It’s a part
Hard to get enthused over a replacement part other than the relief of finding it. Boat parts are often frustratingly awkward to install. The smaller the boat, the worse. Boats are typically built as an open hull. All the wiring, parts, plumbing, propulsion are installed and the deckhouse/cabin are are put on top like a kitchen pan cover and adhesived and screwed in place. No thought given to repair access unless you go 40 feet or more with lots of space. Same with this simple sump pump actuator for the boat’s shower sump. Had to find and remove screws under several inches of water in the sump (too messy to totally remove all water and impossible to remove entire sump because lack of access to a holding screw). Flexible barbed hose connections also impossible to get off without cutting them off, creating additional problems of hose length. Just venting from years of boat repairs and nothing to do with the part purchased. That said, this part plus two bilge pumps and the freshwater pump failed within two short northern Great Lakes seasons on a new well-respected boat brand. 100 hours on the boat. Clearly these items are third party products but my experience is familiar to Many boat owners. This switch is only activated when using the shower. We took half a dozen short trips and the shower was used maybe 15 times so it lasted some 2 or three hours. From a well respected manufacturer, but manufactured in some low wage country, of course. We don’t make much these days.

The product works great. The only problem I have is the wire that goes to the battery should be longer. Other switches require you to get some kind of fuse whether that's a traditional inline fuse or something like the Blue Sea Systems fuse block that mounts direct onto your battery. This one requires you to lengthen the wire that connects to your + terminal on your battery. So you either need solder and heat shrink or get yourself a butt splice. In my case, I was able to use the old fuse I cut off from my onboard charger because I extended the wires to reach my trolling motor batteries. In addition, I was able to do so because I bought the expensive charger which had a thick enough wire gauge which the cheap one does not. To complete your project, here are some other tools you might want to look on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Ancor-210212-Electrical-Insulated-Insulation/dp/B000NI3DWG/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1532353251&sr=8-13&keywords=ring+terminal+16+awg+terminal+8 This ring terminal is on the end of the wire that connects to your + terminal on your battery. https://www.amazon.com/Imperial-72092-Connector-Terminal-Package/dp/B001ESWMYE/ref=sr_1_8?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1532353356&sr=1-8&keywords=3+way+splice This is for the other wire which taps into your brown wire on your pump. https://www.amazon.com/WGGE-Professional-crimping-Multi-Tool-Multi-Function/dp/B073YG65N2/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1532353421&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=wire+stripping+tool&psc=1 This is a wire stripping tool that allows you to expose the bare wire and allows you to crimp the splice on. https://www.amazon.com/Gardner-Bender-AMT-124-Environment-Heat-Shrink/dp/B000BVZB8E/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1532353499&sr=8-16&keywords=splice+16+awg This allows you to extend the wire that is too short to reach your battery. This is a splice. https://www.amazon.com/Tinned-Marine-Primary-Wire-Feet/dp/B00DMUM2Z6/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1532353596&sr=8-7&keywords=14+awg+marine+wire This is the wire that you can use to extend to your battery. The other brown wire should be the right length because you're just 3 way splicing into existing wire. If you buy another pump from Johnson SPX, you can also buy the black version of this to tap into your negative. Again, this does not have the black wire but the other ones do.

Good but leaves too much water
Overall I love these electronic bilge switches. This one is very reliable, however, it leaves over 3/4" of water in the bilge even if you remove the bottom mounting bracket. Still better and MUCH more reliable than a mechanical bilge switch.

Coat it with hyolmar blue if you want it to last
I have three of these switches on board because even when brand new they seem to fail after about 3 months in the boat. I would rotate them out as once they dried out, they always seemed to start working again. I finally coated the seams of one of them with a sealant called Hyolmar Blue. The one I sealed up has been working faithfully for 15 months now. Update 2022-04-27, even the hylomar coated switch failed after 16 months in service.

Perfect fit !
This was to replace my factory switch in my transom bilge pump . It kept on running regardless of water level so was faulty . This was a direct replacement and was easy to install . Would buy again if needed .

Failed after 6 months
Switch failed after 6 months of minimal use. Did fail in the "on" position as these are designed to do, but drained the battery on both occasions and hoping it did not burn up the bilge pump. I have not dissected it yet to find the point of failure, but I would find a different option. Not a high quality switch.

Johnson Pumps Of America 36303 Marine 20 Amp Ultima Auto Bilge Control Switch
What a great idea! I "just" put a traditional "Mercury Switch" auto-bilge switch in my boat about 6 months ago. One day, a couple weeks ago, I heard a "whirring sound" inside my garage and found that the "brand new" switch I had installed so little time ago had failed. So, although not too expensive, and bought here on Amazon.com, it is extremely hard to fit into the tight spaces under the 4.3 liter GM V6 engine that powers the Mercuery Alpha-One Outdrive. All of that is in the way and I "assumed" installing the "old" switch would be a lifetime thing. It wasn't. This Johnson switch will go in HARD because of the same reasons mentioned above, so hard for me physically, that I have to hire the work done. I know the wiring is as simple as simple can be...It is just the access into the bilge area, for me especially or for whoever does the work, is what I dread. That & possible Time & MAterial expenses..........Again! Long story short, I would recommend this auto-switch for it's design, at the very least, to its affordability and higher tech advantages...And no moving parts to get clogged in the swith parts either! I would recommend this product to my boating friends everywhere! A A A
