--Ann Bieri

You can' go wrong with Shun
If you are familiar with the Shun cutlery products then you won't be disappointed with this knife block. It is made of sectioned pieces of bamboo, so this means you get a strong material with excellent water resistance. Think about this most bamboo grows in very wet environments and the wood does not rot or decay easily. Having said that this knife block will give you years of durability, especially if you care for you Shun products. Also, the knife block has enough slots for a great knife portfolio that provide versatility without excessive slots on knives that you will not use. Great product, highly recommended.

Works perfectly
I had this block on my wish list for over a year until I finally got so annoyed that my current knife block won't hold all my knives that I took a chance and ordered it; I was hesitant that my Wusthof-Trident knives would fit well in this block based upon some of the other reviews. After four months of use, the good news is that that this block, although created for the knives of another manufacturer, works perfectly for my Wusthof knives, including the kitchen shears, which slip snugly into the slot provided; in fact, due to the downward angle of the slots, all of the knives stay solidly in position, even though the knives are more narrow and shorter than the various slots. The largest knife I have is a 9" chef's knife, which is 1 7/8 wide at its widest point, and there are 5 slots which will hold this knife, including some of the shorter slots (counting from the bottom, it fits into the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th row). It looks to me that the longest blade that will fit into the block is 12" of actual storage. I have this block with the narrow side flush against the wall under my cabinets, which are 17" over the counter, and there is plenty of clearance; the block extends far enough out that knife handles are essentially clear of the cabinet in terms of insertion and removal. And, the block is attractive, solid, and very well made. I am very pleased with this and recommend this product without hesitation.

Pricey but good quality
If it were not for the high price of $59.95 I would give this five stars. It is made from bamboo glued together into solid blocks. That makes it denser than maple or oak and it does not absorb water which is a very nice feature for a knife block. This is a very heavy block so it does not tend to slide around on the countertop which is good. The other very good feature is the slots are sideways so you do not need to put your knives sharp edge up in it like you do blocks that have with vertical slots. For those of you with vertical slot knife blocks and do not know how to properly insert your knives, if you put them in with the edge down it will dull the edge over time so you need to store them with the edge facing up. With horizontal slots like this one has it does not matter. In addition to my Shun Reserve knives, this block also accepts other brands of knives such as my Kyocera Kyotop Damascus ceramics and others. One last feature which I like, the photo does not show any markings in the usual place on the front under the slot for kitchen shears. On the one I received is the expected Shun emblem branded into the wood to show off the fact that it is a Shun. You can see photos of blocks with this branded emblem on the Shun website.

Meh. at first, then I have come around to really like this block (from 3 to 5)
I bought this block and some knives back in 2014. It is now October 2020. While it would have been nice to have at least 1 narrow slot for a small utility knife, the block has held up remarkably well and still looks like it did when I bought it. It holds some knives like the Shun vegetable knife and 8: Chef's knife perfectly as well as the hone (However, that's almost a given really). The design is great and I would buy another one should the need arise. I was asked by the manufacturer to change my rating after leaving my first review. And I refused since I felt it deserved the rating I gave it at the time due to being decent, but not quite perfect. And I don't like to be told what to do. haha. Anyway, after using it all these years, the last few times, I remembered this review and thought I should give an update after spending 6 years with the item. I have kept my original review below for those that care to read it as well. Original Review: I bought this block along with a few Shun knives and the hone. The block looks nice and is made well. But the slots are not the greatest sizes. I would like to add a small Shun pairing knife to this block and there are no slots that narrow. Other than that, it's OK.

Perfect for my needs
Perfect for my needs, the slots are long enough for my bread knife and my long roast slicer, also wide enough for my wide chef knifes. Has a nice finish, is heavy, doesn't move around, and feels solid. Highly recommend, worth the money for a nice looking knife block that my knifes fit in.

Works well, like the fact that the blades are stored on the flat to maintain the shape edge.
