Works good and pretty fast
This is a must have if you want to put a close to sharp edge on a knife using the aligner kit that this works with. It will put an edge on a knife suitable for all but the pickiest, the professional, or the fanatical. Update 11-5-10 I may have found a significant flaw in using diamond stones to sharpen knives and tools. I am not an expert at this, and I have not seen this mentioned anywhere else, so take it with a grain of salt. The edge of the knives that I have been sharpening, while sharp, do not hold that sharp edge very long. First, no matter how well you sharpen an edge, it is not perfect. The edge has little microscopic teeth on it. Similar to a saw. These `teeth' on a knife are not uniform in size, shape, and spacing, as on a saw. Nor are they rigid as on a saw. On a knife, when you cut something, these weak little teeth bend this way or that way, and the knife begins to feel dull. My theory: Those little bits of diamond grit on a diamond stone are, as you know, very, very hard. They cut very fast. They also cut very deep. They make deeper little grooves, on the beveled edge, than any other type of sharpening stone. These deeper grooves make larger teeth on the edge of the knife. A larger tooth is inherently weaker, and will bend more easily. Also, without going into great detail, the deeper grooves cause each little tooth to have less physical support, making them weaker still. They will bend even more easily. No matter what you use to sharpen an edge, those little teeth are created. They are always present. It appears to me that a diamond grit stone causes weaker teeth that bend more easily. The result is that the edge does not stay sharp as long as when other sharpening materials are used. More comment: Because diamond stones sharpen so fast and so easily, I still like them, and will still use them. I may try to find some other sharpening stone to use as a final sharpening step, to put a more `finished' edge on a knife.

The stone is fine - the four stars is because it is advertised ...
The stone is fine - the four stars is because it is advertised in large bold print as being four inches in length. It is not. If you look down further in the specifications fine print, you will see that it is actually 4.3 inches (which was 4 3/8 inches on my tape measure). If you are buying this for a KME knife sharpener (as you will be led to believe it will fit), it is too long and will not fit. But, if you have a grinder with a metal cutting wheel like I did, rather than return the item, you can cut about 3/16 inch from each end (I did this rather than cutting 3/8 inch from one end because it looked to me like the mesh fasteners would be eliminated on that one end if I trimmed in this manner - by trimming to the fasteners on both ends, they are left intact). It took me about ten minutes to trim and soften all remaining edges, and it now fits the KME knife sharpener fine. Just an FYI - cut it a little long (about 4 1/16 inches) just to ensure the KME holder will clamp it down well. And just a little more information if you are looking at this for a KME knife sharpener, the thickness and width are perfect. It's just the length that will disappoint. Happy sharpening!!

Works as expected
Works great as a final stone before stropping

Extra-Extra not fine
I would give this a one start rating but most people do not read those. I have a Spyderco sharpening set but I wanted something with a larger flat surface for small chisels. The extra-extra fine DMT is supposed to be as smooth as my extra-fine Spyderco. The Spyderco makes a mirror polish on the chisels. When I ran the chisel across the DMT the surface completely scuffed up.

Quality Product
Having used this sharpening tool for many years I have not found anything to complain about. This is a quality product from DMT. I use it to get a keen edge on my wood carving knives and to touch up a chisel or two. Two knives that I use when camping , both with heavy blades and with a unique curvature to the blade, this narrow tool makes it a breeze to touch up the edge when needed. When used properly , this tool will last for many years. I would recommend to friends and will purchase again, when needed.

DMT Confirms it is 8000 Mesh
This is a good stone for putting a polish on your blade's cutting edge. This is the final step in sharpening a blade that you want to put a razor's edge on. This stone, by itself, won't do much on a dull blade. You must use coarser stones first. I purchased this in addition to the DMT Deluxe Aligner. I also purchased an extra coarse stone, so I have a total of five stones to sharpen with. (This stone is probably the least important of the stones.) There is a discrepancy on the packaging with regards to the grit of this stone. The packaging says this is a 2200 mesh stone. This is inconsistent with DMT's literature and web site which state that white is 2200 mesh, and tan is 8000 mesh. So I emailed DMT. Here is what they said: "The web sites are correct. The tan is 8000 mesh. On the packaging the color was changed from white (ceramic) to tan, but the mesh was not changed by oversight. Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Thank you for choosing DMT products. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. Have a great day! A superior finish on knife's edge!
This extra extra fine diamond stone hones an edge to a polished finish quickly and easily. Great quality and value!

Excellent product.
I use this product for putting a final edge before stropping onto my kitchen knives. Believe me they are not razor sharp. As DMT advise the diamond stone takes a short while to bed in but once it does, it works just as it should. Very pleased!

Very Good
Well made & sharpens my knives like razors. Only problem is would like to purchase one that was big enough to fit a sharpening stone block as this one being hand held does not give you complete control with the angles.
