 3 pairs of screws and anchors, it's up to you to figure out how to install it exactly to your needs. Now let me say this, if you can't figure out how to hang up a little camera like this, then just hire your nephew or a handyman to do it, because it's really not hard. People complaining about how hard it is to install are probably the same people who could put on a t-shirt backwards, it's fairly easy if you have basic skills with a drill or screwdriver. Just figure out if where you are hanging it has a stud in it or drywall/board. If it has a stud, pre-drill holes and just use your drill to drive the screws into the holes. If you have drywall/board, pre-drill holes, tap in your anchors, and screw the screws in. That's it, easy peesy. When in doubt, YOUTUBE. The other people I have to address are the whiners complaining about "THE SUBSCRIPTION!" Yeah, this has a subscription service that requires it to give you the features you would demand out of a good security camera. The subscription to Arlo Secure gives you video storage and all the other basic bells and whistles you would want. When you purchase this camera they give you 3 free months, after 3 months you have the option to pay either $4.99 per month for service for ONE camera, or $12.99 for unlimited cameras. Seriously, the people on here who are whining about having to pay a measly 5 bucks per month for security camera assistance need to just grow up, it's $5 dollars, seriously kids in grade school could come up with 5 bucks. If you want service on say 4 cameras on your property, you pay $13 per month, that is not a lot of money, no more than your average subscription service to watch lame tv shows on or one greasy meal at a burger joint. Yes, the old Arlo's didn't charge a monthly subscription service, and well guess what? times change, companies get greedy, and life goes on. Grow up and roll with it. If you want a good camera with a good subscription service then this is a great choice and it won't break the bank. Good camera, good service, good choice, go forth and enjoy it.

Frustrating to Use, Lied and Misled about features
I originally bought this for my garage/backyard gate. This part of my house has no access to it unless you literally open up the garage, so having a camera allowed me to see what was there prior to having to actually open up the garage. Initially it was kind of a chore to setup. Their app and account is incredibly frustrating to use, with little recourse to troubleshoot. If your camera does not want to boot into "discovery" mode, too bad. If your camera is not found on your WiFi network, too bad. The actual camera part of it is really good actually. After finally getting it setup, the picture was great, night vision was not perfect, but good enough to see use, my garage bumps up against a minor street so the street lamps lighted up the street well enough, but I had another in my courtyard, and the night vision allowed me to see movement and tell whether something was human or not, but not quite enough to identify features. When I purchased this, it was stated that online and cloud recording was not included, but they did not say that that was the only recordings that were offered, as there is NO ability to do local recording AT ALL. Initially, it stated that both the special motion ability, (the camera ability to recognize people vs cars vs animal etc.), and cloud recording would not be available after their free trial, which I was fine with, as the aforementioned reasoning behind buying this was mainly to see who or what was at my garage before having to open it, but it was quite frankly felt like the rug was pulled out from under me. To add more annoyances to it, I tried to add my parents to the account as they have a small "guest house/room" and stay over quite often, however once I added them to the account arlo would continuously have them do the same thing over again. They would receive an email inviting them to be added, they would fill in information to be added, asked to create an account, and then be told they cannot add this account to another account, and rinse and repeat. Again just frustrating. Finally the straw that broke the camels back: I upgraded my internet, and received a new router, which meant I had to update and reset up all my internet devices, including the cameras. This turned into a several hour debacle. I followed their instructions, it said it connected but even after waiting 15 plus minutes I cannot "connect" to my devices. I even reset both cameras and tried to add them back in. I changed my WiFi information to give it fresh, new information just in case using the same information was causing a problem. At no point in time could I get it working properly. The cherry on top is that when I went to their website and tried to sign in, I used the same password I use on the app, but it would not let me in. I had to get in via a secondary method, which worked, but I could not find a way to reset my password, they only offered a change of password which required me to know my current one, which was not working! I had to log out, to reset my password!!! I have never seen that before, but the best part is that when I received the change password link, and I filled it out, I used the same password I had been using and it said "Cannot use the password you have used previously", I have never changed my password for Arlo, so for some reason I was using the right password but Arlo account would not let me in. TLDR: Camera is awesome, a little tedious to setup, but their app is awful, their account management is horrendous, and essentially without any of their subscriptions, you will not have any features. Also cannot use the cameras without their App.

