Gosh - dontcha just hate it when Santa pre-empts one of your great gift ideas?
With our oldest grandson's 8th birthday rapidly approaching, I have to say sometimes I think my husband and I get just as much of a kick out of choosing gifts related to his professed future occupations as he does in receiving them! Those occupations have run the gamut from Super Hero to his latest - electrical engineer, and we were so excited when we came across this neat looking kit that would allow he and his dad to work on "over 300 exciting projects" together (305, to be exact!) Well, one recent rainy Sunday we brought breakfast over to our son and daughter-in-law's house so they wouldn't have to traipse over to our place - where the majority of our visiting happens - with the grandkids in the sloshy weather, and afterwards, the boys couldn't wait to show us some of the toys Santa had brought that we hadn't yet had an opportunity to see. GUESS what one of the oldest's was? Yep - this exact same set! We were initially really disappointed since it looked like we'd be returning what had seemed like the perfect gift, but my son assured me that another of these sets would only EXPAND his fun, increasing his ability to build more elaborate projects. After seeing our grandson's excitement and sense of accomplishment while deftly putting together (with a few reminders from Dad) a couple of different contraptions, we knew we'd struck gold with this set. There are two separate instruction manuals included (I'll list the individual projects in the last couple of paragraphs - there are a bunch, so just skip it if you don't need that much nitty gritty.) If you have a budding electrical engineer in your home, we're betting he/she gets as much enjoyment out of this set as our grandson (and his dad!) already have, with many more hours of "bonding" ahead of them! Experiments 1-101: Electric Light & Switch; DC Motor & Switch; Sound Activated Switch; Adjusting Sound Level; Lamp & Fan in Series; Lamp & Fan in Parallel; Light Emitting Diode; One Direction for LED; Conduction Detector; Space War Alarm Combo; Flying Saucer; Decreasing Saucer Lift; Two-Speed Fan; The Fuse; Musical Doorbell; Momentary Alarm; Alarm Circuit; Laser Gun; Space War; Light Switch; Paper Space War; Light Police Siren; four More Loud Sounds projects; Clap Sounds; four More Clap Sounds projects; Voice Light Diode; Voice Control; Motor Space Sounds; Motor Space Light; Space Battle (II); Silent Space Battle; Periodic Sounds; Blinking Double Flashlight; Motor Controlled Sounds; four More Motor Sounds projects; Light-Controlled Flicker; More Sound Effects; This OR That; This AND That; Neither This NOR That; Not This AND That; Reflection Detector; Quieter Reflection Detector; Flashing Laser Light with Sound; Space War Flicker; Spinning Rings; Strobe the House Lights; Race Game; Using Parts as Conductors; Spin Draw; Space War Flicker Motor; five Light-Controlled Sounds projects; Electronic Bombing Game; Quiet Zone Game; Space War Music Combo; Space War Siren; Quiet Water Alarm; Light-Controlled Lamp; Voice-Controlled Lamp; Motor-Controlled Lamp; Light-Controlled LED; Sound-Controlled Time Delay LED; Motor-Controlled Time Delay LED; Space War Flicker LED; Music AND Gate; Flash and Tone; Lamp, Speaker & Fan in Parallel; Pencil Alarm; Pencil Alarm Variants; Fun with the Alarm IC; two Motor Sounds Combo projects; Music Alarm Combo; two Bomb Sound projects; Light-Controlled LED (II); Touch Light; Touch Sound; Wacky Sounds; Wackier Sounds; Really Wacky Sounds; Noisier Water Space War; Light/Water Space War; OR/AND Space War Light; Simple Water Alarm; Simple Salt Water Alarm; Ambulance Water Alarm; Ambulance Contact Alarm. Great STEM gift for any kid who is into tech!
Got this as a Christmas gift for my son and he LOVES it! It's like a much more interactive Lego kit. It might take some adult help to figure out some of the projects and instructions, but once they get the hang of it your child should be able to do most of them on their own. I do wish the pieces were repairable or that you could order replacement parts in case some of them get damaged.

