Excellent Design except...

Great design, good quality jar, exactly as described & a stupendous value! Great for beginners yet versatile enough for those a bit more advanced. This is an excellent product except for ONE thing! The nifty gas release is very hard to clean &/or sterilize. It is plastic & a thin plastic that cracks easily. With gentle use this will last many years however & the lid + vent is relpacable...which is exactly what I don't like. I'd rather have something sturdier & not plastic. The design is awesome at keeping insects out. I live where there is ALWAYS a problem species on rotating years, lots of dust, dirt, animals, etc & I haven't had a single contaminated batch in over 6 months! Tiny white flies even get trapped yet CANNOT get in! I've never had an overflow issue with vigorous fermentation either, which has caused some HUGE messes! I say 4.8* to the invention!

Works, but quality issues

I use these for fermenting sourdough. I have tried many different ways of fermenting sourdough, and they all made a mess or just didn't work. I found these fermentation jars with airlock and decided to give them a try. I bought two for making a white and rye sourdough at the same time. I took my starter out of the fridge last night and put it in the fermentation jars, added warm water and the relevant flour for each jar and set up the airlock. I woke up this morning and they were alive. The fermentation process is really active in these jars and the airlock maintains the perfect atmosphere for the sourdough fermentation. We make about eight loaves of bread at a time and need lots of sourdough. The 1 gallon capacity allows us to make all our our breads and have enough left over for a new starter the next time we bake. The bad thing is the quality of the airlock and lids. The seller simply drills uneven holes in the plastic lids. They deliver grommets to seal the airlock, but the grommets do not fit correctly. I had to fiddle around to get the grommet to fit to the point that it did seal with the airlock. The grommet still does not fit right, but it works. I think these jars are great for sourdough fermentation, but only get 4 stars for the bad workmanship and terrible design for fitting the sealing grommets.

Pretty good for the price

So the only issue I found with this is the seal on the inside does not fit very snug in the lid. The hole was also not lined up with the hole in the lid so I had to cut it a bit to fit the o-ring. However, for the price it’s pretty good. I made pineapple wine successfully. It’s easy to clean.

No air lock or the lid for the airlock

This product did not come with airlocks or the lids for the airlock. Now I have to drill holes and go buy more airlocks and gaskets.
