It works as advertised, but it ain't great

There seems to be some confusion over this bulb, its specifications, and its intended use. It's important to note that it is a UV bulb, not a black light. It's a narrow-spectrum UV lamp with a peak at 365nm, which is at the upper edge of human detection. So it looks like it's generating very little ambient light, but anything fluorescent will still glow pretty strongly if it's brought in range of the bulb. Its power rating is a little confusing: Both 2 watts and 600 mW are printed on the bulb. I honestly don't know why the latter rating is there; I tested it and found that it was actually consuming 3 watts. It's fair to assume 1 watt is lost in the conversion to DC, leaving 2 watts to drive the LED. All that said, there are some notable drawbacks to this unit. It uses a single UV LED chip, which is both smaller and dimmer than the average single-chip UV flashlight. It's best used in a room with no other sources of light. The chip is mounted flat on a PCB, and it casts light in a relatively narrow cone. If you have the bulb in a lamp, it will fire most of its light towards the ceiling. It's also not dimmable, which is pretty ridiculous given its price and the fact that it uses a standard LED lamp base with plenty of room inside for the necessary circuitry. I think this light is best used to illuminate fluorescent objects nearby, or perhaps as a low-power UV curing lamp. It works great to light up my small collection of vaseline glass trinkets. If you need a black light, though, this isn't it.

Not very bright

The bulbs did put out black light frequencies, but very low power. Would work for highlighting a poster or something, but not enough to fill even a small room. Also, one of the bulb's plastic dome arrived crushed.

My Three Bulb Roundup

So let's review: a blacklight bulb isn't supposed to illuminate the room or provide ambient lighting. The light from an ideal blacklight would actually be invisible, putting out only ultraviolet frequencies the human eye can't see. Certain colors and materials fluoresce under UV light, though, making a blacklight both useful and fun. To compare, I bought 3 bulbs: Light ItUP Blacklight Blue LED UV Light Bulb Sunlite LED UV 2W A19 Blacklight Blue Bulb with E26 Medium Base Sunlite 20 Watt Spiral Energy Saving CFL Light Bulb Medium Base Blacklight Blue Both LED bulbs are the same size as the standard light bulb and only get a bit warm. The CFL bulb from Sunlite is larger than a standard bulb and gets hot to the touch, so it may not be appropriate for a tight fixture. The fluorescent response from each bulb was about the same. They were very different, however, in their amounts of visible light. Sunlite's LED offering was the cleanest, putting out just enough deep blue-ish ambiance to read by. (Reading by the light of a UV bulb is definitely not recommended!) Sunlite's CFL bulb also did well and was just slightly brighter. Light ItUp's bulb was poor in comparison, emitting a lot of light of a strange and unappealing light blue hue. A "blacklight blue" bulb is supposed to filter out the visible frequencies and shine just the UV and this bulb was dramatically worse for that. Overall, for a "party bulb" I'd recommend Sunlite's CFL version. For the purest UV response, go with Sunlite's LED bulb.

Kinda Dim

Well.......I do understand that it's only a 2 watt bulb. It definitely shines like a true 365nm, and uv reactive items do react in a small room, but dimly. To be honest it could definitely use at least 1 or 2 more led's (minimum) in that bulb. One led isn't quite enough. In order for uv reactive posters or items to brightly stand out, you would need to buy a two or three of these bulbs or put items near it. Honestly for as low power as this is, this bulb would be a better value if they knocked a few bucks off of it or at least put more led's in it. This isn't worth 12 dollars. Sorry. However......it's not completely useless, there are other ways to use it if you're creative enough.

i love this bulb

i love this bulb...it produces the same light...or visual experience...that made blacklights so fun and interesting in my yourh. it doesn't really put out any light...just causes the uv reactive things glow and everything white suddenly glows a bright white...but not a bright purple which is what most blacklights today seem to do. i have some blacklight posters and uv art that i want to stand out as it ought without having to actually light up the room. these little lights do just that...though they are small and weak and don't cover much ground, they are small enough that i can mount them on little lamp fittings and position them where they are most effective...close enough that the uv is strong when color reacts and far enough away to ensure complete coverage of the area i want. i tried another bulb...i think 7watt...and it was strong enough to cover the whole area i want and do so strongly...but it shone bright enough to cast shadows so it had to go. i use two of these now in this back room, each to a corner of its own so's to reach two walls. and i am getting a couple more for the main room to add emphasis to a couple areas -- even objects already bathed in bright purple blacklight will glow more purely, more beautifully, with the aid of these small bulbs...

Awesome Light

Awesome, have it put outdoors for some light and zero bugs attract to it - bright enough to see the door and keys when unlocking. Would recommend for outdoor light if you do not want a bright light that attracts bugs.

Wish it was stronger so that I could get skin cancer, but it's working pretty well either way I guess. Light will reach across a room, the bulb is alright for the price but the soldering looks cheap, loses a star because the chinese aren't the best craftsmen.

Works but dim

There’s a single small led in the centre of the bulb. It does work and may be a good black light but is very dim (the effect falls off very quickly with distance) compared to cfl versions.

The best thing about this black light is the wavelength: It is just the right wavelength of UV radiation to light up UV-reactive paints without lighting up the rest of the room. Most UV blubs emit too much visible light. This emits barely any. That is why I am giving it 5 stars.
