Bed is nice, wish assembly was quicker

I like this bed and it's working out well for me so far. No signs of rust yet, but I will update this review if it starts rusting and falling apart. It feels sturdy once assembled. I appreciate that it comes with a plastic edge guard for the top edge -- the exposed edges are sharp and you can cut yourself easily. It's also a nice touch that they included a weed mat to go underneath the bed. They included some other random extras like a very tiny shovel, but frankly it is so tiny I don't think it's useful for a bed of this size and I tossed it out -- I would prefer if they reduced the price by a couple bucks instead of including the extras. The main reason why I took off a star is because the assembly is kind of annoying. I don't mind having to screw all the pieces together -- that's the only way they can get it small enough to fit into a reasonable size shipping box. Rather, what annoyed me was that every one of the 10 metal pieces has a protective plastic film on the front and back. It was easy enough to get off the straight pieces, but it was an absolute bear to get off the curved pieces (of which there are 6). I think something about the metal stamping process caused the film to bond much stronger to the curved pieces, but I can't be sure -- the only thing I am sure about, is it took a really long time to peel this stuff off. I appreciate they were trying to prevent scratches on the metal, but this is a galvanized bin meant to sit outside and be gardened in -- it's going to get some minor scratches inevitably at some point. One also minor point -- they included the EXACT number of screws and bolts necessary to assemble this. There are something like 40 screw/bolt pairs you need to assemble, so it's pretty easy to accidentally drop a screw and lose it. It would have been nice to include one extra pair.

Not quick to assemble, but looks decent

I got this raised bed to fill in a smaller area in my garden and it fit the bill. When the box arrives, you think it can't possibly fit in something so small, but it's packed very tightly. In addition to the materials to build the bed, it comes with: * A pair of thin knit gloves, good enough for assembling the unit, but not much else. * Some kid-sized gardening tools * A set of garden markers * A piece of plastic tarp to put down on the bottom of the bed - I might use this if I was putting this on a paved surface, but mine is going on the bare ground and I lined the bottom of it with wire to discourage gophers. Assembly took about 30-45 minutes, there are 40 bolts and wing nuts used to put it together and the black edging that goes around the top. I chose to leave the plastic on, but in hindsight, it would have been better to take it off before I assembled it because it was more work afterward and I just took off the plastic on the outside of the curved pieces. Also, I used a few extra tools that were not included to make the assembly easier and more secure. A Phillips-head screwdriver for the connectors, a mallet to seat the edging on the top, and a pair of side cutters to cut the edging to the right length. The straight metal pieces are folded over at the top/bottom edges while the curved pieces are not and this makes it a bit difficult to get the edging to seat at the overlaps. Also, the edging is more malleable when it's warm - so take that into account. Once I got it all together, it was light enough to carry to where I wanted it. I leveled the area and made a shallow trench for the bottom edge to sit in and then filled it with soil. It seems very sturdy and I think it's going to work out well.

Attractive and easy to put together

I love the look of these rustic raised garden beds that resemble watering troughs on a farm, but don't have a vehicle to pick up the real deal from my local Tractor Supply. The idea of shipping a planter in a box that I can assemble at home is truly inspired, and the price point can't be beat. The planter was a cinch to put together, and looks exactly as pictured. I filled it up with garden soil and my baby lettuces and carrots are happily shooting up in my new container garden. This is an excellent choice for those of us who love the aesthetic but don't need an actual trough!

Much assembly required, no real base

I don't know if the description of this product changed after I ordered it, or if I just completely missed the mark, but I thought that this had a solid base or bottom. Instead, it has a fiberglass "cloth" that you can sit in on to help retain the soil and allow excess water to flow through. Because of that, my primary use for the product is no longer an option. While the product description talks about "5 screws," what it doesn't clearly say is that there are five screws required for each panel, and the 4 x 2 kit contains 10 panels. That's a total of 50 screws and wingnuts that need to be fastened, and I challenge anyone to complete that level of assembly in five minutes. However, once the assembly is complete, the metal perimeter of the bed is stable and secure. Rubber trim is provided to cover the top edge of the bed so that you don't get cut by the sharp edges. As I mentioned, this bed has no bottom, so if you locate it on soil you shouldn't have an issue. If you place it on a deck or patio, you have no means to make the bottom waterproof. The pad is basically a piece of weed barrier, which will help to retain the soil somewhat. I don't feel comfortable with filling a 4 x 2 box with soil that will be sitting on my deck for a protracted period of time... it's an invitation for rot. I'd also considered using this for a water garden, but that's not an option either. At present, I'm not sure how I'm going to use it, or even if I'll use it. As long as you are aware that this had no bottom and understand all of the implications and the product fulfils your needs, I think the bed can be a great solution. For my purposes, I would not order it again. I do give the manufacturer a nod with 4 stars as it is a sound, sturdy product based upon the current product description and photos.
