Simple, fun way to spark creativity

Cute, BUT just buy felt and cut your own for pennies!!
It’s a cute kit. However, if you’re a pro artist or really crafty person you are likely familiar with the traditional zig-zag and/or heart cut strips method of diy felt succulents. And that’s really all this is. It doesn’t break the mold in any way. You’re essentially just paying a extremely inflated cost to have the felt strips come pre cut. Because trust me, the rubber bands and garden are both a useless joke. You could simply get felt for 28 cents a sheet at Walmart. And each sheet will make 4+ succulents. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just google “diy felt succulents” 10 minutes on YouTube and you’ll be a pro! lol Tips: 1.) Roll your succulent, manipulating leaves as you go if you see them starting to completely overlap eachother (but remember, real succulent leaves overlap partially in some areas. Perfection isn’t what you’re looking for) 2.) Manipulate the base of succulent. Don’t be afraid to squish it around. Squeeze it, or pull the very end piece of the roll back and re tighten or loosen, etc to “open up” and spread the leaves above it. 3.) once it is how you want, glue the very end down with a low temp hot glue gun. You only have to glue it in that one spot for it to hold together. 4.) Break the chalk in half and use it at the split or “grind” the chalk down considerably on concrete or something before use. New chalk SUCKS. It’s pressed so tight during production that there’s virtually no pigment payoff until you break past the pressed outer layer. You could also use Pastels if you have them handy. I used the chalk provided but in hindsight should have used pastels. I didn’t like the red this kit provided. Anyway, I needed them for my succulent Moon wreath project. With everything happening in the world, the craft stores haven’t been open and as a result Walmart’s craft section is picked clean to the bare bones by all the artists trying to get hands on our supplies. So I just ordered this and glued them on the wreath instead. It worked. I paid waaaaaaayyy too much for it. But I do still have a gazillion strips still left over (mostly only weird hot pinks and teals left though) Hopefully someone commissions something with those colors of succulents soon. lol If not I’ll figure it out.

Fun felt project
Fun to do but you can't follow the instructions and have your succulants look like the picture. If you roll per the instruction you'll have a lopsided flower. The rubber bands look like the ones from the bracelet loom . They held the plants together long enough to hot glue them. The base is cardboard and the "glue" they give you won't hold the pieces in place. Hot glue works. I hot glued some ribbon I got from the craft store to finsh this project. The double sided tape they give you to hold the suculants to the base will hold them a short time. I used hot glue to place them all. It does break the rubber band. Caulk is stronger color if you dab it in water

Loved making this craft, and the result!
I really enjoyed this craft! I’m happy I bought and completed it before reading the reviews (a friend recommended it). While I can understand some of the concerns, I found them easy to overcome, and even part of the fun of doing this craft. It took me about two hours total, and I even was thinking about how easy and fun this craft would be to do with kids. I ended up with a couple extra flowers, so I put them in some leftover pots I had, and I am really happy with how they all turned out. I’m considering getting this again, and not putting any in the box, but instead making little gifts with each flower in its own mini container. To address some of the concerns from other reviews: Folding the Box: I agree these instructions are not the clearest, but I read them through twice, and as other pictures have shown, it is doable. Just don’t remove the second side of the adhesive till you are sure you have the fold pattern down. The cardboard is really durable and you can try it out till you get it right. I didn’t have any problem peeling the adhesive strips; I do have strong nails, but really it was no different from anything else you have to peel up in normal crafts. Chalking the Plants: After doing a couple plants Cut then Roll then Chalk, I found out it is much easier to Chalk the felt before rolling it. This is the only place I deviated from the instructions. Some of the felt/chalk combinations did cause the felt to fray, or the chalk to not stick easily, but I used my fingers to rub the chalk in so that it really blends. I found the coloring of the chalk to be one of the more fun parts of the project, and overall, I think it made it look better! Rolling: The petals didn’t line up perfectly while first rolling, and some definitely overlapped, but after rubber banding (and not a single rubber band broke for me) it was really easy to adjust them to be in a pretty layout. A nice loose roll instead of a tight roll is better. Part of what made it fun was looking at each one, then adjusting and pulling the petals till each plant was perfect.

If you're crafty, these are great.
As many of the other reviewers mention, this kit does not produce a great product right out of the box with the instructions given. If you're hand with a hot glue gun, have some patience and enjoy being creative - then it's 4.5 stars. If you're not so patient, want it to be simple, but still look good - then it's probably 2.5-3 stars. I found the colors to match the picture fairly well but the spacing of the petals leaves a lot to be desired. You'll need to cut each strand several times and glue them at different intervals to get the right look. The rubber bands are fairly worthless in that they don't hold the flowers tight enough and when you start adjusting the petals, the middle falls out and the whole thing unravels. Skip the heartache and just use glue. The chalk accents are so-so. I do agree that they look nice but it's very fussy and the felt starts to "fuzz" up when you rub the chalk against it (and believe me, it's a hard rub to get the color to show up). While I ended up going for it, if I were to do it again I might consider skipping the chalk. Ultimately I used these for cake decorations (use the rubber bands to put saran wrap on the bottom so the frosting doesn't get everywhere). The decorations were a big hit and overall I was very pleased, hence the 4 stars.

Very pretty and easy to make
I have no green thumb and love this idea. The box is the only tricky one to make. The double-sided tape didn't hold too well, so I used a glue gun instead and it worked perfectly. The succulents are very easy to make. I ended up buying more of the other mini craft sets for my preschool students for Mother's Day craft.

Cool and easy!
This exceeded my expectations. Lots of pieces to create a lot of succulents, and easy enough that the kids didn't get frustrated and quit. They look very cute as a decoration! We're buying more to make some for the grandparents.

Cute and easy
Easy and cute. Completed by my 14 year old. Will be gluing onto different tray as included tray is flimsy and plain.

Confusing but has potential
The directions are very poorly written and the pictures in the instruction book do not match the materials given. For example, the felt strips are very widely spaced in real life. In the book, they're more compact. This spacing makes it difficult to line up your rolling so that your petals are staggered. Also, they'll tell you to cut 8 petals, but show 9 petals being cut in the book. The pastels aren't that great. The display box is a pain to put together and isn't really that great. I decided to do my own thing. Some of the felt is good quality, some of it us very fuzzy, and some is very thin. The elastics for holding the rolled succulent are very weak and look just like Rainbow Loom elastics. They break so easily if you're trying to arrange your succulent after it's rolled. All in all, I would recommend this kit for the cut out felt, if nothing else. But be prepared to get crafty because this is a tricky kit.

Adorable easy craft kit
Very cute kit that came exactly as it was advertised. Nice and easy craft to do! I started by following the instructions but eventually got more creative and made my own flower designs. Turned out great!