Mix of good and bad - know what you are getting
Picture quality is very good and the camera is easy to set up (I connected via an existing base station VMB4000 series using the Arlo app). With the 3 month trial subscription, the functionality is everything I've come to expect from Arlo based on my previous experiences with the Pro2 camera. Battery life is extremely dependent on what you are using the camera for. If you are monitoring a high traffic area, you won't get a month out of it - even if you set it for optimized power management. Using it to monitor a more limited area without high traffic (I've been using it to monitor my garage entry) 3 or 4 months seems reasonable. The only way you'll get 6 months is if you point it at a wall so that it never triggers. As mentioned, functionality is great - as long as you have a subscription. Once you don't the limitations become overwhelming. I had expected that since I was paired to an existing base station with USB storage attached that I'd be able to review recordings using the app the same way as I do for my other Arlo camera (Pro2). Turns out, that compatibility isn't there. If you want to see the recordings, you need to eject the USB from the base and view the recordings on a computer (not the app). Seems like a real pain (it is) and either a very poor design choice for compatibility, or a blatant attempt to drive people to continue with a paid subscription once the trial expires. There are base station models that will still let you view Arlo Essential recordings on the app from local storage, but it's not worth it to me to upgrade a base station that works just fine for my existing camera.

Buyer Beware - Plan Required
We’ve had a couple of Arlo Pro 2 cameras for a couple of years and were pretty happy with them. We could have 2 weeks of cloud recordings for free. No paid plan required. We wanted to add 2 more cameras to our system. I couldn’t find the Arlo Pro 2 cameras, but these looked similar, and because they are newer it didn’t surprise me that they can record at 4K. 1080 was adequate with the Arlo Pro 2 so 4K would be even better I thought. When I first setup the cameras and added them to our 2 existing cameras, there was a free trial subscription that gave 30 days of cloud recordings. I didn’t see us ever needing 30 days as 2 weeks had been fine before. I didn’t say no to the free trial, it just happened when I set things up. Unfortunately it would appear that these cameras offer no recording once your free trial has come to an end. If you want to keep using them with cloud recording, you have to pay a monthly fee. This has become apparent as our free trial has ended and we suddenly can’t see any videos from these two cameras in the cloud while our other 2 arlo cameras are still recording and storing for free in the cloud. Because of our previous experience with our Arlo cameras this was not clear to me. I’m disappointed that these do not function under the same terms as our Pro 2 cameras. I do not wish to pay a monthly fee for cloud storage and now these latest two cameras are pretty useless to me. Additionally, the spotlight feature means their battery life is not nearly as good as our Arlo Pro 2 cameras that are a couple of years old.

Garbage. Battery, smart alerts don't work. Waste of money
This is horrible.. motion detection is extremely sensitive. Smart alerts don't work. You configure it to not include animals or vehicles and it still catches everything. Battery, 6 months? Ugh . Didn't even last a full month. Don't buy it. It's horrible. Update: i specifically asked before i bought this that if i added it to a base station if it would continue to record after the subscription. Well Arlo is really sneaky.. it does record.. but only on SD CARD. You can't retrieve the recordings from the app. Really I'm not happy with any of the Arlo cameras. Over priced and very little functionality options.

Lack of battery life.
Have found after 2 months that the battery will only stay charged for approximately 3 weeks unless it is disarmed, but what’s the point of having up and disarmed? Heard so many good things about Arlo cameras and so disappointed. When it is armed it works fine although it reports and records because of a reported motion but nothing can be seen on the play back, even when the sensitivity is turned down. Dialed back as many settings as possible to conserve battery life, but if it’s armed it is chewing through battery power, disappointing for sure and could not recommend this camera.

STOP saying "ONE YEAR BATTERY LIFE"
If the camera records absolutely NOTHING, no activity at all, maybe it'll last a year. But, c'mon people, a moderately busy yard drains the battery within weeks, not months. Good camera, software, and features otherwise.