Fun, but ran into a few problems
I bought this toy for xmas for my 8 year old daughter, so that I could teach her a little bit about electricity. I have a fairly strong background in physics and electrical engineering, so I thought it would be a fun xmas gift that we could both enjoy. The overall layout of the kit is very nice. It's very much like a big lego version of a typical bread board that is used to lay out electrical projects. The parts snap together nicely and the kit includes a clear peg board panel which is handy (but not required) for laying out projects. The instruction book includes many different projects that can be created using the pieces in the kit. However, it should be noted that many of the projects are slight variations from one another. For example, one project might be a tone generator, then the next few projects will just be changing capacitors in order to increase or decrease the tone frequency. Nevertheless, this still teaches you about how different items can affect the overall circuit/project. Overall, I think some of the projects are a little beyond younger children. Hooking up a motor or light is fun, but suddenly jumping into a tone generator or full AM radio is a big leap for most people - let alone most kids. Even so, the kit has a lot of value and the projects are doable with some adult help. Following the diagrams can be a little tricky at times - due to how the items must stack on top of each other - but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad. On our particular kit, several of the components were defective and/or broke while being used. I actually ended up having to drag my oscilloscope out of the closet to verify that in fact some of the items had internal shorts (probably from poor wiring). The manual says to contact the company for replacement items (which I have done) and now I'm waiting to see if they take care of the replacement (I'll follow up later with a further update on whether or not they come through). Additionally, one of the small light bulbs broke away from the base, so it's probably not a good idea if kids too young use this kit without some supervision. Due to the couple of defective (and suspected defective) parts, we were unable to get the AM Radio projects to function correctly. However, assuming things work okay, there are several nice Radio projects (complete with volume control and tuning) which look to be pretty fun. There are also a couple of fun components that respond to sound and light and these allow you to change tones based on light (such as moving your hand or dimming the lights in the room). The kit also includes two 3V battery packs (you have to supply the AA batteries of course). This is nice because it allows you to supply power in series or parallel (3V or 6V). There are also a couple of switches. Perhaps one of the most fun items in the kit is the flying fan. My daughter played with that silly thing for about two hours! Basically, it's a small motor and you set a small fan on the shaft. Once it gets up to speed, then you kill the power and the fan takes off like a helicopter. If you power it with 3 volts, it goes up about 3 feet high. If you power it with 6 volts, it really takes off like a rocket. There are also several LED lights. The items in the kit are clearly marked and help ease you into learning how to read a schematic to a certain degree. The construction of everything seems pretty good. Overall, this is a pretty good kit. However, I think it might be more fun for kids if there were a few more simple items to play around with and not as many IC's or transistors. Additionally, some parts sort of take the form of "black boxes"; these parts may be required to produce some of the projects in the kit, but it's a little more difficult for kids to really understand what function they are providing. Even so, I still can recommend the kit. It's a lot of fun and assuming the company stands behind the broken items in our kit, then I think it's worth the money and will provide quite a bit of entertainment (and educational) value to kids. My daughter already seems to grasp some of the basic concepts pretty well, although I have to keep an eye on her so she doesn't accidentally create a direct short with the batteries and burn the house down or something :-) UPDATE: the company did replace the broken/defective parts in our kit at no charge. However, they failed to send one of the correct parts (I don't think they read my e-mail very closely). I didn't bother to contact them again. Overall, a fun toy that I think kids will have a good time with.

Perfect for my 10 year old grandson
This Christmas gift really excited my grandson. He spent full days after Christmas with it. When school restarted after the holidays he rushed home to do more experiments. It has slowed down some but 2 months later he still comes back to it several times a week.

Best Toy Ever
I struggled on what to get my 10 year old son and after doing a lot of research and reading a lot of reviews I purchased this circuit set. At first he was disappointed because it wasn't something he asked for but once he started using it he absolutely loved it! I think he went through all the projects within a couple of days and then started to create his own designs. Not only is this educational, I think the sense of accomplishment he gets boosts his self esteem. I now wish the bigger set was available. From what I read it sounds like you can combine sets to build bigger projects so that may be in our future. I highly recommend this toy!!

Great gift
Sent this to our grandson for his 8th birthday. He is enjoying building things and can do the projects on his own. That tells me pictures and instructions are well written
