AFI A-23 replacement, with some minor adjustments

I needed to replace my Chaparral boat horn to remain compliant, as it stopped working mid-season last year. I ordered the Sea Dog V2 based on average responses, and assuming it would fit the space currently occupied by the factory A23 from AFI. The plastic housing on this product appears to provide a more directed sound box than the open hull cavity currently used, but did require some minor modifications to be installed. The basic steps are: 1. Using a plastic car trim tool, or flat head screwdriver wrapped in a paper towel, pry off the faceplate of the existing horn assembly. 2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the 2 mounting screws securing the A-23 horn assembly (Save these) 3. Being careful not to drop the wires into the hull opening, remove the horn and ground wires 4. Using a Dremel rotary tool, grind the opening slightly to accept the larger plastic enclose of the Sea Dog V2 5. Install the wires to the new Sea Dog horn, fit the horn and ground wires on the same left or right posts as before (Polarity is not important so the wires can be installed on either leg) 6. Slide the new assembly in the opening, and secure with the 2 factory screws (The ones you saved from #2) 7. Pop the new cover onto the horn assembly, paying attention to the 2 posts on one side and the 1 post on the other. Honk with impunity on the water!

It works.

This was the same as the one on my Chaparral 220 SSI. Used my original cover as it was stainless steel not plastic.

Very nice but provide a template

I like it a lot, works great. But... you provide a miniature diagram of a template with measurements. LAME! Provive a full size template that can be cut out. I had to draw my own template using measurements provided. Do it right or don't do it Sea Dog!

Easy to install where others are inaccessible.

Love this unit. Easy drop in replacement. Last time I had to get my kids to crawl inside the bowels of the boat to install the old horn, and they've grown too much to fit now. This unit drops in nice's from outside the hull. Loved the choice of white or chrome grill.
